awww the cute putty cat, did u tickle his tummy? great pics ian
These could be gorgeous pics, and indeed they are very well composed etc., but they look massively over-sharpened to me because the background is really odd. Have you sharpened them much? I love the foreground subjects. It's just the background is really distracting for me. Feel really bad for saying this. I don't mean to pee on your fire :(
I would echo the bokeh comments - whats up with that? Really distracting :(
That otter pic has huge potential to be a superb shot (and is my fave of the lot so far) but I just cant get on with the bokeh :(
not sure whats going on with me bokeh lately ! lol i will have to check it ! I dont sharpen them much at all to be honest !

The only time I've seen that happen is when I've over-processed. It's such a shame because without that, they're beautiful images. Love the fox ones.
There ya go, totally unedited except for size ! Bokeh is the same in this !
Only real difference is the levels, i need to check where im going wrong with that as it isnt transferring well to the web !

These are over sharpened, this is probably also the reason why you find ISO 400 noisy.
Apart from that they are great images

First and last shots for me but would have to agree about the over-sharpening!
Puzzled a bit cos no matter what i do or dont do the bokeh doesnt change ! even without USM, the background looks exactly the same ! Now going potty flicking from one to the other trying to see a difference ! lol
Is it all of the pics that look over done ?
Maybe time i took a little break ! lol
That original otter shot is a very dull lifeless image Ian. Looking at the EXIF info, you also under-exposed by one stop, and shooting jpeg you haven't got the adjustment latitude you would have with RAW.
Lovely shots Ian, but if that shot is typical, it seems you've over-cooked the processing trying to get some punch into the images? They're looking over-saturated too, (some of those greens are very 'Brazilian rain forest' :D) which in turn will make any noise more noticeable, particularly in the background.
I can't say I find the bokeh objectionable, and it's down to aperture and distance of the subject and background in relation to each other and the camera anyway.
Lovely shots though Ian, so it's worth spending some time processing them. :)
EDIT:
If you're shooting jpegs Ian, check what settings you have in-camera for jpeg sharpening too.
They were all shot RAW. dont think i have shot JPG since i got the camera ! ;) the light was horrific, one minute dull and overcast, next blazing bright sunshine ! so had to knock the exposure or end up with totally blown highlights
Hmmm the saturation, i better check what i did with that, my eyes were hurting last night so probably over cooked it !
Not all of the shots are that dull by the way, as i said light was extremely changeable, chances are i wasnt quick enough changing the exp comp, eg one second it was bright sun, next we were sheltering in a hut cos it was chucking it down ! lol
Hmmm is this any better ? My eyes are burning still, and got rotten headache ! lol

thats better Ian, far more natural. Best to leave images a day before processing sometimes, lets you recover from the day.
Bokeh oddness could be down to the focal length being 400mm, was it with or without IS?
lovely Ian, I like them a lot :)

Vastly improved otter shot
problems aside, these are ace - they all look quite emotional apart from anything else :D
The second one of Mr. Fox is my favourite :)
I see that expression on that last cat on our cat at times! Not a good time to stroke him.
Oh and I just see a red X in post #7

Love the Fox shots Ian good impact and great clarity, I agree about the background being distracting, although it doesn't bother me that much.
Didn't see the first otter shot but that new one looks full of life to me...same prob with the background though....not quite as obvious
Great set, the cat ones my fave just because of the expression. :D
