View Full Version : John Lindsay's 52 - A Photo A Week for a Year UPDATED to Week 22

John Lindsay

I'm going to give this a go.

Not been on the forum in a while but was thinking before the new year that I'd like to do something along the lines of the 365's. Most notably Jimmy Lemon's made me want to give this a go, has been quite a bit of an inspiration.

Not only that I don't take enough photo's, it's a fact. My dad gets on to me from time to time, saying that I've got more photography equipment than you could shake a stick at and I don't make the most of it.

I decided to do this when on a "photographic expedition" before New Year and as such I'm cheating with my first photo because it wasn't taken this week.

So you may say this is the Photo that really made me actually go through with it so I think it's okay to cheat with it, plus I really do like it! :p

Hope I can keep it up for the rest of the year. :)

Awesome shot to start with John, really has the wow factor and great lighting. Good luck for the rest of the year and look forward to seeing more.

Are you heading over to Mull in a few weeks or to the Snowman next month?

John Lindsay

Hi Ross,

Thanks for the comments.

Not sure if I'll be at Mull, I'll be working but dad will be there I think.

Snowman... Again not sure, I should probably book days off for all the rallies in advance this year.

Whether you took the shot this week or not it's good and if you have the intention to go out and shoot a fresh image every week then that's the main thing.

I think I would like to see some light on the bridge itself, just the sides seem odd somehow  not sure why, and not even sure if that was done the shot would be any better.

Beagletorque
10-01-2009, 13:19
it's a bit torched!

John Lindsay
11-01-2009, 09:26
I have other shots of the same location where I've lit up the inside of the bridge with the torch and after looking through them all, I'm glad this one has no light there.

Main reason being possibly because the bridge is shut and locked off and its got a big fence up, on the fence are a few big white signs saying no entry or whatever.

I also quite liked the suspense created, as by not being able to see what's in there it makes you think about what could be there, a kind of road to nowhere type thing.

Week 2: Upon A Hill

Spotted this shot out the window on the way back from a day out with the bike's at Glentress, had been a dreadful day, got pretty soaked, and wasn't too happy with the pics of the biking, so I was pleased when I seen the colours in the sky on the way home. Pulled in at the side of the road and took a few shots, there was an old building at the same level as these trees, which is what first caught my attention, it had no roof, and a tree (similar to these) growing right beside it. I've gone for this one as I like the way these 2 trees seem to be there alone, with one leaning in to the other to watch the sunset on the other side.

It was originally a portrait shot, but I preferred it cropped to landscape format. I've also done a little levels and curves work on the sky and foreground separately to bring out the colours in the sky.

SimonTALM

Great composition with the line of the hill leading you down to the trees placed on the 1/3rds and the dark top right mirrors the dark bottom left quite effectively. The colours are stunning I really like the dark green of the grass.

This is an image shot for a college project. The idea of the project is to shoot an image suitable for the cover of "Dazed and Confused" magazine. The magazine cover is usually something a bit 'out there' that's kinda what I was going for here.

Model: My Girlfriend, Iona Lawson

Make-Up & Hair: Patriche McGuire

John

SimonTALM

I don't know the magazine, but it is clearly a good shot. I really like the back lighting even if it is highlighting lots of stray hairs (perhaps this is the magazine style, as I said I don't know it). Is the exposure to the front done with a side light to the right and I'm I'm guessing reflector on the left. I notice a lack of distinctive catchlights in the eyes (there are some but they merge with the eyebrows) was this deliberate?

Could you also tell me are the ears actually made up to orange as the forehead appears to be or is this a trick of the back lighting? What ever the case I think it works.

One thing I'm not sure on but I would have thought that if this is for a magazine wouldn't they need a bit of space at the top of the image for the masthead?

It is a great image and as well talented you are a lucky boy ;) I hope you treat her well

John Lindsay
21-01-2009, 20:00
Hi Simon, thanks for those nice comments, she says I do treat her well, so I'll just have to try and keep that up... :p

In research I've been doing recently I've been finding that the name of the magazine, usually vogue, the letters of the magazine name take second place to the cover shot. That's what I was planning to do with this.

