I'm worried, and i havn't even started yet. Difficult week time wise. Lots of ideas, but................
Anyway here we go, Reflections. Taken on the River Lee when the ice was starting to break away from the banks. Little bit of flare in the top LH , but I coudn't wait for the sun to weaken

I second that! What's a bit of flare between friends. I love the composition and if you had more time you could have tried cloning out the flare. But, at a challenge a week I know I'm going to struggle to balance creativity with technical merit . It's a lot to take on.

History here we come

From a fellow 52er, good luck

Nice shot - and well done for braving the cold this week.

Look forward to your History shot. I think we'll all have weeks when there's no time, very little inspiration and a 'well, that'll just hve to do' approach to beat the deadline. Best of luck. :)

Good start, yes the flare distracts but it's almost impossible to avoid flare when the light source is included in the frame especially when using zoom lenses, consumer zooms doubly so.

There are so many different ways of hitting a theme and seeing what people come up with in a short time frame is what I'm enjoying about this challenge.

The main thing I suppose is have you learned something from this week?

Er...........no, ;)

I'm probably going to get slated or possibly shot or even expelled from this forum for posting this. my interpretation of History - the demise of the film camera, now a part of history. Now, where is that tin helmet??

Could not decide which to post , so I will let you make the decision.

Really great idea, the cameras you've chosen are certainly historic but I think if you are saying film is now history you will need your tin hat

I like the compostion of the shot and I think it works and I prefer one of the images over the other, but I don't think that my view is important here. Rather than asking us which we prefer, which do you prefer and why?

I'm kind of leaning towards the colour version, seems to have a bit more punch

Great idea and execution.

I much prefer the colour version as the colours seems to provide more separation whereas the mono version looks a bit flat/compressed tonal wise for me.

Like you I half expected you to be on a bit of thin ice putting film and history together, however no missiles have passed me heading for Cork yet:lol:

SimonTALM

Glad you said which your favorite was and I'm glad you posted both as whilst I agree that the colour one has more punch, I personally prefer the B&W. My reason is that I think it helps put accross the idea of History better due to the sepia cliche. I think it works even better in B&W (sepia) because the more modern film compact almost hides in the frame and you have to look at it a bit more to notice it. But what do I know?

Good shot. Do you have any thoughts about the theme you'd like off the list for next week?

Struggled this week with being away on business, but my daughter came to the rescue when she said she had attempted to teach her Grandad how to play solitaire on the computer. That had to be the picture, which I recreated this afternoon using natural light only. So, enjoy, my Father in Law, Dan who is a sprightly 91 year old and not too old to learn.

Great B&W conversion and great lighting making a brilliant portrait of the man  I almost feel I know him just by looking at the image

Did you think about (or infact shoot) putting a little reflected light (using a reflector, white paper etc) on the left side of the face to lift the shadow slightly in the eye and balance up the face. Not sure if it would improve or ruin the shot  though.

Very little inspiration this week....Nay, no bloody inspiration this week!! Anyway, i needed to get a picture in for week 4 and I did a variation on the excellent photograph by DarkStar. Not happy with the picture at all though. tried using 2 flashes at 45 degrees, but could not get the lighting right. Think I need a lightbox??

Good interpretation - that would be a suprise

I can't work out if the angle of the lid is playing trick on my mind or if the tin is not straight. If it isn't then that will help - what is it you don't like about the lighting?

corky
01-02-2009, 22:36
I think there are too many harsh shadows round the crispies
J
ps The tin is straight, I think it is an illusion ;)

Dark Star
01-02-2009, 22:46
I think a light tent/box would help control the lighting Jon - all my foodie stuff is done in the lightbox - the shadows in this case add some depth and define the crispies :D and the light looks evenly balanced overall

Good idea - I had toyed with surprises in cans but went for an easier option so well done on that :D

And where did the fruit go ;)

That's a good Snap: it Crackles with surprise and the colours on the tin Pop.

:exit: :runaway:

Lighting this type of shot isn't easy without a light tent. I've tried to use natural light from a window, but if you have to do this in the evening this ain't much of an option in January! The light on the right seems a bit too powerful - could you have just moved it a little further away from the can?

Any way, a good 'Surprise' and you could have joined Dark Star for breakfast - your fruit and cereal and his eggs and beans. :D

I really must start commenting earlier in these threads - I never have anything new to add!

Oh well, I'll just say that I agree that the lighting could be improved but as I struggle with this myself so I feel your pain. I'm also in the market for a light box / cube malarky and also some of these daylight bulbs I keep hearing about - I'm hoping they work as well as people say they do!

Corky - I'm so sorry. I hope I haven't upset you. :'( I just made the (not very clever) connection between 'crispies' and 'snap, crackle and pop'.

I think you did a really good job and, as I said in my earlier post, lighting ain't easy. You had obviously beaten me to the thought of moving the light further away, so softening it a little was all you could do.

