I started off with a Nikon F65, moved onto an F80 and now use a D70 (as do several others on this forum). I still have both film cameras, and the F65 might be up for grabs, if you're interested...

would it be digital?

£200 probably wouldn't get you a DSLR and lenses if you tried, although you may be able to get a film SLR and kit lens for less.

It would also buy you a compact/second hand prosumer digital.

When I bought my EOS 500N on eBay the body and two lenses (bought separately) cost me about £160 all told. Film body prices have come down since then too. Just taken a quick look now....within ten minutes there is an EOS 500 ending at under £30 (will have finished by now) and a canon 28-80 lens which would be good enough to get you started for under £20.

Go for it - you honestly have SO little to lose in the first place!

Canon EF lenses fit Canon EOS cameras.

Nikon F Lenses fit Nikon cameras

You just need to check the fitting. The one notable issue is that Canon FD mount lenses will not fit Canon EOS bodies (and vice versa)

If you want to get into photography you don't need to buy an slr, there are many other digital cameras you can choose from in your price range.
