I started macro with a set like this. The quality isn't up to much but if you're on a budget it's a good way to get started learning the techniques.

A set of tubes are much better quality wise and if you can afford it is probably a wiser choice.

Here's one of my first macro shots, taken with a +2 filter on my old 300D + Sigma 70-300 DG combo:
