I have a D200 and I am saving up for a D800 with a quality GP lens! (It will take me that long to save up and hopefully the cropped sensor resolution will be up around 10Mpixel by then :) ).

I have several nice lenses which cover a reasonable range now.

I am looking for a camera to leave in my car and maybe take to work especially on nights whilst out in the middle of nowhere! Anyway I have been thinking that maybe one of the older pro cameras might be a nice start to my backup camera bag. I am sure 6Mp will be enough!

How much should I be paying for some of the older Nikons? D1 or D2 models. I quite fancy the bullet proofness of something like that - I don't know much about the older pro range of cameras so what should I be looking for also. If the price is too high I might just look for a D80 or another D200.

Also I have a gorgeous Dean Resonator guitar which I will be selling towards funding this so if anyone does have something lying around and might be interested in a PX let me know. I am more interested in information and I cannot give a price for the camera because I don't know so I cannot stick this in Wanted!

I would think the D1 is a bit on the old side to consider nowadays, but you'll get a D2H for under £400 and Hs for another £100 or so and then the D2X and D2Xs upwards from there to about £800-1000 at a dealer for a decent example.

There's always the Fuji S5 Pro to consider as well, new for around £430-450...

I suppose it all depends on what you're after - there's a D2X in the classifieds just now for £700, but you can pick up a D200 for ~£450.

I'm beginning to think of getting a second body, if I chicken out before I've saved up for the D200, I'm going to buy a D80 - had one before, would have again...

How different IS the S5 pro to the D200?

Will absolutely all my Nikon stuff fit it ie SB600/800, lens from my sig etc. Does the S5pro have the necessary settings to use non cpu lens like my 85mm f2 ?

I would like to spend as little over £300 as possible unless a particularly good offer comes up like a D200 with a lens I like or something similar. I am in no hurry.

I want to get about 18 months use out of it before I can get the replacement for the D700!

Different sensor, couple of different buttons..that's about it

Everything Nikon will fit as it is, to all extents an purposes, a D200. Not sure about the non-cpu settings, as I haven't got any old glass, but I'm sure Mr Puddleduck will be able to advise on that.

If that's your budget then I think you're more in D1 territory than anywhere else.....

My main Body (for now) is a D300 and I have a D80 as a backup and travelling companion. The D80 is a great body to store in your glove compartment and coupled with a 18-200VR (which I see you have), it is a great combination.
I'm now considering another D200 (had one before the D300) as my back up and flogging the D80, not for any reason in particular but it will give me a 2nd pro body and access to the NPS.

I bought the lens off Puddleduck :)

I will spend more if necessary but its coming out of my next major upgrade fund so I don't want to go too far.....

What about a Fuji S2p or S3p? They are pretty cheap these days? I take it as as 2nd body it's not going to get a lot of use?

Edit: D80?

Well just bought a D1x from the gman for £188 which should arrive mid week. This is fantastic for me as I can now concentrate on stashing away vast amounts of 10ps and 5ps for the D800........ :)

Changing that screen is a doddle, if you can find one lying about somewhere. There's one on Ebay at daft money, but really it shouldn't be more than £15 or so.

Just for completeness: the S5 Pro does have the setting for non-CPU lenses. A Tamron Adaptall-2 AI-S or AI-E mount works fine, though not as well as the equivalent for Pentax.

The LCD screen (part no. 6K600-391) retails at £15.24 + VAT plus £2 p&p direct from Nikon parts dept and they will include the remote and sync covers for free!

Yeah, the S5 Pro has a "non CPU lens option"

For that 85/2, just enter 85mm, f/2.0 and you are good to go.

You can store multiple lens settings too, I love AI-s lens, so I have a few of them :)
