NIce - tell me you got two mirrors there.
Something about this that messes with my head :-)
Very nice  Good implementation. I'm with Richard about the two mirrors, the Easyvision bottle in the foreground is lying, there's nothing easy about that

Had a few ideas for this one...
But in the end went with the obvious, the most historic building in Gloucester.

I like the mono treatment - fits the subject. It has the look of an old postcard and it took me a while to work out what it was - an absence of yellow lines, traffic and as far as I can see, modern street furniture such as lamp posts and pillar boxes. Well observed.

Superb History shot, as Jean said, nothing modern there at all. That spellings shot is also really good for Learning. Love the DOF you got, that really works well.

Like the history shot. B&W conversion works well and the image fits the theme perfectly. Really like this weeks shot. Great interpretation. Lovely capture. Good dof, nice detail and lovely colours

Damn I missed these :) So in catching up...
The reflection - a nice slice of infinity - meets the brief several times over :)
History - yep that image is steeped in it :) I think a touch more contrast would have improved the image a touch but nice enough :)
Learning - lovely image - super viewpoint and a really great dof that really works for me and hits the subject spot on

This looks like an 'action' shot - not posed for the camera. You can look at her hand and imagine the concentration on her face. Beautiful and spot on for the theme.

all in camera - with the nifty fifty....some slight PP to white-balance and levels no cropping or DoF alterations...darkened the corners slightly (did you notice? lol)
cheers

I agree with the above, perfect DF on the learning shot there. Very good & imaginative.
Did you take a shot where you included all her hand, I can't help noticing the two clipped knuckles (May just be me though)

I wish I got to these threads sooner as I just end up repeating what others have said!
ANYWAY - I like the composition of the History shot but agree that it could do with a bit more contrast. The learning shot is great in that it doesn't actually look posed but you have managed to get the tricky things like DOF spot on
Yet another week 2 I missed :(
It definitely fits the brief and I agree it could do with a little more contrast - but that's why we do this isn't it ;) It would probably look good in sepia too.
And your learning shot, what can I say, great subject, great DoF, great interpretation. Definitely your best yet :clap:
Love week 3 , great DOF :clap::clap:

Yes, definitely. I'm on edge the whole time I'm in the same room as a balloon - even if it's safely hanging up out of reach. And when the grandchildren play with them I'm a nervous wreck. Party poppers are ok, but balloons are waaaaaay too unpredictable for me. :help: :baby:
It's an excellent shot - very simple and effective and fills the brief very well. I like the way the pin is, well, pin sharp, and the balloon is softer.

Great image love the effect of the sharp pin and soft edge of the balloon, I bet you went though a few balloons making this image. Have you tried any other colours of balloon and different positions of the pin (e.g. vertical / horizontal, centre / 3rds etc) to see if this makes a difference to the image?
that is brilliant. Anticipation captured!
 brilliant and fits the theme really well

Took about 12 attempts to get this right....
Method:
1. Ask to borrow the drama dept. at work
2. Tripod, manual focus, 25-30 second exposure in pitch black
3. Engage brain and write backwards using LED torch.
4. 2nd curtain flash (400d in-built) on lowest power setting to capture me
Taa-daa....

And its nice - I like the B&W and the textured graininess! Nice to to see bro and sis getting on well too :)

I think a bigger 'crowd' moving around might have had more visual impact but you can only take whats presented :)

double edged sword really *** the dismal dark grey drizzly day helped get the shutter speed down....yet that meant not many people were wandering around when I had chance to get up high to take the photo...
This is a nice shot. I like the way that my eye is drawn to the one still figure in the middle of all that movement. I don't know whether or not that was intentional but I like it.
I have no idea how you would go about getting a shot like that, but am looking forward to learning.
Well done. :clap::clap:

basically camera on tripod...and aim for around a 1 second exposure.
I basically adjusted f/ and ISO until I achieved that and then waited for some passers by and for the boy in the middle of the shot to look like he was going to stand still for a moment....I took about 12 shots of this scene and this was by far the most interesting...also looked much better in mono...

I'm enjoying your 52 :) - love the opposites - its just fun. And the crowds is excellent - my eye is really drawn to the static person, which is what you wanted I guess. Great view from the rooftops too makes this all the more interesting...
Superb crowds shot. Whilst it wasn't very busy, that may not have been better in this case, and you may have had too much blur around. I think this is just right.
great sence of movement in the crowds shot :)
I like the image a lot, its a very good idea. Blurring the others further might have worked even better but I suppose a lot of luck would be needed ,guy in the middle would have to remain still and I suppose you would have needed an Ngrad to slow the shot down further, just a thought.
I would have been much happier about my weekend if I had caught something like this, well done.
I really like the Crowds shot.
I think the effect is of both movement and stillness, a calmness rather than a sense of bustle
I love the bird's eye view and the monoconversion really works.

