thanks fabs, yes sorry I did mean 8GB. I don't know what RAW or JPG are, I do have an idea what megapixels are.
hi fritter,and welcome
basically,RAW files are uncompressed,so you can alter/adjust exposure ect in your RAW converter before converting to JPEG file...great if that once in a lifetime shot is under/over exposed...
JPEG's are files which the camera compresses,ie: makes all the choices for you in camera,so you are unable to adjust exposure, white balance etc...so if that once in a lifetime shot is under/over exposed...then it's generally a delete job.
wow, thanks Stan. you just opened my eyes. I have the manual and camera here now. Its a whole new avenue I hadn't noticed before. Incidentally I don't like this manual seems very poor for a novice like me.

Anything specific you want to know, just ask here. There are a few A300 users around, but I'm sure it's not that different to the other models in terms of use.

don't worry...you'll soon get the hang of it,it's just getting decent shots that's the hard bit ;)
the manual isn't that bad really...i vcan thorougly recommend getting bryan peterson's book "understanding exposure",and gary friedmans book on the A200/300 and 350 are highly recommended also

The understanding exposure book is immense :D
I have bought the digital field guide for my a200 which is really helpful as well as it goes into more detail on what each button on the camera does.

Not quite true;) A raw file can be compressed or un-compressed, A RAW file is basically the data captured by the camera's sensor without any in-camera (or minimal) processing they will usually contain a lot more data than a jpg file and are considerably larger. a D300 will produce both 12 & 14 bit RAW images where as a jpg is normally 8bit.
A JPG image is processed in camera using user definable settings for things like colour, sharpness, saturation etc depending on the camera and is compressed and only usually contains 8-bit data.

thanks paul....you put it much better than i could
I`ve been photographing using jpg + raw lately so that I could get home and then Upload pcs straight away. After a bit of thought though I'm usually editing pictures a little at least before uploading so I am starting to do purely in raw now.

RAW doesn't afaik take advantage fully of DRO though (although I don't know how good/much use DRO is on a A200/A300/A350).
so here we go again....sony alpha thread part 3 :D
And you get your name under the thread title this time! :notworthy: :D
RAW doesn't afaik take advantage fully of DRO though (although I don't know how good/much use DRO is on a A200/A300/A350).
If you use the Sony supplied IDC converter for raw files a certain amount of DRO processing is possible but nowhere near as much as the camera generated jpegs can produce.
A problem is that with DRO active the camera will underexpose so it can protect the highlight end to extract an optimised file. Even taking raw only you will get a dark raw file. BUT the danger is that what you see on the LCD is DRO camera processed - which you will not necessarily be able to replicate when you process the raw file. What you see is NOT what you will get in the raw file.
DRO is best left off when taking only raw.

Strangely I find that not to be the case. I have DRO set to auto and shoot only in RAW, yet I find, if anything, the results are a little over exposed.

OK, had a quick play.
These are both as shot, nothing done at all other than saved as jpegs. Not sure if I can spot any difference if I'm honest.

There's more detail on the owl's face area with DRO on and generally the highlights are down ... but both look overexposed to me anyway.

... and tomorrow morning as well.
There's more detail on the owl's face area with DRO on and generally the highlights are down ... but both look overexposed to me anyway.
Yeah, you could be right about the detail in the face. The pics were taken in aperture priority with no exposure compensation so that's probably why they're both over-exposed, although well within the range to be easily recovered. Really must get myself a light meter. ;)
DRO is best left off when taking only raw.
Strangely I had a go at Jpeg shooting the other month and set the DRO on the A700 to the highest level to check the results. Some images came out very well indeed with great control on the shadow area.
I switched back to RAW and left DRO alone as it was and noticed that the RAWs were coming out more pinky or slightly orange, expecially the skin tones. I was under the impression that DRO didn't alter the RAW image. I turned off the DRO to be safe and got better looking RAW shots after that - back to what they were like before I'd altered the settings.

Depends what you want to put in the cag with it. It'll certainly be big enough for the A300 and a few lenses and probably a few other bits and pieces.

I believe that using DRO sets flags in the RAW file which IDC at default settings automatically cues on.
The problem with DRO is that sometimes it seems to be capable of producing better results than you can get even from RAW & pp but it's very hard to judge under which conditions this will happen ...
I seem to recall David Kilpatrick writing an article or 2 on it.

