Possibly a Queen ant larvae according to my girlfriend. She dug up something that looked exactly like this on Southport beach & the ants went insane trying to protect it.

It's the larvae thing of a Maybug (cockchafer). I only know that cos we dug a few up in the garden last year!
cockchafer
I know pretty much every bloke on here crossed their eyes and went ouch when they read that ;)
I asked the question on another forum :naughty: and somebody suggested it was a Stag Beetle Larva , I had a quick google & it looks just like one
Esp from the famous dinkle spotter!
Looks like you scared it :)

Could be any of these (http://www.ptes.org/work/baps/documents/LarvaeID.pdf#search=%22cockchafer%20larvae%22). Take your pick. They all look pretty grusome :gag:

It came from a rotten tree stump (old Elm) , had a look inside the remains of the stump and there are quite a few burrowing into the stump so I guess it's one of the Beetles (possible Ringo , he always looked weird)
Oh and it wasn't hairy , so unless cockchafers have started shaving ..........:nono:
