When buying a bag for a laptop.. is it best to get the next size up so the plug and power cable can go NEXT to the laptop in the main compartment (separated by a divider) so if the bag gets a bit squashed the plug isnt in a front compartment pushing hard on the laptop body?

Hope this makes sense. I have a 15" widescreen, had a wider bag and gave it to my son, only realising that I may have needed that 17" size for the above reason.

That's what I would do. You don't want a dig in your nice shiny new laptop. Either that or a neoprene pouch for just the lappy if you prefer a smaller bag.

most laptop bags i've had have a separate bit for power supplies and such

It's always better to get a bigger than smaller bag. It's surprising how many things you suddenly decide to carry with you.

I prefer one that fits the size of my laptop, so got this one HERE (http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/Computing/Accessories/Ladies+Bags/Corniche/Francesca/790713) which has a well padded compartment for the laptop and extra pockets for power leads etc,so nothing digs into the laptop, not sure what other sizes it comes in.

EDIT sorry i posted the wrong link, now rectified, the link is to dixons but i got mine from PC world :)
