Ive recently heard that if buying a new DSLR you should get a nikon as it reproduces better colour and sharper images, is there any basis to this. (the guy that said this is actualy a canon owner).

Has anyone any first hand experience of a like for like comparison of, say, a 40D and D300 (or equivalent etc)

It depends on the specific bodies you are comparing.

Generally canon gives a slight yellow hue and nikon more of a magenta colour (from memory)

I would say "it depends"

I generally find that Nikon images are sharper (comparing say a D60 to a Canon 40D) - however something like a Canon 5D with its weak AA filter is sharper - at the pixel level - than a D3 or D700.

"Better colour" is really subjective - the only camera that I've ever had that produces better colour (to my taste) is the Fuji S5 Pro.
