Why is it that alot of the cat`s expressions seem to say "Sod off, I`m trying to sleep and you`re disturbing me!"

Not exactly the most tidy looking shot due to the background but he seem to know when a camera is about to be pointed at him and makes a dash for it. Hence this very spur-of-the-moment type shot.
You could literally see your face on his shiny glossy coat.
Chad is very handsome indeed, lovely to meet him.

im going to join in this thread, unfortunately I havent had my Dslr very long and have no cat shots. however 5 years ago I went to woburn abbey with my other half. I took this shot on my olympus point and shoot. At the time I was very chuffed with the shot especially considering the equipment I was using, anyway im sure using my new camera I could get better.
edited - sorry its so big flickr resizes it with a big line across it

This is Smeggy, she'll be 19 in June.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3526/3184361323_fdb72c03cd.jpg
She came to us in 1995 from The Cat Protection League in Birmingham with her daughter Mags, who died of kidney failiure in 2004.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3310/3185208484_8d5ce8b827.jpg
She's cost us an absolute fortune over the years, she has a long medical history including having HRT treatment, her heart stopping under the anaesthetic when she had all her teeth removed, half her fur falling out.....yet still she soldiers onward, spending most of her days sleeping and eating. Having said that she's still more than capable of catching the odd bird, even if she can't actually do anything with them when she does!

aawww!! *steals Bertie*
Lol! he is a cutie, and has a fantastic personallity, although not so great when he comes and wakes ya up at 6 on a sunday morning!!, But nah he is a very photogenic cat, not had a bad one of him yet, Yet Ole is so so hard to get a decent picture of him, i think its because he is all black so there is no releif in him, so you can get a bit of contrast, anyone got any ideas as he is a stunner, but i can't manage to get a decent photo of him!!
many thanks
Matt :)

Hehe, thanks - yes, he's a Maine Coon, well spotted! As for having him... try asking me at five in the morning when he's scratching and howling at the door to be fed and let out! I may well say yes!:annoyed::lol:
Please dont disturb.

Ian, do you find black cats difficult to shoot? I find my black cat quite frustrating to shoot TBH.
Here's a pic of her...

OK she's been shopped a little (but only background and shape of image, not actually changed her at all)

Yeah I do find it hard, however my cat is one of the only things that moves in the house so I've had a few hours practice getting things right. I usually underexpose by more than one stop and then check the histogram - if it's good I might up the exposure a bit and try again. I've found that panning, although possible, is even harder to do than static shots!
Both the shots have had some element of post-processing, the second one more than the first. I think the first one was sharpened around the eyes and the green levels adjusted.
Hope this helps. :)
Edit: Also, with your cat being both black and white, you have an even finer line to tread. You'll have to be careful that you don't blow the white fur when exposing for the black.

Yeh, she' terrible to get a nice picture with and TBH I don't like changing things in photoshop or whatever (it's actually a major pet hate of mine - obvious "monkied with" images) The white and black Mainecoon is beautiful to get pics with - but not as easy as the tortie and white mainecoon, lol

Cool cats. :) Yeah I went from hating anyone that PP'd, to then tweaking things in Lightroom and then I realised I didn't know when to stop, lol. Now I try and cut back and do as little as possible (although the photos I posted are before I started cutting back, especially the second one). I'm trying to get to a stage whereby my photos have improved enough to only need minor tweaks anyway. Buttt.. I guess that's for another thread. :)
Awesome thread! Cats are the best :)

It's kitties and dogs. And it's VERY hard to walk out of there empty handed everytime. Which is why we now have 4cats, instead of 2 :naughty::lol: I want that ickle white kitten, the one that isn't the only one awake and cheeky as anything :p

