View Full Version : Kelly's 52.09- Wk 6 - Special now included
Well, this was slightly harder than I thought......you know when you have an idea in your head but it doesn't look like that on camera, well welcome to my world.
Here's my effort though for Week 1's theme - Reflection

Not such a bad start Kel. Best of luck with your 52.

Nice one Kelly - on first view I thought it was life size :) I like the absence of scale points :)
I think a bit more reflection would have served you well - but this is about learning and meeting the challenge and having fun :) So who am I to quibble :D
I look forward to your next one :)
I like it Kelly. It's worked well. I agree with John, a bit more reflection of the guitar might have worked even better, but getting it... Ah now... that would have been hard...
How's this one? Better? Not sure if it's against the rules of the challenge to have another go.
Thanks for your comments though. Because of where the mirror is and the angle etc of the wall it's on, it was a very tight angled shot.

Rules? What rules? This is photography, you're supposed to break the rules! :D
Second one does look better BTW.

It's really difficult, isn't it? imo, both shots are good, but you're right the second one does give a better reflection. It looks as though you were standing in the same place for both shots and the new position of the guitar just allowed more of the reflection to show. It's a good point to remember for another time, which is what challenges like this are about. :)
Jean
I definitely prefer the second one Kelly. Well done

Thanks Jean, it was the only place I could stand really because of the positioning of the mirror, walls and doors but yeah, tried to balance the guitar in various different positions to get a better reflection
I really like the second one. :)

I know all about the disapointment when a planned a shot doesn't work. But I think the shot you've got is good. I like the position and reflection of the second one even if I prefer the colour balance of the first, and having just tried some horizontal reflection shots (to be shared tomorrow) I now know how difficult it is to avoid your own reflection.
I've just learned that it's easier to shoot a reflection when approaching it from a high angle

2nd is better for me as well Kelly as it also allows more light onto the body of the guitar :) Good stuff :)
Kelly, another vote for the second

Right, slightly delayed as I've not been the most organised of people this week but here is my History photo. I like this memorial, although the plinth is going a bit green, I think it adds to the character of it:

I like this shot a lot and I agree with you about the patination on the stone, it gives it a more aged look. On personal preference I would have tried to clone out the distracting foliage on both sides of the shot as it detracts slightly from the main subject. Well done for getting out there though

Missed these Kelly like the 2nd guitar best,
History one as Bruja says the little branches are distracting but still a nice image well exposed

Nice shot Kel, agree with the others about the branches but that's an easy cloning excercise.
Thanks Marc
Going to have a play with cloning then. Wanted to get my Week 3 one out of the way :D
Well, seem to have got back on track. This one is two fold as I'm learning how to use my light-tent, processing and table top still life.........took many attempts, couldn't find my rugby boots (they've been retired to somewhere in the loft) so Dan had to clean his for me. Sort of happy with the end result, I know it can improve a lot which is also the reason I'm posting this attempt..... I know my lines round the ball are a bit crap, my skills with the mouse are pap really
be gentle...

Nice and sharp with good colour. Good dof. Compositionally the subjects looked cramped and too tight in the frame. You do need some practise with your processing skills but good interpretation of the theme. Keep at it, these 52's are all about helping us develop as photographers. Looking forward to next weeks shot

I agree with Duckydoodle - it does look a bit cramped. But I see this challenge as a learning experience in itself, and great for getting on and using your light tent and dealing with all the issues around it.
I'm no sort of expert, but when I first started using PS, I found it easier to zoom in to 200% to clone bits out - and still do if it's fiddly.
I like your History shot - it's intrigued me enough to want to know more about it. The statue seems unusual for a WWI memorial?

Many thanks for your comments, yes I agree now looking at it, they do seem cramped but they did fill up the light tent :D Maybe, for that sort of thing, I should have made a home studio type thing, but yes, it is all about learning so this might be one for the reshoot card :D

Thanks for your comments Jean. I have tried googling to find out about the memorial but haven't found anything yet. Although, I will probably see the vicar tonight who has the parish where the memorial is so I will ask him and find out. Glad that the photo triggers off intrigue! Means that I have done a good ish job?:D
A really good History shot, an interesting statue and the colouration on the stone adds to it. I don't normally spot stuff in the edges etc, but I have to agree about the twigs. A good idea for learning, I think it works well. As for the PP, it's damn tricky to get right.

