I´m currently using my Nikon D60 with a 18-200mm lens which of course is pretty heavy.
Is there any chance of getting a lens with just 18mm and nothing else? And would it make sense? I´d like to get deeper into streetphotography and will need to hide my camera as best as I can. With my large and heavy lens this is quite impossible.
Or are there other ways you could recommend?

thanks
Marc

There's a 14mm f/2.8 Nikon prime (fixed focal length) but it's an AF-D lens so won't autofocus on your D60. However, with a prime that short, you should be able to get away with pre-focussing and relying on a smallish aperture to get enough depth of field. You could also consider one of the 18-55 kit lenses which are considerably smaller than your 18-200.

Hi Marc

If you've got plenty of cash then yes, the 18mm prime can be had. I would say it's a bit too wide for street photography though, unless you're going to get right in peoples' faces (not recommended) and that would negate your efforts to "hide" the lens. I would say a nifty fifty would be an ideal starting point, being nice and small in size and a hell of a lot cheaper. Then, once you get a little more confidence you may want to get yourself a 28mm or 35mm prime.

If you are wanting to take more candid street shots, I would say you want to be a little detached from the subjects. Are you sure you shouldn't be looking more in the 85-200 range?
As said, the 50mm is a great sharp and cheap lens, but you still need to be withing 10ft of someone to get a face shot, but will give you good BG separation for sure.

Thanks for the replies.
Another question came up my mind. Do I need a autofocus lens or would a manual one work as well with my D60?

18mm should be quite nice on a 1.5 crop. Personally I prefer around 35mm on full frame, but that's not too far away.

I don't see a problem with a manual focus lens, provided you know how to manual focus. :D

Why not look at your past shots and see what the most common focal length is, and get something around that length? It would be a shame to get an 18 only to find out that you take more (or your favourite/better) shots at 30...

How about a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM? Decent price, autofocus on a D60