Got some without the backlighting, and they work well too, but I like it catching up the stray hairs. I'm trying to think how I achieved this final light setup. There's 5 lights involved. One directly behind, with two back 3/4. There's one lamp directly in front, above camera pointing down at about 45 degree's, fitted with a beauty dish. There's also another lamp with the same fitment behind it, which is pointing off to the side. I think I found the modelling lamp on the front light to be enough to illuminate the face, and the back one, flashing to nowhere was giving the catchlight in the eyes. There's a large reflector parallel with the floor being held just out of shot to the bottom, throwing light back up into the face. Sorry if that made no sense, however... I understand it (almost) :cuckoo:

There's no makeup on the ears, I can only assume they've gone translucent with the backlighting, the makeup is absolutely wonderful, there's a lot of work gone into it, and I'm sure it shows.

I'll post up some other shots from the day aswell.

Again, part of the fashion brief for college, this is a friend of mine, also conveniently a model. Off camera flash to the right hand side just to put a little bit of fill in and light up her face and the jacket a little bit. Tried some other shots in other outfits but this was the final one, and the cream coloured coat just seemed to really fit in with the surroundings, I really liked the pose here aswell.

C&C Again, as always very welcomed.

John

SimonTALM
28-01-2009, 18:35
Another great image, I like can really see this as an advertising image for the coat manufacturer in their Autumn catalogue, there is nice space for "blurb". The pose is very "fashion" and the composition is great. I love the way the face is placed on the 3rds and the path (and right leg - as we see it) draws the eye from to the coat. The DoF is also judged to perfection too.

If I had to be really picky, I struggle to see the right side of the belt as it seems to hide in the pocket outline, it contrasts too much with the left side which is really clear (but as usual I am really having to look to find anything negative).

John Lindsay
28-01-2009, 19:41
Hi Simon,

Thanks once again. Not totally sure what you mean about the belt hiding, unless you mean the model's right side, (Left Hand Side as we look at it) where the highlight is causing the belt to blend in too much as it goes round the back? Or is it the 'dangly down' bit (for want of a better expression)

It's the "dangly down" bit on the model's left (our right) that seems to blend with the pocket. Did I say I was having to look really hard :D

But now you say it the belt loop on the left (model's right) does look a little odd sticking out.

John Lindsay
29-01-2009, 21:10
I had noticed the belt loop myself, and wondered if it needed removing, however, hindsight is a wonderful thing, I've already got them printed for college submission, and one on my newly created "gallery wall"

Hi John. I seemed to have missed your posts for the last couple of weeks. Sorry. Catch up time now. :)

Week 2: I love the colour in the sky and the composition works very well. Also like the landscape crop. All very effective.

Week 3: I bet you had loads of fun doing this shoot. The make up, hair pose and lighting all combine to make an 'edgy' portrait. At first I thought your girl friend's expression was meant to be dazed and confused - but read the small print, Jean :bonk: - it's the title of the mag. As Simon says, you'd need a bit of space at the top for the masthead for a cover, but as a portrait shot it's excellent. I love the way the creative make up is enhanced by her pose and you've made good use of the backlighting.

Week 4: imo, this shows great control of the lighting. It would have been easy to go ott. Again, Simon beat me to it - a good catalogue/fashion article shot. :) I would have cloned out the belt loops, that's if I'd spotted them before it was too late. :D

That cover is ace. I hope you were thrilled with it. I like the way the masthead fits in behind your girlfriend's head - the letter 'Z' is clearly a 'Z' even though it's slightly hidden. I hope she was pleased with the way it turned out. The backlighting gives excellent separation from the black background. The total effect is very eyecatching - stunning. Oh yeah, I do like it very much. Well done :):)

A shot inspired by 'Pink Floyd - Money' in the video to this song there's clips of a 10 pence piece spinning round and round. And I wondered how I could try to create that in a photo. I thought about longer shutter speeds with a burst of flash to freeze the spinning coin. I couldn't get this to work at all as there's no way I could spin the coin and get it to sit in the one position. So instead I found this cool reflective black plastic stuff, it's a drawer liner, or organiser or something from my mums office cabinet, so I stood the coin up on it with a bit of blu-tac in behind to support it. Turned all the lights out and shot inside what was basically a wee cave. 25 Seconds at f5.6 and I'm really pleased with the result!

I'm the official photographer for this year's Scottish Rally Championship. The first round of which was on Saturday in Inverness. The Snowman Rally. It certainly lived up to it's name. The snow was more than knee deep. This is one of my favourite shot's of the day. It was originally shot in portrait format and I've cropped it back to landscape.