I've never tried anything like this, but I would imagine it was difficult to control the reflections from the glass, and all those lights. I like the strong, graphic quality and b&w treatment.:clap:
Jean
nicely captured and well found location. I like the b&w, but then I would say that wouldn't I...
Aaah, a girl can dream! One day :D
I like this shot for many reasons: The clarity of the shot, the black and white (make it feel more unabtainable IYSWIM), The lighting and the angles.
well done :clap::clap::clap::clap:
Excellent. The details, lighting (well done on not getting reflections, or processing them out in the windows), the angle, the B&W, it all adds up to creating a superb image. I agree with Marcus, it does look like a film strip

"Robert Raikes , 1735-1811, English philanthropist. In 1780 he organized a Sunday school , primarily for poor children, who were taught to read and to spell to enable them to read the Bible. The Raikes system spread rapidly through England and he became known as the founder of Sunday schools, although others had been concerned with similar undertakings. Raikes gave his project publicity in the Gloucester Journal, which he had inherited from his father."
Really good idea, and it's an interesting take on the theme. The plinth is spot on, and very legible even with the sun behind it, so I'm guessing flash was used ? I'm also going to guess it didn't quite reach the statue. I keep wanting to see a bit more detail in the statue itself.
Hi Kenny, still catching up after missing three weeks. I really like the relationships shot, it is a lovely capture and who ever said never work with children and animals....
The poverty shot is a lovely clear shot and I like the fact that the figure is a silhouette. There is an annoying little glare from the sun just by the date he died, but that really is a minor niggle on what is a very successful shot!
Well done

I seem to remember (vaguely!) Raikes from teacher training as being a leading figure in promoting education (through Sunday schools) for children who would have started work at 7 or 8 and never had any education. They were undoubtedly extremely poor, deprived children.
I like the shot, but would like the impossible - to see the statue more clearly and well as being able to read the citation. (That's education for you!!!)
Seriously, well done - a great idea and a good shot.
Jean
Love the Relationships shot, very moving and so well captured and the mono conversion really lifts it.:clap::clap:
Poverty - why don't they place statues facing the sun :bang::bang: the amount of times I've wished something was the other way round so that I didn't have to get up at dawn to get it (Not that I would :()
I like the interpretation though.:clap:

Relationships - lovely capture of a lovely moment. There is a quote about cats that goes something like "A cat is there when you call her - if she doesn't have something better to do" - which I think is very true and you are very lucky if a cat thinks the best thing they could be doing is being with you!
Poverty - I agree that it's a shame you can't see more detail in the statue but I like the idea.
Great idea and its very well taken :)

Relationships: Lovely shot - somehow B&W suits it and the sheer joy (and love) on display is evident! Meets the theme brilliantly!
Poverty: Good spin, good shot! Love to have seen more detail in Mr Raikes himself but it still works and is also another bit of education for me :)
Up: Yep that does it! Well caught and really well framed! Timing was great :)

When I saw the theme for week 14, I expected to see lots of red street furniture - letter + box = bingo!
But this is far cuter than I imagined. :)
I love the 'village' feel - a little letter box set in a whitewashed wall would be good enough for me on their own - but the cottage name AND the washing line tells a great story - I think it's terrific. And you found a nice sunny day to capture it.:clap:

Letter - Love it, it would have been a good image with just the post box contrasting against the white wall, but the inclusion of the washing line is an interesting move that I think has worked really well.
Duo - nicely timed shot that is sharp - no mean feat for a moving subject, though it looks like you were blessed with really bright light on the day which helps. The Duo of Black and White also works well

Afraid I agree with Jean on this one - I like the idea but I'm not sure it says what you want it to. Not really sure how you would bring out the longing for snow aspect though... I'm sorry, this really isn't very helpfull C&C is it!

As for Dark... what a tough theme... That's a really bright flare from the match, good timing to have caught it, but tough to expose correctly. Possibly there's a bit too much burnt out, but a good idea and it fits the theme well.

Nicely done.

I've been trying to imagine how you'd expose for this - matches will flare with varying intensities. Not an easy one, imo.
Although it looks a little blown, I don't see how you could avoid it because of the contrast between the flame and the darkness, and I don't think it detracts from the shot. So well done on a really difficult one.:clap:

My first reaction was 'I want to see the eye as well' because eyes are the windows to the soul.
Then I thought about it some more, and just seeing the tear on the cheek makes the viewer think about what emotions are going on here, and raises questions about the subject.
I love the framing and the light. Going back to it yet again, I think I would have turned your willing helper very slightly to the right, rather than stright on to the camera.