A big part of doing this 52 for me is taking an interest in other 52ers' pictures and thinking about how they arrived at their shot. My comments are in no way a criticism - just me thinking aloud. I look forward to seeing your Week 5.

I'm a massive Rugby fan. Brian O'Driscoll is IMO Special. One of the best Rugby players all round. Shame he plays for Leinster and not Munster, but at least we have him for Team Ireland!!

Not taken by me, but another special moment taken last week, with me holding the most famous trophy in world rugby, the Heineken Cup (which Munster seem to keep winning...funny that!)

Took this at the Dublin boat show on Friday....The guy highlighted had the well worn face of a long term seafarer. Unfortunately, he was also a little light on the thatch, which did not help with the desaturation. Anyway i've named this "The face in the Crowd".

Was the shot so bad that you needed to desaturation it but keep the man in colour?
Can't help thinking it would be better all in mono...I would like to see that if possible...

Nenagh
22-02-2009, 12:42
Your putting a lot of thought into this again. Well done

I like the way the subject is isolated by being in colour. It is always difficult to mask hair 100% and this is where the shot is slightly let down, however I still do prefer it to the original.

For me, I wish the shot was isolated around the three central characters more as the two either side of the foreground are too prominent and so out of focus they cause too much of a distraction. It's almost like two pictures in one.

adrury
22-02-2009, 17:09
I really like the effect of your original idea, but agree that the hair isn't quite right.

I also think having the three central characters in colour whilst the rest is in B&W would make a great shot too.

Well done, good take on the theme.:clap::clap:

jeangenie
22-02-2009, 21:23
This is a really interesting shot. I don't think the full colour one does it justice, (the background becomes too distracting), but on the other hand the colour in the selective colour version is a tad oversaturated.

The 2 sets of people at either side lead the eye to the central character, and the fact that he's the only one facing forward is very powerful. I think I'd like to see him a little less saturated (and the hair wouldn't be such a problem then) or a contrast boost and full black and white.

Well done for spotting such an interesting and well-formed group.:clap:

the colour popped version really makes him stand out, but the hair is a bit odd, and maybe reducing the saturation would make it look less weird. I've read the other comments with interest and hadn't realised the strengths of it, until I did, although I do really like it.

Hi Jon, just catching up :D

Agree with all the comments on the Relationship shot, a spontaneous capture doesn't always let you get the 'whole' picture - as can be seen in my Poverty shot :(, but it's a powerful image nonetheless.

Poverty - doesn't work as homeless but does work as extremely poor. Who would choose to live in those conditions? I really like the mono conversion and the backlighting provided by the sky :clap:

I can't see a door on the side so I wonder if they've joined in the middle, or just parked that wau so no-one can get in? Certainly got me thinking and that's what it's all about

Poverty - I like how you have made this relevant. I see a lot of travellers in their caravans around my home town and it is certainly a lifestyle I see as poverty. Black & white treatment works well and you've captured the shabby appearance of the caravans perfectly.

Up - Not sure about the foreground, I'd have been tempted to crop and just have the aircraft against the dramatic sky.

Bruja

This is a really punchy shot and I think it would look odd without the foreground. It's also a well captured/processed sky. The only slight niggle for me is the horizon isn't straight. WEEK 16 - Longing

I seem to be getting bogged down with other projects and work at the moment to be able to give time to this particular project.....BUT, We''ll keep trying. About 3 weeks ago (22 days,11 hours,37mins and 5 seconds....but hey, who's counting!), I gave up the dreaded weed after a customer of mine was rushed into hospital with a very severe stroke, and He, like me smoked heavily. I threw the ciggies out the car window, went to the Pharmacy and bought 200 industrial strength Nicotin patches. A few days later, I rang his Son for an update to be told he was out driving a delivery van!! He came through it with only a slight hand tremor.........And I gave up my beloved cigs for him! As I told him eventually, he could have done the decent thing and stayed "sick" for a bit longer to justify my pain. ......I will get even.

BTW, these nico patches give you some weird and wonderful dreams. I'm off the patches now and doing well. No Cigarettes were harmed during this shoot. The owner removed them to a place of safety!!

I have been off since New Year's day, Its a long tough road but gets slightly easier every step till you no longer think about them.

A strong pic, really looking for somthing to crit. I might have had a reflector(tinfoil?) at the left to kick back in some light and lift the shadow.

Very well done on the pic and the quitting.

Well done for finding the time to get this shot done. Well done for quitting, and well done on a good shot - I like the composition, the colours and the location!

I've never had to go through this particular pain - I've never smoked - but it must be really hard going and to be close enough to the cigs, handling them, arranging them etc must have been hard. You deserve a medal. :D

Gave up 16 years ago now and although I would never go back to it, I do feel your pain.

The shot itself is fab, The colouring is excellent as is the clarity. well done

Yep I remember that feeling giving up the weed, I stopped 20 years ago and still remember not know what to do with myself after eating...:shake:

But it's all worth it in the end...

Longing - very poignant shot, I am glad I never really got started, although after 15 years I still feel like lighting up occasionally (usually linked with too much alcohol).

Dark - certainly fits the theme of the week although to me this is just underexposed rather than dark sorry  I think perhaps a panoramic type crop across the middle of the shot might improve it.

I like the shot very much, too. It's well composed and I love the play of lights on the water, and the patterns created by the masts of the boats moored in the harbour. Beautiful, trnquil evening scene and fits the bill very wel indeed.:clap:

I agree completely with Jean.:clap: I think it needs a little sharpening though, although that might spoil the impressionist type quality of the image.

I like the dark shot but its a little underexposed as said, might have been better to wait till it was a little darker (so the light was more even) and using a longer exposure.

I went to the local primary school for inspiration on this one expecting to get some kind of simple drawing that they put up in the window. They did one better for me by having a window full of simple skeletons. This is shot through glass. I have tried to disguise the background through pp

Good idea and you have done well with the background, bit of shame you couldnt get a single skellton as the others are a little distracting. Did they know you were there it was the school closed, am not getting arrested will help you creativity :D

Haha, The school was closed and it would not have been a problem anyway as its the village school and everybody knows everybody. I know its a crap shot for all sorts of reasons though. They had these bloody skeletons all over the window and I coudn't get a better composition......ah well maybe next week!

At the risk of sounding boring I've got to agree that the composition is distracting but obviously you have to do your best with what is there. I think you have done well with a difficult subject and it's a nice take on the theme

Nice one Corky, kinda return of the zombie's meets teletubbies :D I realise that when kids stick their work up like this it is obviously because the teacher is very happy with the standard of their work, and space being of the essence they are usually crowded in. The shot as it stands is technically great, and compositionally would work well for a crowd shot. I wonder as the background is as it is if cloning out some of the others would be possible.

anyhoo a nice shot, well done

Well, it's either a feast or a famine with this 52. Not only did I have one picture in the bag by Monday, I had two!! This, by my standards is a massive achievement in itself. I had all week to worry about other problems and not the 52 ;) In celebration of having two shots in the bag, I'm going to post both pics, and to hell with the consequences  I leave it to the 52ers to decide?

Well done Corky, two for the price of one.

For me although both photographs are great, I prefer the second. The railings almost pull me into the picture whereas the danger sign seems to block me! (hope that makes sense)

I also like the contrast between the black and white of the railings against the colours of the background! Super shot.

Picture one would for me work nicely as two shots, one with just the sign in, and one with just the runway heading off into the distance.

Ah you lucky so and so...two to choose from...:p

I'm with Hyster on this one it's the second one for me...it really doe's draw you in. I don't have a problem with the bush because if you crop it out you will lose where the vanishing point is going, but I would like to have seen all the corner of concrete on the first bend...other than that it's spot on for me...excellent...

It certainly is feast time this week, Corky.

The first one fits the theme very well, but I could also see it with a dog sitting in front of the sign 'reading' the message! :D

The second one is excellent. It's a pleasing picture with strong lines and plenty of interest without being overly-busy. Spot on - and I'd definitely keep the bush on the right because I think it balances the left hand point of the railings beautifully. Lots of :clap: for this one.

I hope the 'other problems' of the week got sorted out. :)

True, but I think you'd still be left in that quandry of having the sky spot on and the foreground under exposed or foreground spot on and sky over. I could be wrong of course. The grad filter in LR2 works pretty well, but no help if you don't have that software!!

SimonTALM
20-05-2009, 12:10
Your 52 - your rules so if you want 2 photos then you post 2 photos IMO

I think in both cases they are good shots (I agree about the ND Grad issue) but I think if you were shooting with the theme in mind both could be improved slightly by changing the viewing point and redcuing the amount of sky. E.G for the Landing Strip I would have had to jump the barrier and get the mid line of the runway centre and positioned the vanishing point dead centre but at about 1/4 - 1/3 of the way down the frame.

As they stand I like the 2nd picture more but I think the runway had the greater potential.

Good shots though

This week I happened to be in a town that had an international 8 day cycle race concluding for that day. Got rid of the jacket and tie, on with the backpack and camera, walked past all the marshals etc and stood with all the pro togs 50m beyond the finishing line.....and then nearly got run over by a couple of hundred mad cyclists doing 50mph, who had no thought for my well being at all :( The speed they arrived really caught me out, that and being dragged out of the way by a fellow "pro tog";)
meant I missed my emotion shot of the winner :(. But, All was not lost, theres always one poor bugger at the back struggling to get across the line, and here he is showing the emotion of coming last or completing 180 kms....whatever!!;)

Ps...I know its soft!!