Hi John. Sorry I've missed the last couple of weeks - this is catch up time for me. :)

Week 6 Mr Muscle: You've nailed a great cover shot again. The pose is good - and he doesn't look at all out of shape to me. :D:D You've used the shadows to give him good muscle definition and he looks relaxed in front of the camera, so you must have put him at his ease. (All your models look so chilled!)

Week 7 Snowman Rally

I don't really know how to comment on this constructively (I know nothing about cars) It looks a nicely composed shot with the car well focussed and I guess it was moving pretty fast.

Week 8 Strike!

A well-timed action shot. The footballer's face is brilliant - you've caught his total concentration and determination beautifully. The background's a bit disappointing, but that's outside your control, so - yes - like it very much.

Snowman Rally - another great composition from you. You really get a sense of the speed with the snow flying from the back wheels.

John, I can't believe I've missed your shots for the last few weeks.

Your cover shots are great, I think you'll nail that project at college.

The 10p shot is great, love the effect of the reflection, the lighting is spot on to capture the detail and the exposure is great (not an easy shot that).

Your Rally shot is good, although I think a lower perspective would be more dramatic this is a bit too high up. However, I appreciate that this is not always possible (safe) :D

Football - really great shot, although I note you shot this on f6.4 which seems a little small to me. I would have thought f4 or wider would have been better to get the background more OOF.

Website - not really a picture but I think too many togs have black backgrounds on their websites so to me it looks a little clichéd .

This is Patriche, the girl who done the makeup for my Dazed Cover Shot. Nadia, a girl in Patriche's class at college was needing some shots taken for her graded unit, and I stepped in to help, as she was really struggling for time, so it was a bit of a rush to get everything organised but it all came together in the end.

C&C as always much appreciated.

Time for a mega catch up from me and sorry (again) for not keeping up :(

Charity - does what it says on the tin

Windmills - don't know why you feel let down by this as I think it's a fantastic, atmospheric shot :clap:

Sideways - Like Jean I'm not an afficionado but I love the sense of movement this has with the dust kicking up behind it :clap:

Patriche - I love the upper body part of this short but something about the perspective makes her right leg appear foreshortened and the sole of the shoe is a big black distraction for me. Perhaps have the leg at a slightly differnt angle (whilst maintaining her modesty :naughty:) would work better?

I agree with Bruja re Patriche, im not 100% sure the angle of her legs is right. I do like the way all the tones tie in with each other :)

I'm with Jill and Ruth on this - I love the perspective but would like to see a slightly different positioning of her legs. The angle of her left thigh isn't very flattering - I'm sure she's got fabulous pins. :) And it's a little bit at odds with the very glamorous 50's look you've created so well.

You've definitely got an eye for images that would be ideal for high-end glossy mags.:clap:

I like the jumping shot more than the sitting down shot (I think the one sitting down is too orange, there are marks on her knees plus I'm not sure she'd be that impressed about making her thighs and bum look big ;))

The jumping shot looks like she's jumped right out of her skirt, but that just could be me not getting fashion . Still like it though

A slinky, coming down a set of home made steps! Normal size house stairs are too long for the slinky to go from one step to the next. This is part of a college project for my graded unit based on Applied photography, so expect to see some more stuff along these lines in the coming weeks!

Of the two Week 13 shots, I prefer the first one. Despite my comment on the pose (positioning of her legs) the overall look of the shot is stylish retro 50s - and very well done at that. (The marks on her legs could easily be cloned out.)

The jumping shot is photographically very good but the lively energy in the shot doesn't sit very well with your model's ladylike and glamorous appearance, and as Bruja said the necklace is a bit distracting. This would be a great pose for her to wear her hair in a casual 'flyaway' style, a little less blusher and cute shorts and top, to give a sort of sexy, girl-next-door image. Just rereading your original post, and realise Patriche may have been styled like this for Nadia's graded unit, in which case I realise you had to go with the outfit and makeup. So I should probably just shut up and move on to -

WEEK 14: This is fun, colourful and crazy - it love it.:thumbs:

You've got just enough light on the stair risers to define them, and I like the light on the static slinky. I bet this was fun to shoot! Look forward to lots more. :)

After seeing a shot a long time ago of a backlit tennis ball, where all the wee hairs were highlighted and thought it looked great I decided I would try a different 'spin' on it.

