View Full Version : Dizzy - My 52!! 52.26 Night
Well... Up until the last few months of the 08 POTY I'd never attempted anything with fixed themes, but I really liked the way they make you think and hopefully, being forced to think and probably more importantly spend much more time with the camera there will be some improvement during the year.
It's not a huge step away from how I normally approach capturing images in so much as I'll usually go out to a specific location with something in mind rather than just wander around with the camera so I'm hoping I'll be OK. Of course, I could be rocking gently on the edge of my bed gripping my knees with a tiny amount of dribble flowing down my chin by June...
Anyway, week 1, Reflection. The shot I really wanted to do couldn't be done (sunset reflected in the strip casino skyline) as I am on late shifts all this week and wouldn't be anywhere near downtown vegas at the right time of day. The majority of the ideas I had this week had to be ruled out as I'm working right through to Sunday. Bad times.
Keeping sunset in mind I came up with this image out in the desert taken exiting Creech AFB of the sunsetting in my passenger side wing mirro! The moral this week? Always remember to keep an eye on where you've been, you might just miss out on a treat if you don't!

Good idea and a great start to you 52 :)
thanks, Toothie. I was going to hold out and try and get something I was happier with, but time's a big factor this week. Hopefully I'll have a better offering next week!

I like that, did something similar myself last year. Good start
merci! Getting very fractious now waiting for nextweeks theme...
Good start, an unusual phot. Do you have a them for next week yet?
loving the first shot keep it up
thank you. Think we get the theme on sundays. I want it now!!! :naughty:

Nice one. I hope you weren't driving at the time.
I like the colours and interpretation of the theme. I'm also waiting (with trepidation) for next week's theme. Good luck with yours. :)
Jean
I reaaly like the way the outline of the mirror frames the view and the way the road leads you through the frame. Great start and I look forward to seeing the next one.
thanks guys, really enjoying seeing all the different interpretations so far. I'm really pleased I joined in the challenge!

Good start - I'd like to see the one you couldn't do as well, sounds like a great idea
Well we have the theme for next week now, thinking caps on everyone
well, It's a sunday road trip to try and get what I want for this week. I've got a shot in mind, just hope i can find the right location. I hope it's not considered cheating going out to get the shot on the sunday, but I'm working every day next week again!

Enigmatic and sombre shot - has a cold war feel about it for me due to the line of what look's like barbed wire on the fence and a sort of 'secretive' feel about the image!
I'm rambling :)
Good start! :)
Not my cup of tea to be honest, but looking forward to your next one.
thanks guys. I've just got back from a 300mile round trip to get this weeks shot and I'm quite excited about getting them out of the camera. I had two images in mind when I left the house and couldn't quite find what I was looking for to get one, however, THINK I've got exactly what I was looking for from the second shot! Touch wood, I'll be able to post 52.2 on the first day this week. It wont last!! Hope everyone else has got their ideas for this weeks themes, good luck fellow 52'ers
I'm in a quandry and could do with some advice. The shot I really wantedand like the most has a big blown area - no way of avoiding it as it was taken inside with very bright desert sun shining through a small window into the centre of the room. Even with the blown area I still really like the image. I've a number of others from the shoot I could use instead but I personally don't rate them as highly (even though the wife prefers some of the others). So, should I go with one I know is technically flawed or go with one of the others??

Go with the one you want, regardless of "technical flaws". It doesn't have to be perfect and a blown area is irrelevant if the picture conveys what you intended.
I like the effect you've captured, it's worked really well  Good luck for the rest of the 52

INteresting shot but I like it - something about that fence that is suitably sinister
Now then, 52.2 - History. As I said before, I knew straight away where or rather what I wanted for this. So, a bit of internet research and a route planned to make it a great family day out and off we went to find a Ghost town! I was amazed to find that there are 10 ghost towns to every living town in Nevada! The one we stopped at was Rhyolite. It had a population of 8000 at it's peak but lasted only 5 years when the mines closed down. I had 3 shots which I really couldn't make my mind up, but this was the in line with what I really wanted to capture. It was inside a tiny, ramshackled 2 room 'house' and I spent quite a while sitting inside wondering what had happened here, who had lived in it and what their life could have been like. Anyway, enough rambling!!

Like this Dizzy, would do it as B&W myself but then I love B&W! :D
Thanks, fabs. I did a mono as that's usually my first course of action, but for once I had to go for the colour version. Must be sickening for something!!

