Hi,
Im buying a lense hood for my Nikon D40 i got at christmas, it will be for the AF-S DX 18-55mm kit lens. I Found one whilst browsing on ebay, im sure it fits? Will i be better buying one from Jessops for a bit more money or will this do the job?

Out of curiosity, what's your reason for wanting a hood? People often put them on very wide-angle lenses where flare is an issue, or expensive lenses as a method of protection, you don't often see them on kit lenses though. I can't really help as to whether it'll work or not, I'm a Canon person myself!
1 more thing, a lot of people will fly off the handle at anyone putting an 'e' on the end of "lens", it's one of those strange little things that some people feel very strongly about! Just warning you, anything for an easy life eh :D

Seriously though, I've bought hoods from them before, and they work fine.
Provided it's the same size as the thread, of course!

Sorry the late reply, went out after creating the thread and only just got back lol.
Im buying one to experiment with regards to stray light entering the shots and from what I have read, you can lose contrast with the unwanted light...?
This is completely factual info I have come across and I know knowone for hands on experience.
I got my first DSLR for xmas so thought I would get one and see what i make of it....that a good enough reason for my to buy one  dont shout at me haha
Thats really nice of you to hunt one out for me
I will give you something for it if you find one or I will feel bad;)

Dont fancy my chancers buying from China lol
Would you guys suggest the flower hood or standard? From what I have read the Flower hood is most effective.
Really appreciate the help people ;)

Haha, you'll find no shouting here! It's a perfectly fine reason, I was just curious that's all! Hope you find one (and very good of members for trying to find one as well)!

You want a standard type, Petal hoods are for lenses where the front element does not rotate with focussing/zooming.

I use a hood most of the time, it acts as a safety barrier for clumbsy me as well.:p

you dont want to use a flower shaped hood on the 18-55 as when it is focusing the end of the lens rotates ans the hood will get in the way and cause you to get dark bits in the image. go to jessops and pick up a universal 52mm rubber hood.

yeah its a good job i found that out before i went and bought one, i managed to find a universal rubber hood on ebay for £3.00 earlier this morning, never used so mint condition.
I like a lens hood because it keeps proddy bits away from the glass. Stops flare as well, which is nice.
