View Full Version : Yes another 1, err 365 that is "Still going... sort of"
Decided to have a go at a 365 inspired by the people who completed a 366last year, not sure how far I'll get but my new years resolution was to take more photos to help improve my shots.
Heres my first not technically a good shot more a family snap tbh but I dont see my gran very often these days so thought it would be a nice shot to start with.

Not sure wether to post every shot here or just link back to my flickr 365 set, quite a lot of 365's starting today by the looks of it so don't really want to over run the forum with them :)
Sean
Nice start. Post them here, much prefer that to links. Good luck with the 365!
Thanks fabs appreciate it mate will help with the motivation :)
We'll have to start a support group for eachother!

Cheers cyclone the tree was in the local church yard felt a bit strange hanging round in there late at night so I rushed the shot a bit, it was pitch black other than a few horrible yellow light's on the side of the church building luckely one of them lit the tree.

Todays shot the moon taken at about 4pm, there was a really nice sunset about half an hour before I took this but I couldnt find anywhere to get a nice shot of it with a nice forground interest so settled on the moon instead.

Nice range of shots. I can almost feel the cold!
Left it a bit late tonight but still day 7 to me as I haven't went to bed yet ;)
My first attempt at water drops which was very difficult as all of the taps in my house are to short and not adjustable so I couldn't get a constant flow of drops to focus on. I had to use an old blowerbrush bulb and fill it with water and hand hold it while pressing the shutter on the camera as the battery in my remote died lol after 40 minutes of trying this was my best shot.

May try this again on Sunday when I visit my parents as it will be a lot easier to set up there.

Interesting reflection you got there - keep trying, it's not easy.
I've never even tried it, so kudos to you for giving it a go!
No work today so took the dog out for a couple of hours this morning, took about 80 shots in total and only go a couple that I liked I seem to be getting worse :( . Anway heres one from this morning that I liked.

Not enough time today so it was either something indoors with the lightbox, a self portrait (will probably do one eventually but I don't like being on the lens side of the camera) or out in the garden for another moon shot, decided on the moon shot as the moon looked amazing tonight and the sky was really clear, had a bit of a read on bringing out the colour and this is what I came up with, quite pleased with it even if I do say so myself, Id like to thank jgs001 for the inspiration.

Thanks Fabs I think its the rest of the 365'ers that are keeping me going with this really, not getting many comments other than from you guys.. you know who you are :)
Erm tips use the longest Lens you have, tripod, liveview if available if not mirror lockup (assuming Sony's work similar to Canons where liveview locks the mirror) manual focus (zoom in on liveview if you can I usuallu use the 10x Liveview zoom lts you see the details well enough to see if they are sharp or not), I usually do a few test shots Starting at f5.6 1/150 seem to find f8 or f11 sharpest this was shot at f11 1/60 may take a few shots to find the sweet spot of your lens, HTH.
Oooooohhhhhh, I like that
Thanks Chilli much appreciated mate :)
Cheers Sean. Not got liveview so will have to make do with the viewfinder.
I think we'll all keep going with this if we keep our support group together. ;)

No probs fabs oh forgot to mention to use self timer or a remote ;).
I think your right there mate I'm sure we can make it through this, you never know we might get to the end of the year and have to set up 365'ers anonymous as we can't stop posting

Have a wireless remote so no problem there. I think the longer we keep going, the more interest may be drawn in.
Wooo, go us!
Excellent detail in the moon, not convinced on the colour, the blue seas give it a load of depth, maybe I'd prefer it with less red and green.
What lens was this with?
Thanks cyclone  I might give it another edit with the red and green toned down a little see how that comes out. Shot was taken with my Canon 100-400L.