What do you guys think?

Hi Hyster.

Its set up with the tennis ball on an elastic band hanging from anything really, 2 remote flash guns, one at either side, to the back of the ball.

Ball then dipped in water, the elastic band twisted and the ball was then let go, and fire away.

Actually pretty simple!

Bit of a catch up for me. :)

Week 15: Love the graphic quality, the processing and the timing of the drips and drops. Excellent.

Week 16: Another 'Excellent' from me on this one. You say it's simple, but I'd never have thought of it - or executed it so well. Very, very clever - and great to do something different.:clap:

Boing - Brilliant, although I think there might be a slight lean top to the right??

Drip - Another great shot. Being at my most picky I think it feels a little off balance as the drip in the middle glass is at the same height as the splash in the last glass. I would have liked to see the drip being a fraction higher in the middle glass (perhaps 1/2 way between the first and last heights)

Spin - Best of the 3 IMO, simple yet very effective. It looks almost planet like

Well I've missed posting up another weeks shot but I still took one!

I've been really busy recently getting everything together as my final submission date for college is this Friday the 15th! However now at long last it's done, and sitting in a pile waiting to go. I need to pick up some prints and that'll be it, and will just need to wait on my grade coming back!

Anyway, here's weeks 17 and 18

Week 18

The last shot in my applied/technical type Graded unit. Relieved to have it finished now, and the album looks simply brilliant.

A friend of mine turned 21 this week and someone asked me to do a sort of montage of pictures of him. This is what I've come up with as a draft, just waiting for the go-ahead however any help from you guys would be much appreciated.

also really like the light trails, the green stripes really add to it :)

Hyster

Week 17 is a great shot, horizon maybe a little squint but its very good.

Week 18 is a fine collection of pics, can't help thinking that the bottom right pic stands out as the weaker of the three, maybe its the front of the car being cut out of the frame, not sure.

jgs001
17-05-2009, 22:29
Three good shots John... you seem to have taken week 17 twice ;)...

Alison, I'm not good with taking shots of people of commenting on them... I do like the light from behind though, that's great.

I've yet to try light trails, but that one has worked really well, and I too like the green.. what was that ?

The action shots in the last one are very good, and the link to the fourth works, but as Hyster said it doesn't quite have the strength of the other 3, but I understand (I think) why it's there and within the context it works very well.

John Lindsay
19-05-2009, 15:01
Your right, I numbered them incorrectly, somehow :S

Anyway, thanks for the comments guys, The horizon is actually straight, just that it comes uphill at that point. The green lights high up are on the front of a passing truck I think!

The stationary shot in the montage is more of a laugh, as the guy has a habit of putting it off the road and that shot is just after a said moment!

Week 17 - Alison: I like the idea - a very glitzy model in a woodland setting and as John says, the light is good. I'm a bit confused about the model's 'look', though. She's glitzy in a tee-shirt, and I suppose I would have posed her in a different sort of top, but I'm way out of date on fashion and what's a 'good' look. It's still a great idea.

Week 18 - Light trails: I like these shots anyway, and the trails on this one are very nice - I'm wondering what the green ones are, too. It gets my :thumbs: Tweak the horizon a tad. :)

Week 19 - Cars: As always I don't know wht to say about cars! I like the montage idea but my eye keeps going to the sky in the bottom right pic and I think I would have cropped it to keep the car but lose the sky, or if that's not possible move it to top right. I think the angle the car's at would look better top right because it would lead the eye round the pic better. The car currently top right has got quite a lot of foreground and I think that would actually be better bottom right.

What did you go with in the end? I bet the friend was chuffed with it - which is always the most important thing. :)

I was asked to do some promotional shots for this car. It's a kit car, based on a Subaru Impreza, Engine, running gear etc. Quite a nice wee thing really! First time I've done anything like it and I'm really pleased with the shots!

Good set John. I really like Tunnocks, the stack of the signage and the old van works well for me. I like the rally car, the front wheel looks stationary, so I guess a higher shutter speed, but there's no mistaking it's going through the corner. Of the AMS, the first one doesn't really work for me I'm afraid, the background is too much in focus and I'm sort of losing the upper features of the car. The others work well though