I love the idea behind emotion. I wonder if more flat light over the face would have been better though. As it is, a lot of the skin looks a bit underexposed to keep the bright patch looking ok. I'd be interested to see if you have any alternative angles or crops of this. It's a tricky one when nearly any crop you take will slice straight across some facial feature.
Nice work :)

01-06-2009, 20:55
Ooooh I'm torn here - the rigging meets the theme better but I love the way you've caught the sand pirate! The detail on that pirate is so well brought out as well! A liitle too much sculptor though....hmmm ....I call it a draw :)
Both good :D

02-06-2009, 07:43
I'm torm between these two. :)
I didn't immediately clock that the sculpture was sand (doh) so for me it would have been better in colour, and I didn't immediately think 'and there's the sculptor working on it' - it was more 'I wish that person would get out of the way' (another doh!) because I wanted to see the rest of the carving.
The second one respresents a personal 'goal' of mine - to get a really dramatic shot of masts and rigging. It's hard to explain what I've got in mind, but I feel that with a slightly different angle and/or dof on this you'd have got it for me. :) So a thumbs up from me. :D

Hi Jeff, Emotion, certainly a picture that makes you think but it needs something else I feel. Either better lighting or a slightly different pose or maybe try a monoconversion, but a good attempt nonetheless
As for Complex I have to say it's a draw. I love the DoF on the sand sculpture but it would be better without so much of the sculptor. As for the rigging this certainly fits the theme but my eye keeps getting drawn to the missing bit of mast at the top right as it travels up the main mast then across. It's a great eyeline to follow but that missin bit just niggles. I like the monoconversion of both of them though.:thumbs:

Very well spotted. I normally have a bit of an anti crop mantra. More care in capturing the shot at the time blah blah blah, however, on this occasion i think this would be improved by taking out that top line of sills. Just my opinion obviously.

Very well spotted. I normally have a bit of an anti crop mantra. More care in capturing the shot at the time blah blah blah, however, on this occasion i think this would be improved by taking out that top line of sills. Just my opinion obviously.
I'm not anti-crop at all and I agree with what Dizzy said about the sills. I really like the PP you've done on this one, it looks very authentic to me
What a great shot and well spotted. I love the processing and wouldn´t crop it as I think it frames the picture nicely with the sills at the top and the sign at the bottom :clap::clap:

Inspired to sketch...at Westbury Court Gardens, Gloucestershire.
excellent take on the theme and very well done
 I have to agree with Ruth, excellent work
I like that, fits the theme well and tells a story.
Definitely tells a story. Great DoF and composition and certainly fits the theme :clap::clap:

OOh great shot - simple and really to the point! The anonymous nature of the subject adds to the feel of the shot!
Very much like this one :)

Ah the old Spectrum...
Now that's going back a bit...
I like the overall shot with the new oof in the b/g.

ZX Spectrum, eh??? That's going back a bit. But then we've still got a BBC Model B in the loft!
Great interpretation of the theme - computers have developed beyond anybody's imagination in the last 30 years. You've probably stirred up a load of memories for all us 'oldies'. I think I would like to have seen a little more of 'today', but it's still a shot to make us think and smile.
Jean
ah i had a ZX+ ;)
i really like your take on the theme and the use of DoF
My ZX died... Nicely done... I like it.
I like the theme, but the composition doesn't do anything for me...sorry
While I agree the composition lacks a bit, not sure at all what I would have done differently.
Its a great idea though, I haven't seen one of these in years.
Complex:
Love the rigging shot as it meets the theme and has great colour and clarity. I like the sand sculpture because it is in B&W which makes you really look! clever.
Time:
This is a lovely clock, how lucky you are to have it near you, another great capture.
Inspiration: This has lovely dof and again meets the theme. It is probably my favourite in terms of composition of the four weeks I am trying to catch up on!!
Development: Aaaaahhh I remember them well, how soon time has marched on and the tchnological world has developed. Nice thought for the theme.
sorry it has taken this long for me to catch up.

Did nt really feel inspired this week :( so you have this ^^^^^^^^^ better than nowt...
I like this Kenny, a bizarre clash between the Zebra and an English country pile, not a bad shot at all Sir.

damn you spotted the zebras...rubbish camouflage eh?
:D
:D, clever and shows the theme nicely... I'm afraid that comouflage just don't work on lush green grass, so free they might be, but easy to spot too

i agree works really well thought :D
I don´t know what happened to me last wekk but I seem to have missed loads of people out, you included :(
I used to love playing on the Spectrum when i was ´studying´for my finals  and remember a great game where you had to get a frog to jump from tile to tile but can´t remember what it was called :shake:
Good interpretation of the theme but the composition is a bit 'blocky' if that makes sense
As for Freedom, they certainly seem fine wandering around the stately pile, gently grazing. Good choice :clap:

Damm - I knew I was missing a trick this week.
Excellent shot and certainly made me smile.:thumbs:

This is a very odd shot, but it works very well for me. It should feel out of place but so how it works...
I also fits in well for the theme...
The more I look at it the better it gets...
This is yet another technically great shot from you. I love the contrasting colours with the sky, architecture and animals/grass.
The horses are free to roam, and the fact that they look out of place makes me think of the fact that their freedom is limited, only in their natural habitat would they be truely free. I good thought provoking shot, well done.

Bit of a catch up here:
Development: Ah nicely done and given we're all tapping away at these things very apt indeed :) Good shot - simple and to the point
Freedom: As has been said a bizarre juxtaposition - nicely taken and composed
Night: Thats a good un - love the moonlight clouds adding a touch of drama! Nice calming shot and well suited to B&W! Good one :)