Yeah me too - I've struggled with ideas since I've been back to work. But it's great to have all the support from you guys :D
Yea bloody work gets in the way of all the fun lol, I find it really hard on work days as I don't get the time to go anywhere, I can't take photos at work (company policy), not enough time at lunch time to get anywhere (30 minutes lunch breaks suck) then I usually come straight home to walk the dog by which time Im too tired to be going to far wouldn,t be to bad if I had transport but relying on buses etc. it isn't going to happen especially not in this weather, So I'm pretty much limited to either around my area which isn't the most photogenic place or in the house.
Anyway I picked a great day to do a long exposure left work and it wasn't a bad night not to cold and fairly calm, went out with the dog about an hour ago and its windy as hell. Posting 2 shots the planned one which didn't work and the unplanned one which erm also didn't work to well lol.
The planned one this is just down the road from me I pass it everyday when I walk the dog, and It looks pretty cool when it's all lit up at night. Never actually took a shot of it before so I went out tonight and set up the tripod damn wind was so strong I had to hold on to the tripod to keep it steady, could have done with something to hold onto me to keep me steady too it was that windy lol, hence it's a bit blurry. Also took the wrong lens I think, took my 14mm sigma which I haven't used for about 6 months and I think it was a little to wide to get a decent composition.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3134/3185337241_d7023c5e53_o.jpg
Shot 2, this is the path I walk my dog along at least 3 times a day sick of the sight of it tbh, but it can be nice and peaceful at night if the weathers not to bad, I tried to portray the difference between the path at either side of the bridge where I took the shot from has a bit of light, but once you get a little way past the bridge in the distance it is pitch black for about 50 yeards so dark in fact that sometimes I can't see the dog when hes on the leader 2 foot in front of me. Needless to say I dont think this shot worked out to well either.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3123/3185337087_79da5906de_o.jpg
Ah well thats why I'm doing this to try and improve and learn from my mistakes, hopefully I will.
Anyway sorry about the long post and thanks for looking.
At least you got it done. These threads are about ups and downs and that means that on some days, you just won't get the shots you were after, but you have to post them anyway so they are still telling a story. I've already posted some really crap shots, but i'll keep plugging away!
Here's to a better day tomorrow.

I don't know Sean, I like that second shot. I like the way it leads the eye in, making me wonder what's beyond the bridge. The exposure suits the image too.
I think we're all gonna have good days and bad days on this journey. Keep going - you've got some great shots so far.

Im yet to see a crap shot of yours mate they've all been good I think the fact that they ll have some sort of meaning to you makes them even better.

Cheers Dave appreciated mate and no thoughts of giving up yet can't wait until the summer so I can think about something other than night shots or indoors on work days, bloody dark when I leave for work and dark when I leave to come home give me some evening sunshine ;)
Always wanted to try a macro of an eye, didn't have any available volunteers so had to make do with my own, took me ages to get a shot in focus with the composition right, my original idea was to use the remote shooting software on my laptop with liveview to check the focus etc. But trying to look at the laptop screen with one eye and having the other staring down the lens was impossible .
Anyway after some trial and error eventually got there pretty happy with the result although I would have liked to have gotten the catchlight on the pupil but that would have probably taken me another 50 shot's and I dont think I could handle that many more flashes :gag:

Cheers cyclone, the unedited version of yesterdays did have a lighter sky but it had a horrible orange cast to it which I didn't like.
I did get a couple with the catchlight on the pupil but that was using the onboard flash i prefered the shadow cast from using the flash off camera.
Aye, another good shot!

Thanks Marc seems Charlies still not quite right, though much better than he was, he's eating but still throwing up a little but not very often though, mainly just bile not bringing his food up, seems happy enough himself though if it doesn't stop by Monday he's going to the vets. This man flu is really getting me down though 4 days now and I still feel no better.
Anyway here's today's shot not much motivation at the minute as you can imagine so another photo of Charlie took this morning while out for his walk. I like this shot not to sure why though.

Well I'm feeling a little better today, think Charlie is too he wolfed his dinner down this morning and had a good run about. Im at my parent's house at the minute so hoping he hasn't threw up when I get back he seemed well this morning.
Well I had planned to do some portraits of my niece for today's, using my 2 head studio flash kit that I got for Christmas off my parents which hasn't been out of the box yet, it's been at my parents house since I got it as I wanted to do some family portraits with it, just never had the chance yet and today my niece went out to the cinema so that went out the window. Hopefully next Sunday as the Sunday after my sister, brother in law and niece are off to Australia for 3 weeks (Lucky gits).
Had a few shots from this mornings walk with charlie so they will have to do.

