Not generally considered to be up to much.Better budget alternatives are the 70-300mm offerings from Tamron and Sigma. The Canon 70-300mmIS is an excellent lens but is much pricier.

For a non-IS lens, the Sigma 70-300mm APO (£150-ish) is top of the food chain - the Tamron 70-300mm is very susceptible to chromatic aberration (I know, I had one!). For a lens with stabilisation, it's the Canon at £350-ish. And from there it's as far up as your wallet will take you!

I'd recommend the Sigma 70-300mm APO (the APO bit is important - means the lens has been made using pure science (http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lenses/lens-tech.htm), rather than glass...) for you - it's an excellent lens for the price, and they crop up 2nd hand fairly regularly at just over £100...