I have a Slingshot 200 and its fits my a350 nicely along with four lenses, flashgun and chargers.
The Slingshot 100 might be good for the camera and 2 addtional lenses.
I have the slingshot 100 and it fits my a200 perfectly :D Only have the one lens atm but there is room for a decent telephoto in there as well as prime.
There is also room for 4 cf cards inside as well as a section on the top that holds my charger, USB cable and any other bits I have lying around that might be useful.
There is also a screen protector cloth built in which is nice as well as a Weatherproof cover although i havent tried this yet as its tucked away at the bottom and I dont fancy trying to push it back in :D

Cheers for the replies folks, I think I will go for the AW100 just now, aside from my A300, Kit Lens and a CF Card I don't have anything else yet, although I'm going to get some cleaning kit, a second CF card and at least one more lens in the not too distant future.
As long as I have room for my camera, 2-3 lens, my wallet, mobile and iPod it'll do for me for now!

Will it be long enough for motorsports? You may want to look at the Sony 70-300 G lens. Not as fast as the 70-200, but a very good lens with a better reach and less dosh than the Sigma 70-200.

70-400mm G SSM should also be out at the end of the month ~£1100 plus or minus if you need the extra reach.

the sigma fairs quite well in reviews, and will be okay for tracks like mallory, oulton etc, where you are reasonably close to the circuit, but may not have enough reach for tracks like silverstone and brands...

the 70-200 should be fine for motox, get right upto the trackside most times. and for times when needed, mabie get the 1.4x convertor.
i know the tamron isnt rated, but hows the sigma? i was wana stick to the sony lens, but if it cant be done, would the sigma be worth investing in?

Some say the sigma is great value for the money, but I have also noticed quite a few people selling them on so I really don't know to be honest. It may be a case of getting one and then, if you're not happy with it, selling it on and savng the pennies for the Sony G. One of the good things about lenses is the thriving second hand market. If you do get the wrong one, at least you won't lose too much of your investment.
I have been wanting to have a play with this for a while, no where near a technical test.
Found a spare hour this morning and a pack of batteries !!
Overall I am pretty please with the results, the only lens that seems to be slightly
front focusing is the Sigma 70-300 at 90mm, the second 70-300 was taken at about 240mm.
The rest seem OK to me.
All taken at the largest possible aperture and spot auto focused on the middle battery.

Like many before me my alpha was back focusing. I became positive about this when using my 30mm f/1.4 wide open. At closest focus distance it was focusing about 5mm behind. Anyway, i took the bottom sticker off, 1/8th turn clockwise on each of the 3 nuts and bingo! Everything's spot on. Took 5 minutes max. Sony's quality control is shocking!

not a Sony lens that you were using was it though?
You'll find that back/front focussing varies by lens & it's certainly not something unique to Alphas - go to any brand (Canon, Nikon, Pentax etc.) DSLR forum & you'll find mention of it.
if there was 1 perfect adjustment for it why do the bodies that have micro-adjustment have memories for multiple lenses (e.g. Nikon D300 will store 12 settings)?

The sony kit lens, a tamron 55-200 and sigma 30mm all back focused. Obviously the Sigma highlighted the pronlem more. All lenses are now spot on i think. With rehard to my qc comment: my olympus e300 had no issues and none of my canon film slrs did either yet i hear about this all the time now.

front/back focusing wasn't an issue on film slrs.
if you Google " DSLR front focusing" Sony is the 10th hit with Pentax taking up the first few slots followed by Canon, Olympus & Canon again with Nikon appearing shortly afterwards.
If you Google "DSLR back focusing" yes, Sony is the 1st with Nikon 2nd then a mix of Canon & Nikon with the 2nd Sony entry about 18th.
In short as I said it's common across all manufacturers.

They all back focused, now none of them do. All spot on. So, either every lens had an issue or the camera did! Obviously I used the f/1.4 to do the adjustments as that was the most critical.
I didn't realise this was a general problem with DSLRs. Fair enough that Canon, Nikon etc. are just as bad but that doesn't excuse Sony. I'm a bit of a Sony fanboy myself and don't usually have any problems with them.
Anyway, I'm happy now. This system is fantastic. I'll post some shots later.

I'm very glad your problems are resolved now. I think you must have been unlucky ... I guess only the people who have problems bother to post. Such is the way of the internetz. I do have to wonder though how many people moan about the quality of the kit lens when in fact they have focus issues. My kit lens now appears to be much better than I originally gave it credit for!

whilst it's now having it's flaws more easily noticed on 10/12Mp bodies rather than on 6Mp I don't think it's really that bad either (more a case of adequate rather than good) although I'm sure that there is also some sample variation.