Good effort, is that the canon 100-400?
Looks to be a good lens that one.
Thanks Cyclone, yes they were shot with the 100-400, I was hoping for some bird/swan/duck shots this morning but most of them seem to have dissapeared did get a few bird shots not sure what they were little tiny things but all of them were in bare trees no leaves but loads of thin branches surrounding them, did get one that I would have been happy if I was any good at cloning.
Hard to believe the sky went from what you see in the first shot to whats in the second shot in the space of 25 minutes.

Another good days shooting Sean, keep it up
Thanks Chill, still need to shoot today's lol no idea what it's going to be yet probably out with the camera and tripod when I walk the dog later.
Sean
A few from tonight's walk just stuff that looked sort of interesting.
#1 This is a bit of unused land behind a construction company's office's I think the little archway on the left is part of the remains of the old railway station that used to be here (no trains run here at all now) the path I walk the dog along that i posted earlier used to be railway lines many years ago mainly used for carrying coal but did also have passengers.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3492/3211187412_b3284b32b8_o.jpg
#2 I have been meaning to try this shot for a while don't think it quite worked as I expected though think the starburst off the lights spoil it (really need to get a polarizer that will fit this lens) Was actually going to try to get the light trails off a car but the first thing that turned up was a bus, got a car one after this but I prefered this.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3116/3211186834_82a91cb89d_o.jpg
#3 The roadstone plant down on the industrial estate again I think spoilt a little by the starbursts.

Those are really good Sean. Love the star effect of the lights.
Thanks Marc I think the star effects are a bit too mch but I don't have a polariser that will fit this lens at the moment.
Well I thought it was about time I let you guys see my ugly mug, Im still feeling like crap and pretty tired but I dont look much better normally .
This is my first attempt at a self portrait made a bit more difficult by not having a battery in my shutter remote so I could't use autofocus took a bit of trial and error, my studio flashes are still at my parent's house so had to make do with 2 speedlights, a canon 430ex on camera and a Nikon SB800 fired optically behind me to bleach the wall I couldn't quite get it to cover the full wall so you may notice a little dodgy cloning at the top of the white.
I take no responsibility and will not reimburse you for the food you have ate tonight ;)

That's not bad at all Sean. I don't have any studio lights so I use 2 flashguns, one on a tripod and one on a monopod and fire them remotely using the onboard flash.
Thanks Marc it is something I'd like to try more of, portraits and people shots that is can't find any willing victims though only my neice but I only see her once a week for a few hours.

I'd like to see a shot revisited when you have your studio lights
Sean, I find a bit of careful work with the dodge tool works well on a white BG. It's pretty easy to remove the stray pink / yellow bits. If you set it to highlights with a low value it doesn't matter if you catch something you don't want lighter, it tends to leave those alone.

Cheers Cycone Im not sure where the yellow has come from there was nothing yellow behind me lol, doing the editing on my laptop and it all looks white seen the pic on my iphone today and the yellow bits show loads rather strange, I'll give that ago on the next white background shot I try thanks mate

Heres today's don't worry Im not in any of them, done a very rare thing tonight took the dog out and kept walking until I got to the motorway it's a fairly long walk and a lot of it is in pitch darkness, anyway got some nice light trails and a cracking view of gateshead over the other side of the river which doesn't seem to transfer well as a photo looks great when your there though.
I also walked down to the business park on the way back to take a shot of the entrance road which I think looks quite nice.

No problems mate, USB Overcurrent error been doing it for ages seems to be the usb port on the right side of the keyboard, says something is drawing to much power from it even though theres nothing plugged in, then disables it. Bit strange can't figure out whats causing it.
Thanks mate night stuff is pretty much all i get time to do on work days as its dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home, roll on the light nights, anyway day off tomorrow so hoping for something a bit brighter.
Sean
Mine had the same problem after somebody here spilled a cup of tea over the keyboard.
Sorry Sean, must have missed yesterday's shot. Not a bad SP but would have liked to see more light from the monitor. Some really good light trails from tonight.

