Have you learned anything from the weeks theme and resulting photos that will help in the future?

Duckydoodle
13-01-2009, 08:55
I had great difficulty lighting and exposing trying get the reflection just the way I wanted it and made things difficult for my self using the plate which restricted me. On the other hand it also also made me work for the shot and I like a challenge. I plan to get some reflective sheets from ebay which make reflective shots a lot easier to capture.
Exposing the rose particularly a red one was a nightmare. In the end I had to underexpose a couple of stops to get what I needed but still ended up with a slightly orange rose. I don't think the spotlight I used helped and I intend to get some daylight bulbs to see if this helps. I was also given some instructions on how to correct the colour on the RAW file. So yes I learned quite a lot and yes this will help for future photographs and processing.

Looking forward to this weeks challenge. Learned a lot about creating an ambience with just small touches to the subject like where you position it, how you light it and using monochrome tones. Really enjoying my 52. Thought having themes would be restricting but find it gives direction and helps you think outside the box. Loving the way there can be so many interpretations of a subject that all work perfectly :)

I had a hard time coming up with ideas I was happy with for this weeks challenge. It's been a tough week personally as I'm struggling to keep motivated in my job. I don't think I've been allowed to develop and grow in it as I would have liked which is ironic since it involves training and helping others develop. My employers have treated me really badly too and I've been left disappointed, frustrated and hurt. The one bright spot in my week has been my children. No matter how low I'm feeling they can lift me with a simple smile or action. My eldest son is studying for his A levels at the moment and I love watching him develop and grow. One of his subjects is English Literature and watching him reading and analysing gave me he idea for this image. He's also studying psychology and for a 16 year old is very insightful and mature and I love sitting and chatting with him about his views on life. Anyway this is one of the books he's studying complete with post it note containing some of his thoughts.

Very good indeed and again great to see yet another interpretation of this weeks theme!

I like the image - well thought out and executed. The narrative adds an extra dimension. I'm sorry work is so disappointing for you - my personal crusade is that people work best when they are valued and allowed to develop and expand their skills/expertise, and I can't understand employers who don't see that. imo, either they have very limited vision, or they are unsure of their own abilities.

Look forward to seeing yur Surprise next week. :)

I love the composition of your shot - the eye really adds something and the notes from your son fit the theme perfectly... the story of the book as actually quite fitting as well

I did English lit and Psychology A-Level too btw, they are great subjects for analysing human behaviour & emotion, but in completely different ways. I think they can't help but encourage you to be more insightful.

I'm sorry work has been a bit rubbish for you - have you spoken to your boss about the lack of development etc?

SimonTALM
25-01-2009, 09:31
Brilliant, as DarkStar said the framing to capture the single eye is really good, and for me the B&W conversion is spot on, just the right level of contrast (I think we see far too many grey & grey conversions). However, the thing that really stands out in this image is that it is a real image and not one that has been staged. The curved edge to the post-it caused by the spine of the book really adds to the image.

If you work isn't fulfilling you at the moment your photography should be as you are producing some stunning work  keep it up next week with SURPRISE

Thank you all for the very positive feedback on this weeks image. It's a real confidence booster and gives me impetus to keep going. Have a few ideas for next week. These themes really push you creatively :)

I'm feeling quite negative about work. I've spoken to my manager several times about the lack of development. It's a really strange situation because I work for an organisation renowned for their training packages but unable to offer me any development. That's not the only thing that's getting me down though. A colleague and myself have been treated really shabbily and let down by a manager who it seems is determined to watch his own back at our expense. I feel really down about the whole thing and want to move on but feel trapped. Think I've moaned enough :(

Good luck everyone with next weeks surprise theme ;)

Made myself go for a walk along the canal today. Pretty bleak out. The sun was shining earlier but it started to cloud over as I left out. Nothing much to see along the route I walked so didn't think I'd find anything to photograph. Was surprised to see the neck of a beer bottle sticking out of the iced over canal and surprised that despite my cold hands I managed to capture this shot. Nothing fancy and a bit on the late side but here's this weeks surprise offering.

Surprise - Nice shot, it's always difficult to get shot when you are cold I always find that I loose the ability to half push the shutter release and find I end up taking a shot when all I want to do is get the exposure. Thanks Simon. I did think about getting closer and lower but I'm afraid it didn't progress passed that. The bottle was too far out in the canal and it was FREEZING. It would have made a better shot I know :(

Both stunning shots Maureen but that portrait of your grandaughter is absolutely lovely

The eye contact, the light and look of total contentment and 'relaxedness' (is that a word) is priceless!

Wonderful!!!!!

Ps I hope your week improves and you can get some 'relaxedness' too :)

cant argue with that, great stuff

John, Angela, Bruja, fabs, Russell and Ruth thank you all so very much. I'm feeling much more positive and relaxed this side of the week. I feel very encouraged by your comments. Portraits are not my strong point but like landscapes it's an area I'd like to improve upon and feel inspired to do some more. My grandaughter loves to pose for the camera so I think I may use her for some more practise :) :) :) :) :) :)

I've got a bit behind on the 52s - so I'm sorry I'm only just catching up!

Your Opposites shot is lovely. I think hands are very expressive and this a lovely shot.

But your Special shot is an absolute corker. Everything - the lighting, her pose, her expression - are spot on. Having such an amazing model does help - but you have caught something extra special here, Maureen.:clap::clap:

Really enjoyed popping into your thread Maureen.
Sad to hear youre unhappy at work, but you know, I always find Im at my most creative in areas I enjoy when Im unfulfilled or feel out of control in other areas of my life.
Dont know if thats the same for you but your creativity is certainly shining through here!

So far I think all your images are fabulous, with the exception of 'Special' which is really .... well soo special!
Tis a shame, (imho) about the white fabric peeping into shot amongst the beautiful tones of her skin ... then again maybe the shot would have been 'too perfect' without.
Either way, you have a beautiful grandaughter, and thats a beautiful shot! I hope its going to be printed large!

Look forward to popping in here again, good luck with the thread ... and with work.

Thanks very much for the words of encouragement Glo much appreciated. Photography does allow me to be creative and takes my mind off the fact that I'm so unhappy in my job you're right. I really would like to leave but in this economic climate it's not that easy besides the fact that I'm not sure what I want to move into :)

Thanks for the lovely feedback on the image of my grandaughter and the rest of the pictures in my 52 it's very encouraging. I am in the process of trying to find someone to produce a nice canvas. I was really pleased with the results of the shoot with my special little model. She's a very big poser and loves being in front of the camera :)

Opposite - I really like this image, especially the DoF, the composition, the lighting are all great. If I had to pick something that is at first invisible but when you notice it is very noticable - the tip of the little finger of your daughter's hand is just a little bit bright.

Special - Great image, with stunning lighting. I like the way the light falls off round the top of the face. Defainly a shot for the wall

P.S. Check out My Canvas Prints (http://www.mycanvasprints.co.uk/Default.aspx) - I was very impressed with the quality they provided me recently.

I pondered on this same point and came to exactly the same conclusion! It must be something in the air. :D

I was so taken with the picture, I forgot to say I hope work improves in some way very soon - sometimes just a small change to a disappointing job can help to cheer you up. :)

I've been doing my present job for 7 years now and it's most definitely time for a change. Unfortunately at the moment I'm unable to do what I'd like and change careers completely. In the current economic climate I suppose I'm lucky to have a job so will have to grit my teeth and bite the bullet for just a little longer.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd155/mausue/Bottles4606BWwebpb.jpg

Apologies for the late posting of my crowd shot. I had something else in mind but couldn't find an opportunity to execute it and didn't want to leave it any longer and get too far behind. Thought about the bottles collecting in my cupboard that I intend to recycle. I must add that this collection of bottles has taken quite a while to build up before you all suggest I go to AA

Things I've learnt:

1. Have a plan in mind and find the time to execute it.
2. Be aware of your surroundings. Reflections of the room behind me were captured and this was not my plan but didn't think about it until I'd processed and decided to post.

I like the processing but am not convinced the compositon is right, i think you need more of the bottles at the front and some space at the top.

I like the way the bottle with the elephant stands out from the crowd and the processing has come out well. Like Toothie said, maybe moving back a little to get space at the top/more bottles might improve the shot?

I like the idea and the treatment. What a shame they're all empty :'(

It's a good take on the theme, and I'm undecided about the tops being cropped off. It suggests a crowded shelf/confined space, imho, but I think the "Stone's" bottle cap is a bit too prominent/sharp, and it draws my eye.

Reflections from glass are a total 'mare and there's not a lot you could do without a light tent, reflectors and three weeks to spare. :D

Thanks for the feedback Ruth. I questioned the composition too but am happy with the B&W conversion. Have a thing about B&W conversions at the moment. Not that happy with this weeks image. Must make a better effort with wealth and identity :)

Thanks very much. I agree there should be more space at the top. Was going for an overcrowded feel by cutting them off but guess it didn't work :)

Its a crowded crowd - like the others I'm not 100% sure about the closeness. But then again it makes the elephant come to life - especially with the nice processing that makes everything look silver and black :)

Missed this Maureen, apologies!

I think it almost works but, as a few above have said, the composition isn't quite there. I'd like to have had either a bit more space or a tighter crop with, perhaps the standout elephant bottle off to one side (or maybe not, perhaps central makes it look like the elephant is charging through the crowd :))

The concept is a good 'un though and I like the processing you've given it :)

Reshoot? :)

Hi Maureen nice to see you back...

I always look forward to your photos, and very rarely do you not come up with the goods...

Yes the bottles need a little change around with less of a crop at the top.

and the bottle top to the left really stands out for the wrong reason for me...it's so plain all the other got some lovely detail on them.

and keep it B&W because I know your reshoot will be brilliant as usual...

I've spent a while considering the theme wealth. I had a lot of ideas and managed to shoot some but wasn't entirely happy. I'm not a material girl and value the important things in life like my family and friends. The most important things in my life are my partner and my children. I decided to take some portraits of my youngest son and use him as my respresentation. My children are my wealth. Money and matierial things pale into insignificance next to my treasures.
