Hey people,

Hopefully your not all getting sick of my questions yet :D

THe strap that came with the camera seems a bit flimsy so I was going to buy a new one that was a bit more substantial. This brought up a problem of sorts though.

What is better a Neck strap or a hand strap thing.

IS it possible to get both on the camera at once ?

What does everyone use?

I really can't stand anything hanging from my neck. So I use a hand strap, also not as conspicuous as having it hanging in front

On mine I have both a hand grip and a neck strap fitted, I do tend to use the hand strap more.

BEen looking at hand straps on ebay.

There is the official sony one for 30 odd quid but other ones for about 5 quid.

Looking on the hand straps it would seem that you can install the quick release pad from a tripod on it. is that possible? WIll having the hand strap on affect the stability using the tripod

Just ordered a handstrap on ebay for £3.30 (free delivery). If it's no good I'll have not lost much.

No good as in the sense the strap breaks?

I doubt that, especially as with a hand strap, the hand would be holding onto the camera. I was referring to more of a comfort thing.

If the hand is holding the camera then what purpose would the strap serve? At some point, the strap must be relied upon to support the weight of the camera.

Personally, I'd be concerned that a cheap strap (made as cheap as possible by using inferior quality materials) would be much more likely to fail.

It's purely a comfort thing for me, a little more wrist support if you will. Can't really think of a way of using the strap without having your hand on the camera.

I use a neck strap and have it around my neck whilst shooting, otherwise it's used to carry the camera over my shoulder. I don't mind having the camera hang off my neck but I wouldn't leave it there all the time... wouldn't do wonders for your back that's for sure :p

How do any of you cope strap-wise when you have a grip fitted and often use it in portrait mode?
I've got a 5D (no grip) and a gripped 40D. Currently have neck strap on the 40D but nothing on the 5D.

I think it depends upon what you need and find easy to use.

In my case it's a simple neck strap (no 'look at me!' branding) which regardless of whether I'm shooting in portrait/landscape mode is wrapped around my hand. That's been my prefered method for years, although I think I can remember it feeling awkward at first. Nowadays it's comfortable enough though.

I've got one of the Ebay handgrips (plus an Op/Tech Pro strap) on my D300/MB-D10 combo, the only down side is that the lug that locates the bracket on the camera base doesn't fit properly with the larger footprint of the grip, so it's perfect, but it does the job and works well even with the 70-200 on the front.

I'm going to treat myself to one the S5 Pro too....as soon as I can save up the £3

I may try one as I find having the 300 + grip with either a 80-200,80-400 or 300 hung on my neck all day very uncomfortable.

Problem I have is that I have the D300 with the 80-200 or 80-400 and the D200 with the 300,both with grips on, when I go shooting shooters shooting. Now I don`t mind the lenses banging against my soft clothing, but I will not accept them banging against each other. So,I have one hung over my neck and the other over my shoulder, which is not the best security wise, plus the one over my shoulder is not accessible fast enough at times.

Wondering how to go about altering things........

Problem with the handgrip is that I sometimes need to both hands to navigate muddy banks and slopes in woodland.

The hand strap grips the back of your hand, so you can hold your camera just by your finger tips and be very safe.
As for the quality of the strap, the nylon webbing that they are made of, would have no trouble holding 50kg. The camera would probably break before the strap.

It wouldn't be the webbing that I'd be worried about, but the attachment points.

Personally, I use the supplied Canon neck strap and usually wrap it twice around my forearm. Using the neck strap means I've got the option of wearing it around my neck or slinging it over my shoulder.

This arrangement works well for me and the only time I find it getting in the way is when shooting low on a tripod.

If you're thinking of getting a hand strap and you have a small camera without a grip (eg 350D), it can be a little uncomfortable and may take you a bit of time to find a nice position. And it is better with a grip. Just my own experience. :)

TP neck strap for me, I'm not sure if I had my 100-400 on the camera and carrying it around on the with the handstrap is going to be comfy. If it gets to heavy on my neck I hold lens and camera cradled in my arm like you would carry a baby but with neckstrap still in place, it fits quite well.

I have ordered the hand strap now so I`m gonna try both and see what is the most comfortable.

Grips are quite expensive at least for the proper sony ones. What do they offer when taking photos

Neckstrap definitely for me, however it's rarely round my neck when I'm carrying the camera. I have it over my shoulder more often for carrying, and over neck for shooting.

Grips offer the ability to take shots in portrait orientation without having to turn your hand over (Something I find quite uncomfortable and it also throws my balance off). They also balance the camera better, especially if you use big lenses and also they take 2 battery packs.

Its a handstrap for me. I bought the Canon hand Strap E1 and this is great, nice amount of padding to make it comfortable, there is the option to also attach the neck strap but i've never opted for that.

Here's how the generic Ebay grip sits on the D300/MB-D10 if it is attached so that it sits straight

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3077/3159359011_daffb376da.jpg

and here's how it sits if fitted at an angle

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3258/3159370217_38b6b0e6ec.jpg

which leaves it attached like so

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3120/3160196398_c0fd3d91c1.jpg

I'm undecided whether to grind the lug off so that it sits flush or not, mind at the price I suppose I should really give it a go...

i've got the hand strap on my d300 but i'd like a neck strap but can't find one that is thick enough or long enough any suggestions welcome :)

ideally reasonably thick all the way through rather than tapering to a thin strap and longer than down to my belly as i prefer to carry just above hip level or even on my hip so i can have my hand on it (if that made any sense)