Cheers Chris, I sometimes browse on my Iphone at lunchtime at work i isn't to bad for typing on but lack of time usually stops me.
Had a little sunshine today was still bloody cold though, didn't manage to get out and about anywhere except for an hour and a half with the dog. Wanted to get some bird shots nothing interesting unfortunatly, shooting birds is a pain in backside with a dog that likes to chase after most things that move.
Anyway heres the best of a bad bunch. Need more practice, and if anyone can I.D them it would be appreciated.

Well eventually got around to having ago with my interfit kit thankfully it didn't blow up. Not had much experience shooting portraits so would like some C&C on these if possible, didn't have a background to use and not much room to play with as these were shot in my mum's living room which is currently full of suit cases as my sister, brother in law and niece are packing to go to Australia next week.
Anyway this is my niece Bethany who loves to be in front of the camera.

If I have to give critique, I'd say the white balance may be a teensy bit off in the first, skin looks a little reddish to me. In the second, thbackround top right is a little distracting.

You may have seen this model in a couple of shots I've posted on the forums before thought I'd try and find a different way of lighting it. Not the most interesting of subjects I know but I'm running out of things around here and Im not to keen on self portraits, not keen on being on the otherside of the camera as it is but it's even worse after looking at the couple I have posted this cold has made me look like crap .

Did you try bribery :)
Yes went through quite a few dog sweet's  I think it's because of how close I was having to get with the camera to get him to fill the frame.
Did you try a clamp? :D
never thought of that
Well first month done surprised I've gotten this far, must admit Im really struggling lately I just don't get the time to get out and about after work, so am ending up either shooting stuff in the lightbox, or Charlie. It's getting a bit disheartening to be honest I don't think I'm really getting anywhere since I started this to help me improve, still going to keep it up hopefully things will pick up.
Anyway on to todays shot no inspiration again today so decided to shoot my kit (thanks cyclone), no camera in shot, taken with my 40D and a cheapo Cosina 100mm lens which was given to me when I got my first DSLR.
Pretty crap picture really used the SB-800 on optical slave mode to light it and the onboard flash which didn't quite give the reach I needed to light the whole box due to the distance needed with the 100mm. Didn't realise how bad that lens actually is image looks terrible.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3418/3241807875_565bb9b0da_o.jpg
Kit starting top left, Canon 100-400L, Nikon SB-800, Nikon SB-600, Canon 430EX, Marumi Ringflash, Sigma 14mm EX F2.8, Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro and Sigma 24-70mm F2.8.
Not shown Canon 40D, Interfit EX150 Kit, Interfit background stand (no background yet), Velbon Tripod and about 5 camera bags of various sizes.
Just wish I had more time to use it all :(
Sean

Just catching up again Sean. Those are good portrait shots there - well lit. I like the model ones too. I know what you mean about lack of inspiration - I've been feeling the same this last week due to a busy work schedule, but don't give up, you've got some great shots so far - it's just a bad few days - I expect we all have had them or are going to have them. :)
My sister's dog Bess shot with Canon 100mm Macro onboard flash and Nikon SB-800 above to the right. She's getting on a bit but sh's a lovely natured dog very friendly loves to be stroked keeps barking at you if you stop stroking her :).

Well you have 2 proper bits of kit there mate :D
Seriously, wish I could get something that would stand up against the Canon 100-400, probably the one thing I wish Nikon did that Canon do.
Yeah love the 100-400 mate just wish I got more opportunity to use it, out of interest what would you say was the second proper bit of kit.
1 and 2 were the nikon flashes
Ahhh lol had the sb-800 for a couple of months just picked up the 600 very cheap the other day just the flash and the case no stand, so looking to pick one up and a set of triggers, and some flash/umberella brackets so I can use them.
Sean

Here's yesterday's shot, was trying a few things out las night when my camera decided to go mental, it started by constantly pre flashing and trying to autofocus, none of the buttons would respond. Turned it off took the battery out hoping that would sort it ... put the battery back in and it was still trying to focus constantly after about 10 minutes of panicking and messing about I figured out what it was, seems my shutter button is sticking I can unstick it by pressing it a little to one side but it sticks after pretty much every shot bit of a pain in the arse. Chances are it going to have to go back to Canon to get repaired, Im going to pop into Jessops on Saturday and see what they say as I have 3 years accidental damage cover on it with them. This is the 2nd 40D Ive had since may last year the first one gave error 99 after about 6 weeks, now this Im a bit dissapointed to say the least.
Anyway heres yesterday's shot still trying to think of something for today.

