Nice shots, are these at Wollaton Park?

If there was anything to criticise I would ;)

OK maybe the last one could be composed differently to give it some space in the frame to look in to.....

They look very good to me!

thanks for the comments so far. they were indeed taken at Wollaton Park.

last time i took deer shots was with my old sigma 70-300 dg macro, and i can tel you the level of detail and sharpness is 100000% improvement with the 100-400.

antc,

Out of curiousity, how close did you get? were the shots handheld or off a tripod?

Regards,

Pete

within 10-20ft, used my monopod to steady the lens. i did stand behind a tree with my camera out to the side, so as not to scare them off. i found by doing this it didnt seem to bother them much. although i have seeen people just wade in and the deer dont stay around for long.

also, with regard to what may look like sensor dirt around the deer, i can assure you that the deer had a lot of flies around them. not sure why, seemed to be swarms of them attached to each deer.

Antc,

You want to go back to the Park in another couple of weeks and you will get a real treat. At that time of year, the Red deer are rutting and you should hear the stags roaring to each other and may even see them fighting...It is probably not advisable to get so close when they are all fired up as it can be dangerous..

Its best to contact the Park ahead you're proposed visit, as they may not allow the public in unsupervised but could well have guided tours or have hides available to sit in..

regards,

Pete

Great shots!

If I were to do anything different I would pull back a little and show some of the landscape - but maybe that's just me!

I hope to be over there on Wednesday afternoon and over the coming few weeks too :)

thanks for the comments. one of the things i was thinking of changing was not having the man made fence behine. should be plenty of chance to take pics of them against the woods or a leafy background.