Two nice shots:thumbs: The history shot is great but I found the angle of the horizon distracted me a bit but cure that and you've lost the angle on the shot.
I lthink the 'learning' shot is a nice composition and a good crisp image but as other have said the edges are a bit close. Still very well done!

I know nothing about light tents and have only seen one being used once so yours looks pretty good to me for an early attempt. I suppose once you've been using it a while you'll know which are the best settings etc. Good luck with it.
Thanks staffitaxi. I think it's just a case of reading tutorials on here and the internet and learning - ha ha ha - see what I did there!!

Learning - nice original shot that - good colour too :) Well composed and lit - what light tent are you using I'm thinking of buying one - looks fairly spacious to get that lot in :D

Interesting take on the theme Kelly, I'm glad you've caught up, the light box thing is definately something I need to try at somepoint, however, I'd have to get one first so I think I may take a wander over to that section to have a look.
Thanks Simon, I was talking to a chap last night who makes jewellery and he has said that he will get his photographer to give me some hints :D:D:D:D
Better late than never - surprise. What did learn from this one? Mmmm flowers wilt under spotlights  I actually got these Saturday but was feeling a little under the weather on Sunday and left it too late to get the daylight on Monday so managed to get this done yesterday lunchtime.
Getting flowers is always a nice surprise and these were :D:D:D:D

With blood, sweat and tears and shouting at the computer -. Basically it's a white frame around each pitcure pasted on to a square. Probably not the most technical of ways to do it and I'm sure someone else will have a better way. Thanks for the comments

I love the colours and the multi-image set up of this - its great  What lens did you use?
Oh - if you use photoshop (elements or CS) then you can download a script that will autogenerate a panel for you. I'm not sure whether you can get the white border inside the black background as I havent tested it. But if it doesnt do quite what you want, then pm cowasaki and he will more than likely alter the script to do what you want :).
Anyway - download it from this thread:
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=107056
Version 2.1 is what you want and there is a manual to go with it. The 'panel.js' script is the one that makes a panel :)

Surprise - Love the multi panel treatment of the flowers, I also like the way you've cropped some of the petals off on each one to focus on the form. I would be slightly tempted to flip the some of the images vertically and/or horizontally so they appear as if they are different images.
Opposites - The idea is good and definitely fits the theme. For some reason I don't like looking at it and when I do for a long period it makes me feel a bit sick :cuckoo:. However, I can see that the photo is technically good (apart from the shadows you've already identified) you appear to be getting the hang of that light box .

BLeT Sandwich.. mmmmm...
A little late but I had a great photo of the rugby on Saturday which fitted with the Special theme - Vigo RFC are special to me, I've grown up in that rugby club but then Sunday I felt I needed something to reflect the week that I'd had.
My Grandad was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and Lewy Body Disease over a year ago and sadly passed away last Monday from the Lewy Body Disease - very peacefully and with dignity. My Grandad was always a very proud man and I will miss him dearly as will all our family. So Sunday, I decided that I would be late with my 5209 and leave it until the Mourning Cards had been printed. At our Camera Club tonight, the theme was still life so I decided to give an idea a try, the Mourning Cards were printed today.
Grandad must have been looking down on me and helping here as I pulled off the exact same idea I had in my head.
RIP Grandad, I will never forget you

I too am sorry to hear of your loss (words are useless aren't they ?) you've produced a stunning and moving photo.
I know what you mean about words but thank you very much, I needed to phone my Nan on the Monday and I had no idea what to say. I've had a little weep tonight downloading the photo. I made the Mourning Cards myself and got them printed by a great company down the road, it was very hard. I'm doing the Order of Services this weekend so another hard day to come. But it will get easier and as my friend said at her son's funeral in 2007, grief is like a tiger, you need to cage it but every now and again, you open that cage to let it out.
What a sad thing to happen Kelly. It sounds like you had a great relationship with him and your Mourning card reflects that, and as one of the last things you have been able to do for him, I'm sure it will bring you some comfort.
I love the composition of the picture and think you've got the DoF just about right.