Great models Sean. What are they?
Ive honestly got no idea Dave had them for about 7 years. I used to run a business selling collectible cards etc. at comic fairs I picked them up from one of them, just liked the look of them.
Sean
Well seems the shutter button on my 40D is rather knackered bloody thing has only done about 4500 shots or so :(, it will only shoot in manual focus and even then it's hit and miss if the shutter actually fires just took me 15 minutes to shoot 5 shots so looks like its going back to Canon. So probably going to be no shots for a while as I sold my mate my old 350D, not sure how long it will take to get it repaired so I think for now I will reprocess some old shots to get some photoshop practice in and post one of those per day. Will start tomorrow.
Sean
Sorry to hear that Sean, hope you get it fixed quickly. Cameraphone shots count as well you know.

Keep at it, it'll make you think more with the limits imposed on you by the phone camera :)
thanks guys I decided against using the Iphone since most of my 365 is shot indoors or at night at the minute and its not rreally very good at either situation, but been getting withdrawal symptoms feeling a bit lost with no camera. Taking the 40D back to Jessops tomorrow hoepfully will get it sorted soon, but today I picked up a 30D body for a very good price, I knew I should have kept my old 350D it saved me when my first 40D went belly up. Ah well prefer the 30D to the 350D so hanging on to it nice to have a second body.
Oh and Charlies back to first shot with the 30D.

Well the 40D went back to Jessops today it's going to take 4 to 6 weeks to get back really glad I got this 30D now. On my way back from Jessops I popped into Waterstones and picked up a little reading that I've been meaning to get for quite a while. Also remembered to pick up a battery for my shutter remote that bloody hurt £4.99 for 1 small battery.

Book was £17.99 in Waterstones I know I could have saved a few quid getting it from Amazon but it's much more enjoayable buying something and having it there and then ;) .
Yep the grid is fun can get some pretty cool efffects with it (need some more practice to get the most from it though) I'm going to make some more different sized ones soon, that one was made using black card and white straws as I couldn't find any black ones went all round town yesterday looking for them, but my mUms going to get me some black ones from work so going to try some other stuff with them too.
Went to the Chinese New Year Celebrations in Newcastle today, it was postponed last week due to the football, Im pretty glad as I would have missed it last week. It was absolutely packed with people so a lot of my shots where done holding the camera above my head, damn 40D picked a good time to die as the Live view would have made that so much easier. Anyway got a few shots I was happy with considering the conditions.

Well it's not a real snoot in as you would usually see, I took some black card cut cover the end of the grid then cut a small circle in the centre of it not ideal and Im not sure it gives the same effect as a conventional snoot does but it modifies the light and thats what I was trying to achieve.

Not to sure I would have liked to walk down there with my kit in the dark it is completely unlit and very much out of the way takes about 20 minutes to walk there and Id' guess half of that is in complete darkness, but your right it could have been a cool shot shame mister snowman didn't survive until the dark.
Pretty boring shot but quite exciting for me, today I applied to get my driving license back after 10 years or so with out it (well actually done it yesterday but as I had some shots to post I saved it for today).
Yes I was young and stupid and got banned for a year but I never bothered to get it back as I knew I wouldn't be able to afford insurance as I hadn't been driving long after getting banned. Well now I'm no longer young and stupid I've decided its time to get behind the wheel again, well probably in a couple of months after I've saved a bit cash. The main reason for this was so I can travel further afield and visit interesting places to go shooting. Really looking forward to being able to get out and shoot some motorsport , visit some wildlife parks etc. and hopefully it will help me get out of my horrible life sucking job and into something better :)

Good on you Sean. It'll open up a whole new togging world as well!
I know Marc I'm really looking forward to it, its horrible being tied to such a small area because of the limits of public transport and carrying kit around, it's not going to happen overnight will probably be at least a couple of month before i get a car but I can't wait :)
A shot in daylight outside and not of Charlie ;)
I've got no idea what type of brid it is so if anyone can i.d. it would be appreciated.