Well from what i`ve read all the 70-300 lenses out there get soft above 200 unless u spend 500+ on the ssm one.
I found myself wanting a lot when I was at the zoo lately so the extra 130 mm should give me that extra zoom I need for now :D

I only ever use tend my 70-300 when I need the extra reach, i.e. Airshows etc. I now find day to day that I very rarely need to go above 200mm
Just been on Ebay this morning and Beercans seem to currently be going for 150+.
The tamron lens is 60 quid.
This raises a question for me. is the Beercan really worth the 100 quid more you pay for it? I know build quality is immense but is the actual picture quality going to be that much better than the tamron offering?

MAF lens prices have have risen quite dramatically over the last year or so - I suppose that's testimony to the popularity of Sony dSLRs. The "beercan" in particular has been picked up as a cult lens and the name is banded about by sellers on all sorts of other lenses - "small beercan", "little beercan", "beercan build" and many more.
I've had several "beercans" over the years and, yes, they are a nice lens but they're often over-praised by folk who have never had better lenses. The main attraction is the constant f4 maximum aperture, the quite short close focus distance ... and, of course, that substantial build! However the actual performance is not really that special - it's failings become quite noticeable when used on FF - compared to modern lenses.
Over time I've wasted a lot of cash buying older second-hand lenses to try (usually on web recommendations) - none really lived up to expectations and ended up being resold.
More recently I've (with difficulty) curbed my buying/testing/reselling of older lenses and save up for a new G or Zeiss ... I've only a few lenses now but those I have leave little to be desired :)
A year ago I would have said all Minolta/Sony dSLR owners should try a "beercan" ... but at current prices I'm not so sure.

I bought that Tamron a week ago and think it is excellent, especially at that price.
Well i`ve taken the plunge and ordered the tamron lens :D
Hopefully will be here early next week so will see how it goes.
Just bought an a200 with 18-70 kit lens hoping that I now don't have to roll one trouser leg up etc whilst on the forum! Looking at adding to the lens in the summer with a longer range one but probably can't afford the Sony lenses. Had a quick play very impressed.

I was looking for a Beercan but the prices on Ebay are getting a bit silly, £150+ seems a bit steep.
Would I be as well getting one of the newer Minolta 75-300mm lenses? Its just they seem a lot cheaper, ideally I want to get a zoom lens, a mini beercan and maybe a 50mm prime, but I feel that I could save a lot by buying something other than a beercan for a zoom lens.
Check out the tamron lens here : http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-tamron-lens-55-200mm-f4-0-5-6-di-ii-ld-macro.htm

just got my quarterly copy of Photoworld which includes a brief review of the Tamron 55-200mm - in short "Putting it simply, this little lens is possibly the best tele zoom we have used in the 200mm range. It can be recommended without hesitation as a second lens if you own a camera with the 18-70mm, it even shares the 55mm filter size."

I think that it was £59 the other day so it's creeping up.
Bearing in mind that all the other brands are going up substantially due to exchange rate shifts I'm sure that Tamron will be following so expect prices to stay down only as long as there is existing stock bought in previously.
of course if you have a credit card buy now & pay off your card in 6 weeks or whatever.

No, it doesn't as others (Sigma, Metz etc.) make Minolta/Sony dedicated versions too.

Mine is an older model, built in the mid 90's. Built like a tank and I don't think if suffers from the same problems as the newer ones. Also was built for FF 35mm cameras.
I am very pleased with it, managed to pick it up off Ebay last spring for £46.

Anyone had a go of the A900 yet? I don't intend to upgrade to one as the ISO still seems to be an issue that needs sorting. Apart from that, what do you think of the machine in general, I know most of the magazine reviews seem to give it about 8/10 but still say that it's not as good as it could have been.

On the other hand many working photographers seem to rate it highly for what it is at least for landscape etc. usage upto ~800ISO e.g. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/quality-vs-value.shtml.

I've had the A900 for a month after using the A700 for 6 months. The magazine reviews don't do it justice. It's a far better camera than it gets credit for. Check out the real world reviews from sites like Luminous Landscapes http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/A900-Second-Opinion.shtml
The image quality is astounding. The only thing I have against it is that I had to upgrade my glass to get the full benefit (another £2,500 gone) but the results using Zeiss and G glass are well worth the expenditure.
I regularly shoot at ISO800 and at 25% print size you cannot see any noise. At ISO1600 you can see a bit of noise but you REALLY have to be looking for it. Nothing Neat Image or Noise Ninja won't cure.
I'm confident Sony will get the 'noise issue' sorted with a firmware release, as they did with the A700 V4 firmware.

I too read all the reviews I could find on the a900. I was a little hesitant because of some of the reports but bought one anyway. Despite the plethora of reports on any camera the only way to really know is to own one. It is a great camera and does all and more than I need to the point where I was no longer using the a700 so sold it.