Hey, great location Dizzy. That must be a wonderful place to explore. I really like this one. It's a shame the strong sunlight has blown the highlights on the mattress completely, but lighting is tricky in those kind of conditions. Great shot.
thanks, think the only way to avoid it would have been going v early in the day or hanging something over the window. Would have been very dark in there then though as that was the only light
We have an a couple of abandoned villages not too far away. One was abandoned eventually because they couldn't get power and water and the village was rebuilt on the otherside of the motorway. The second that I know of is a few streets of derelict ex-goldminers houses. They have a very similar feel to your picture and I've spent many a happy hour prowling around them.
Pity about the blown highlights. Could someone have held something over the outside of the window to shade it a little? Then you could have used a tripod and had a longer exposure. I know what you mean about time of day though. It's easy being in the right place, but also being there at the right time rather complicates things :D
Keep it going

I bet that place can tell a story or two and a great interpretation of this week's theme!
Good image , well done that man :)
I'd love to see more shots of the 'Ghost Town' itself if you have any :)
I'll pop some on when I get back from work! There's one on the end of my death valley shots in landscapes section that was taken at the ghost town
SimonTALM
14-01-2009, 17:31
I like the shot, and it shows an interesting take on the theme. I too am looking forward to seeing the rest of the shots.
With respect the blown highlight did you notice this at the time? There was one suggestion to cut the light by using someone out side, another might be to doing an HDR or Exposure Blending approach.
now that would have been a bloody good idea! Must write that on the back of my hand for next time. That's one of the things I was hoping to get out of this, making me think much more and use more techniques. I even got out of my lazy habit of leaving the camera on aperature priority and went full manual for both this and the death valley shots! Sits back feeling pleased with himself...
the rest of the ghost town shots are now up! Ghost town images (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=105906)
Good shot, a very interesting location. There's a lot of history there
thanks. May have to get my researchers hat on and start getting out to more ghost towns for a bit of a long term project I think

I bet that room could tell some stories. :D Ghost townsmust be quite eerie and spooky and this shot certainly sends shivers down my spine. The blown highlights on the mattress just add to that feeling, imo - the shaft of bright sunlight making the shadowy areas more mysterious. And I like it in colour. I'm jealous you found such a good subject. :)
Jean
it was certainly worth a 300 mile round trip!!

Great interpretation on the theme Dizzy. Looks very eerie and certainly sets you thinking about the history of the room. Nice work. Looking forward to next weeks

52.3 - Learning. I thought I'd think outside the box a little and needed to steer clear of taking a still life of text books or someone sitting studying (I've not got any flash or lights!!). Anyway, this was the result. It's our kitten learning all about hunting (and playing!) with her toy mouse. I wanted to show the action, hence the slow shutter speed and did the colour pop just to make it obvious what she's got! Couldn't believe how much patience was required, she's like lightening :bang:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3386/3221794510_9640373cee_o.jpg
Love that shot. We have 2 of them and it was havoc went they were both at that stage! :D
That's very well caught. They do move quick at that stage. I like it
I really like that and the slow shutter speed certainly emphasises the speed they move at at that stage. Well done  Great capture.
thanks guys. Typically, it was one of the last ones I got after a long time lying on various parts of the lounge floor. Patience really is a virtue. She really is bonkers and I've got my fingers crossed that she'll calm down soon, I'm sick of her jumping on my head at 3 am!!

Brilliant capture, the sense of movement really works for me here and for once I think the spot colouring works well. It's a pitty you don't have flash as I think a spot of rear sync flash would have made the face (which looks to be full of concentration) really stand out.
Great pic
thank you. I've said to the wife this is just another example of why I have to get a flash. She still doesn't appear convinced... Hope I haven't peaked too early in my 52!
well thought out shot Dizzy :D
Cheers! I'm looking forward to getting out of work at a sensible hour today so I can catch up on everyone elses shots for this week. I've been on 12 hour days leaving the house before 5am all this week so not really had a chance for Internet and the iPhone doesn't get 3g out here in the desert! Stupid army!!

How did I end up with my reply inside your quote???

There's always lots of patience required with animals, as its very difficult (impossible even) to make them do what you want.
A nice, different take on the theme. And I'm sure it was particuarly difficult catching the movement without it going too far with the speed that kittens move at.
:lol::lol: I could sit and watch kittens and cats play for hours, so entertaining.