If you want someone who will eat whatever you put in front of him
and never say its not quite as good as his mother's
..then adopt a dog.
If you want someone always willing to go out, at any hour,
for as long and wherever you want ...
..then adopt a dog.
If you want someone who will never touch the remote, doesn't care
about football, and can sit next to you as you watch romantic movies
..then adopt a dog.
If you want someone who is content to get on your bed just to
warm your feet and whom you can push off if he snores
..then adopt a dog !
If you want someone who never criticizes what you do, doesn't care
if you are pretty or ugly, fat or thin, young or old, who acts as if
every word you say is especially worthy of listening to, and loves
you unconditionally, perpetually ..
..then adopt a dog.
BUT, on the other hand, if you want someone who will never come
when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair
all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night and only
comes home to eat and sleep, and acts as if your entire existence
is solely to ensure his happiness .,
.
.
.
.
.
.
..then adopt a cat!
Now be honest, you thought I was gonna say... marry a man, didn't you?
Send this to all the women you know to brighten their day.
Send this to all the men just to annoy them!
You...
....have a GREAT Day!!!

beautiful pictures Sam, love the lighting in the first one - my cat is VERY unphotogenic and gets obviously upset if you point a camera at her - shame because shes sooo beautiful :)
real pleasure to look at thanks Sam xx
also i think the last two could do with lightening up a bit, we want black blacks and white whites, they are a bit grey at the moment but can be fixed with a simple bit of photoshop x
This is our cat Spooky. She rarely keeps still unless asleep, and if she sees a camera will immediately try to rub her face against the lens. This is one of the few pics I have of her, shot with on camera flash and Sto-fen diffuser.

Ian, when did you go? I was looking to go to that park back in 99 or 2000 I think, but opted out once the 'trouble' started in Zimbabwe. I always fancied the walks, but think I'd prefer a guided one...a few years older now and having seem them from a jeep close up in the wild not sure I'd have the bottle. Must have been an incredible experience

Hi Al, I am extremely fortunate to have friends in Zim and we (they!!!) organise an annual 'boys week away' in Mana, so I have been 9 times over the last 12 years, and, god willing, I return for 8 days on Oct 21st later this year.
It is a stunning, stunning part of the world and sufficiently remote to have been largely unaffected by the troubles (though the national Parks guys who take care of the place are most certainly horribly underfunded).
Walking in the bush most certainly is not for everyone, but having spent so long doing it, I think I would now feel very constrained going on a more organised safari.
I am 'Destination Expert' on the (very quiet!) Tripadvisor Mana Pools forum, so any questions please ask away!

Hi Ian
Thanks for that, I did read loads about it and it looked amazing, if I remember you could do a good trip kayaking down and end up in Mana. TBH the whole of Zimb looked amazing, ended up in NZ instead which was amazing as well.
Went to Zambia a couple of years ago, not sure how it compares but the Lower Zambezi was great (is it opposite Mana?), we saw less than in S Luanga but the Kayak and the fact we only saw one other jeep over 4 days made it seem very remote - also went to S Luanga, we saw more (both animals and people) - I will go back to Zambia at some point and I hope Zim. For now though first child on the way in Jan, so France and spain is about as far as I'll be going for the next few years...
Your trips sounds amazing, you should post a series if you can post your Oct one.
My only true walking safari was in Nepal, ended up in a tree for about an hour waiting for an angry Rhino to pass....liked it but our guide was crazy - 30 minute lecture on how dangerous they are then started throwing stones towards so it would turn around :cuckoo: It did, we ran....thankfully it didn't. Opted not to use him again....
Some brilliant photos in here of cats thought i might add one to it as well

Yes the canoeing safaris are very popular - they start upstream of Mana, a little way down from the Kariba dam wall, and take 3 - days paddling slowly downstream,
It can be pretty hairy - a couple of years ago we came across a guide looking after piles of wet kit. A hippo had bitten across one of the canoes...and a girls legs (thankfully no serious damage done) but this chaos resulted in all of their guest in the river with upset hippos & countless crocodiles - not really ideal! They were fortunate no-one was hurt. I have also heard tell of less fortunate outcomes!
The Zambezi river forms the boundary between Zim & Zam, so yes if you where in southern Zambia, you would look across the river to Zimbabwe. I would love to visit Luangwa in Zambia - I spoke to David Shepherd (wildlife artist) a few years ago and asked him where he would choose to go to view African wildlife & he said South Luangwa.
After your experiences in Napal (which sound excellent to me....other than the guide behaving very badly), I think you are well cut-out for Mana. We have been chased by elephant & lion a number of times over the years!

This is my cat Poppy, she has a habit of dangling her legs like this when she relaxes. Whether it is in her own bed or on one of the sofas.