Can't tell you what it is, but it's a good shot. Birds deliberately go fuzzy when I point a camera at them, I think it's a form of camouflage. :bang:
It's a cormorant I believe, nice picture :)

Thanks Marc, some thing usually happens with me thats why I was pleased with this one.

Thanks Nawty I really need to learn more about what I'm shooting, but it's hard enough learning to shoot
So do you have to have a re-test? Or just wait for the license to turn up?
Good bird shot, I find them frustratingly difficult :bang:
Cheers Cyclone as far as I know I shouldn't have to do a retest, I just have to wait and see I suppose, I really hope not main reason being the expense.
Considering I really didn't feel like shooting anything tonight (too tired) I'm pretty pleased with the way this turned out, it's not quite there but still quite happy with it.
Shot with 430EX on camera with the grid and the SB-800 into a silver reflector which I got on Sunday slightly behind charlie to the right also used my interfit popup background which I got off ebay last week for the first time ;)

You have good reason to be pleased with it. That's a cracking shot!
I agree, dogs are hard to take pictures of. I can tell what charlie is thinking though.

Sean
That's lovely Sean, you're doing really well with the lighting.
Thanks Marc I'm really enjoying it, next thing I want to learn is how to get a black background without actually having a black background if you know what I mean . I've read a lot of stuff about having the background black even though it wasn't I need to do more reading I think ;)

Not a clue Sean, until I googled it.
It's a bounce flash attachment??
Not quite mate, will leave it until later tonight to see if anyone can figure it out or find it doesn't seem to be much on google about it.
Is it part of a ring flash set up?
Both close as in it's something to do with flash but not quite there.
Boring shot's tonight went for a pint with a mate from work so was late getting home and am rather tired, anyway heres the answer to yesterdays apparently its a macro flash attatchment unfortunatley its pre digital and and the flash bodies I have are to big to attach to the adaptor to have the flash lay flat across the camera and lens as seen on the box.
Not to worry only cost me £8 off ebay and I think it could be used for some pretty interesting efects as each spot can be filtered independantly and it comes with coloured filters you can also have it so only one side lights. It seems to give a nice wide even spread too quite capable of lighting a portrait I think.

Interesting new toy you got there :D
I like that one Sean, does that flash come with its own generator??
I like that one Sean, does that flash come with its own generator??
Runs on 800 AA batteries and on full power gives a similiar ammount of heat as a small nuclear warhead which is a bit of a downside as I keep obliterating subjects ;)
I really like the mixed lighting effect on the car, looks cool.

That style could catch on! :D
Yea I have always been a trend setter ;)
I really used to enjoy playing on my Xbox 360 found it a nice way to relax after a day at work but I haven't bothered with it for months now. So I bought myself a new game today and am going to have a play tonight. Shot didn't go to plan batteries were pretty much dead in the flash so it kept switching itself off, after about 15 minutes of trying I settled on this one not quite what I was after but I didn't want to wait until I charged the batteries up and mess about doing it late on tonight, Will maybe revisit it later in the year and try to get the effect I was after.

Like the idea on 51 - you can just make out its a persons head. Perhaps it would have more impact if it was mid-game
Nice idea Sean. Could have done with just a tad more definition in your head, but I'm guessing you already knew that. ;)

Thanks chris I was going to do it mid game but I was using a slowish shutter speed to get the tv screen bright enough so it probably would have ended up a bit of a blurred mess, I'll give it another go when I have some life in my flashes.

Cheers Marc yeah I should have used a smaller aperture, was experimenting at the time but got a bit frustrated when the flash was not firing  and I wanted to get on and have a game.
I have that game Sean, bad news is it's not as good as Cod 4!!
Good news is that it's still good!!

Well I said a little while back I was going to figure out how to get a black backround without actually having one and I think I've cracked it after a bit of experimenting tonight.