It certainly was! There was one that was much closer to what I wanted compositionally but it just had way too much movement. Funnily enough, it was near the start of the session when she was still full of energy! It's on my flickr if you want to see. Could post it in here when I get home if anyone wants to see? And yet another fresh interpretation :D
Thanks guys! It's getting very hard to keep up with everyones 52 isn't it!
Very nice, and I don't particularly like cats.
When i was told this weeks theme my initial reaction was, bugger. After a day or so of feeling clueless the ideas began to flow. Thankfully! Unfortunately, most of my ideas would have needed flash or studio lights that I don't have. I enlisted the help of Marcus, our friends little super star and a fun game of peek-a-boo! I new I'd have an issue with noise shooting indoors with bumped up iso, but think it just about escapes in mono. Don't tell anyone, but it was always going to be in mono anyway!!!
So... 52.4 Surprise - Peek-a-boo!!

You assume correctly! That and huge quantities of processed fruit juices. Strange folk!!

They probably only drink the fruit juices because they "think" they're healthy. :cuckoo:
You can be fairly certain that anything you buy from a supermarket has half a bag of sugar added to it! No wonder I've put on over a stone since I got here...
Aah, that could explain my weight gain too. I must have emigrated to America and just haven't realised it yet.

The surprise shot is great, wonderful expression :)
This is a really nice take on the theme and looks great in B&W
Thanks. I think there are a few things that are coming out of this project that are really pleasing.
1. I'm starting to visualize exactly what the shot will be before I even leave the house.
2. It's making me think much about the set up, light and processing but it's much easier as I've a definite picture of what I'm trying to capture.
3. I'm making a conscious effort to use the camera properly. It's getting to the stage where I'm almost totallyin manual now so that's pretty pleasing!
Just hope there's some easier themes on the horizon now...

That is a lovely shot, you've really caught the moment there. That is a really great shot you've got and one that is very wall worthy. Do you have any from the front (from the bear's point of view)?
It looks from your latter post you are really gaining out of this challenge and it's always good to do what you are doing and pre-visualise the image and aim to get it. However, be careful that you keep your mind open to things that may flow from your original idea. The fact you are thinking about your settings will always help

What a great expression you've captured on Marcus's face. The B&W conversion really sets it off.:clap:
This challenge is having exactly the same effect on my life too and causing me to do this :bang: sometimes too. Great interpretation of the theme.
thanks Bruja. I've had a shocking week with leaving the house before 5am and not getting back until 4-5pm on a 7 day stint and the creative juices were not flowing what so ever!! I did have a few ideas on the way home today for this weeks, so hopefully I'll get it sorted tomorrow or saturday. I hope...
I'm in a quandry. I had four images in mind for this week. One is very dangerous in respect to leaving me in an area where I'm likely to be looking at the wrong end of a gun barrel or a knife if someone notices me with an expensive camera. The second requires studio lights or a flash that I don't have. The third I think I may have in the camera, but I haven't put them on the pc to see yet. Fourth has been done in a similar, but not identical way by a fellow 52er. Question is, should I go for my third favourite idea or go for something else??
jeangenie

Go for the one you will enjoy most. Definitely nothing that involves the wrong end of guns or the pointy ends of knives. Good luck. :)

52.5 - Opposites. Well, I had quite a few ideas for this weeks theme and I'd still like to do some of the others but times been against me this week. I wanted to think a little laterally this week and enlisted the help of a couple of guys from my Section to be opposite sides of the argument! I would have liked a few more shots but we have been maxed out this week so this was literally 60 seconds in the howling, bone chilling, wind before we had to get back to the grindstone.

I love the action and drama and agree that it has a photojournalistic feel.
I think the black and white was a good choice as well.
many thanks guys. It's made me feel better about not being able to get the other shots. You never know, they might fit another weeks theme at some point!!
Nice image and it doesn't look posed which gives it a great atmosphere.
thanks, the posing only involved me explaining exactly what a was after and I then shot away while they went at it! I had to keep stopping them as they looked like they were getting a little too involved!!
excellent idea, well executed.
One slight thing i do wonder if it needs a little more contrast to really give it some punch :)
I think you may be right. I uploaded it once but then decided the skin tones were too dark. I did a quick fix and replaced it but think I should have put a little more contrast in to maintain the look I'd originally got. Might have a quick look at that, ta!

Well I don't think I can add anything, I love the gritty feel which is fully supported by the B&W conversion and the realism is impressive. I especially like the slight motion blur to the taller chaps head and the way it breaks the framing rule (the top of the head is chopped off), I think both of these is what is really helping make the image appear so real
Looking forward to this week's shot.

Well... This week's theme made me want to go and find somewhere that was doing a closing down sale (special deals) or a nice chalk board outside a restaurant for dish of the day. However, it had to be a personal portrait in the end. So here we have a portrait of Hollie! The kids are the most special things in our lives so it fits the bill for me. She's a free spirit and likes to dress how she wants and doesn't care if people like it or not. When I saw her walking down a corridor in bare feet, I had to get the shot! A very special girl, a light in our lives, Our Hollie.