Cheers Stan, looks good!
Good to see some users on here with experience of the A900. I'm sure it is a great machine but when the magazines always compare against the likes of the D3 and 1Ds MK III etc etc then they will (nearly) always favour the main two makes.
heidfirst
04-02-2009, 22:20
but the D3 & the IDs MkIII aren't really the A900s intended targets - the 5DMkII is probably the closest & if Nikon bring out (as rumoured) a D700X with the same sensor so would that be.
What I've taken from all the reviews is that they are all slightly differenly focused & all have their strengths & weaknesses & you choose what suits your needs best. It's been very interesting to see quite a few pros being willing to go multi-system to exploit this.

I think that's one of the good things about the 50mm. It doesn't cost that much and if you don't like it you can always sell it on and get most of your money back (Or the way the Minolta is going, even make a profit!)

... that's what I did ... 4 times :) tried all the versions (and duplicates) from a new Sony f1.4 to Minolta f1.7 but they' were all soft until stopped down a bit which, to me, defeats the purpose of a fast lens. Might as well get a f2.8 macro version which is sharp wide open.

I find the f1.4 excellent for low light street photography and have often used it wide open. Guess it doesn't really have to be super sharp for that although it does me fine.

Hmmm, I notice that the f1.4 shots in that review were shot at an angle. Not really sure if that is a completely fair test at that aperture.
I guess that was done to better illustrate the limited depth of field of a lens at f1.4

I bought one of those £299 kits from Jessops last year. Ok, it isn't the best - hence the low price - but it is a start. Having never used a lighting set before, it took me a bit of time to get used to the settings that I needed on the A700 to get the right exposure.
My 'want' list includes a longer lens, 400mm or more and one that's good quality. Although I may have to save for this for a while yet.

cool thats all I want a cheap kit to start me off want one with background stands and background works out cheaper and easier for setting up round other peoples houses.
Here's a tip, if you get a lighting set, also make sure you pack an extension lead in your bag if you take the kit out to someone's house for a shoot. You need to make sure that you have power.... The lights will flash a few times if they've been charged, but you can't rely on them to last very long so take a long power lead with you.

http://www.collegecameras.co.uk/Products.asp?PrdID=373&Name=Tamron-55-200mm-f/4-5.6-AF-Di-II-Macro
I got mine from collegecameras and they where really quick with delivery.
The reviews on Dyxum all say that except for build quality the tamron is as good if not better as a lens. For 100+ quid less I can handle the plasticness of the lens :D
Im actually thinking of new lens, would love to get some good glass, probably some Zeiss but can`t decide which one. I havent tryied portrait yet but would love to but also many times im in situation i would use some wide angle lens and on the top of this really want to buy some fixed focal lenght lens. Any suggestions :D
BTW few times caught myself thinking if its worth to buy good lens for sony or just sell it and buy nikon  . Love the way how Nikon pics looks.
All alpha users are probably now gonna kill me  hm? Although i love liveview on my a350 and really think i`d missed that.

First time poster - long time lurker!
I'm thinking of selling on my beercan and getting the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8.
I love my minolta 50mm f1.7 its great for portraits, especially with a 4 year old who cant keep still. On my A100 its comparible to have the much more expensive 70mm prime. Will probably only reconsider after the lottery win where I can afford full frame and all the G-glass to go with it

have you tried microglobe in london?
just checked, and they apparently have them in stock...

the only problem is,they are grey imports,so don't get the sigma UK 3yr warranty.you do get the 1yr standard warranty though....

Hi all, I have a quick Sony related question. Ive won a Minolta beercan on ebay, does anyone know what kind of uv filter i'll need to buy for it? Will the same sort I got for my kit lens fit or do I need another sort? Sorry if its a daft question, but I want to protect the beercan's lens as soon as it arrives!

Both have 55mm threads so you would be OK. Not actually sure if a UV filter does the same job on digital as they did on film cameras. Most people just use UV or skylight filters for protection, if that is what you want then you would be better off with 2 filters and leave them on all the time.

Filters are not always a good thing - hoods and caps can offer more "protection" - filters can increase flare and degrade the image.
Before spending money have a read through this ...

Yeah it's Minolta, but MD was the mount before the A fit so you would need an adapter to be able to fit it to a Sony camera. Not sure how available the adapters are and how much they are so couldn't really tell you whether to go for it or not.

up until very recently Wilkinson Cameras was doing the genuine Sony for £25 but they've gone back up now.
Picstop (who I have used for other things with no problems) have an equivalent http://www.picstop.co.uk/Digital-Camera-Battery/Sony-NP-FM500H-Digital-Camera-Battery---Equivalent? for £30.
It's probably the same as you would get from eBay cheaper but if you want the security of buying from a known UK supplier...