Would have liked to see just a tad more detail in the toes to lift it a bit more, but all the same great take on the weeks theme...
Nicely done, agree about details in the feet though.
thanks, I'll have a look at it again. She has very pale skin and the corridor lighting was directly above so I'm not too hopeful!

This fits the theme really well - I'm sure all our kids are top of our 'Special' list. :)
I like the idea of just taking her feet - it leaves me wondering, and wanting to see her face - very intriguing.
I agree with the comments about detail in her toes but I do like the mono treatment. :)
Jean
Well I did like the look before, but do agree that there needed to be more detail in the toes! I've redone the conversion, better?

So many specials :) and mostly personal :)
Well interpreted!
I too prefer the second, good interpretation and it fits well.
Love the B&W conversion on the second one
Such a lovely interpretation of the theme. I'm amazed at how many diiferent ideas we all come up with.
As for Hollie's picture it makes me just want to nuzzle her feet
Well done David
Lovely photo there, I prefer the edit, makes it a bit more 3 dimensional for me
Thanks! This weeks is proving to be quite a challenge. I had a couple of ideas in mind straight away but the first attempt yesterday went very badly!!
52.7 Crowds. Now there were quite a few ideas that came to mind the moment I found out what this weeks theme was. This one was one of the ones at the forefront! It took a while to find somewhere that was going to work location wise and then I quickly found that it was only going to work at night without a bucket load of ND filters! Anyway, after lots of entries in to the recycle bin here's this weeks, alone in the crowd.

Well another excellent shot from you again this week...the movement doe's make you focus on the 2 opposites of the shot...the guy to the right and the couple to the left looking at a mobile or something.
But the the fact you got it in mono make it all the better for me...

Love this with the motion and the several figures standing still. Mono works well for this too - its funny that I found mono worked better for my crowds photo too. Excellent :)

I really like the motion and the mono treatment of your crowds shot - the only thing is I'm finding the big light (or whtever it is) hanging from the ceiling top left a bit distracting. I'm not sure you could sensible crop it out though as you'd lose the top of the arches and tree... thats a niggle though, overall I think it's a good shot

The contrast between the dark, gohstly figures and the bright lights in the background are very eye-catching. The man on the right stands out as the 'face in the crowd' and everything has come together in a very pleasing way. Yes, I'd definitely say you've pulled it off.:clap:
Jean
I reckon so too, good shot, well taken, and it works very well indeed

Thanks, I captured this on freemont street, vegas. I really wanted the golden nugget to be the backdrop as I thought the external lights would work. I tried lots of angles and some with 70-200 on to isolate just one arch but nothing worked as well as the wider angle so I was stuck with the huge PA speakers they use for the freemont experience!

So be honest, how many attempts? ;)
Well, just had a quick look at LR and I shot 55, narrowed that down to 21 in smart collection then chose this one out of around 5-6! I think the biggest problem was that I had the camera on 2 sec timer as a forgot the cable release. It was lots of patience waiting for enough people with someone standing still and hoping they'd still be there in 2 sec!
Forgot to say, it's not counting the other locations I tried out last week that didn't work out!!

Well all your work paid off - a great crowd shot full of action and with the contrasting stillness. Well done.
I love this crowd shot: the mono treatment, the venue, the face in the crowd, and the way your eye is drawn into him on a diagonal. So a great composition that works really well :clap:
Lots of movement - i like the one guy standing still really makes add context.
52.8 Wealth. This was not my favourite week's theme so far! It's been a harsh week, back on 4am alarm calls and slowly recovering from being ill. The creative juices seemed to have dried up. As I wanted to break from my normal 'style' I'd borrowed flash and set up a shot using a monopoly board. Unfortunately, just as I was about to submit it I noticed that an almost identical shot had already been captured by one of my fellow 52'ers (excellent job too, Dark Star). Bugger, I thought. So, with flash no longer available I thought I'd still go out of my comfort zone on a 'set up shot' but more of my style in it! It seemed only proper that with a theme of wealth it should have links to Vegas life, so here we have 52.8 - The Big Win!

Thankyou both for your comments. I am kicking myself as I remember sitting down thinking of the best way to ensure off table distractions were removed and then completely forgot to sort it in this shot! In the immortal words of homer Simpson, Doh!!
Very good interpretation. It always amazes me that 50% of us think outside the box with interpretation, and the other half come up with similar ideas....don't ask me which half I fall into though ;)

Original and perhaps even more about wealth than my "out-of-the-waddingtons-box" shot :)

thanks on both Simon. The colour and lights of vegas usually only come to life when you sit back from the strip and look as a whole! I've got some, somewhere of the Fremont Street experience where the whole roof is a giant movie screen. I did try some from a higher angle but didn't have the same impact unfortunately.

52.9 - Identity. Well, two ideas sprung to mind immediately when I got this weeks theme. The one I really wanted to do was concentrating on a portrait of someone showing what makes them, them. I was thinking back to my days as an elite cyclist and all those hours out on the road, times in the garage with sweat pouring off me on a turbo trainer and how much our lives were dominated by racing. If I was still back in the UK this would have been perfect as I could have grabbed loads of old team mates. Unfortunately, I'm not racing out here and time was against me to find anyone that raced to that level. So... Plan B, I thought about the dark side of identity and the global phenomenon of identity theft. In my mind I had a dark grainy image of someone going through a dustbin searching for personal documents. Thanks to our youngest, Jack, a torch and some of our bills, here we have 52.9 - how safe is yours?

Well, I got identity in the bag quite early and thought I'd have another stab at reflection too. Still wasn't what I wanted for this shot. Really wanted reflection to be using either Trump, Treasure Island, Mirage, etc, from the west side of town with the reflection of the sun setting in the hotel. Unfortunately, still havent found a location where I can shoot that from! I was going to post a mono version, but my dear lady convinced me it really should be colour (I think I may need to go for a lie down now), so here's 52.1.2, Reflection Re-loaded.

I like it, just a small nit pick a tighter crop to remove the small bit of blue sky.
But nice to see a colour shot from you...
Thanks! I did try a bit of a crop at the top for that very reason. Unfortunately, it left the sign much too close to the top of the shot for my liking. I think the best bet would have been to extend the background building in PS. Couldn't remember how to do it though and time was against me! A less obvious part of reflection in the image is that you can see reflection of the Wynn in the window and the background building is the Encore - the follow up wynn hotel that looks like a reflection of the first hotel!

52.10 - Wisdom. Now then... This has been a tough week for me and I thought that Sunday would be my only chance to work on my 52. As it turned out, I managed to get an hour on saturday afternoon and that was it! Following help from you guys and the mighty Google I had time to get 4 shots. Two were from a pedestrian crossing going across one of the local crossings - the theory being, it's a 6 lane road and people drive like lunatics on this stretch so I had someone pressing the button to cross properly was definitely showing wisdom!! But, I really couldn't make my mind up if it worked for me. So, I went to google and discovered that a short drive away is Our Lady of Widom, Byzantine Church. I hopped down there (not literally, that would just be silly) and loved the colour in the roof tiles and the building. There was also an amazing icon that I shot. I loved the shot, but most people don't seem to agree with me!! Initially, I felt like I'd cheated somewhat by using the church just because of the name but then I thought that the church has been associated with wisdom for centuries so here it is, 52.10 Our Lady of Wisdom

IF you ask me religion in any from is supposed to hand down wisdom so i don't think it cheating at all :)

Jean
That been done very nicely Sir...
Your getting to be quite the colour photographer...
No but seriously that a lovely shot and a great interpretation...
Thanks, Marcus! Believe it or not, I have done colour stuff before we started this 52 business, I'm just in a much happier place when it's black and white!!
2nd reflection -lovely rich colours and great lines!
And the wisdom shot! Fantastic! That wouldn't look out of place on a Santorini calandar!
Great colour, great shot, great interpretation!!!
haven't got a greek keyboard, but in an anglicized form - efharisto poli o filo mou!
What a fantastic capture and spot on for the theme. As you said, you chose it for it's name, but what it represents to many people is the wisdom of it's teachings. I really, really like it :clap:
Thanks! I'm definitely feeling much better about it now :D
I agree with all the people who beat me to it. :)
I also thought about a church, but more in the context of trying to find a suitable inscription on a gravestone. But this is terrific. The church and the name were just made for this week's theme. :)

Thank you Jean. I have to be honest that as soon as I saw the place I knew it was going to have to be colour. Perhaps that was why I was feeling guilty about this week - I hadn't got a black and white shot that was better than a colour one...

Yep works for me, the colours and composition are spot on.
I've had two ideas for this week, one slightly out of the box, both should work in mono and it's only thursday. I'd better go and lie on the sofa with a large glass of wine... You watch them both go to you know what now!!!
are we allowed to put two images up?? I've gone with the first idea I had and have 2 shots that I've selected from it. The trouble is, I can't decide which one to go for!! I have a definite favourite, but the long haired general thinks I should go with the other... Could I put both and then I'll keep the one people favour and remove the other?
