Amazing lens! I stupidly sold mine last year as I was spending a lot of time working inJapan and leaving it at home - daft thing to do, I think I sold it for £1500, and its double that now!!!

Sixteen years of working my nuts off mate, building the business up. Its just about knackered me, so its time to reap the benefits. Hoping to pack it all in within the next 5 years. Want to buy a garage???? :D
Oh and maybe a 200-400mm f4 vr.... ;)

Been there, done that and it spoils you
Kev's lens absolutely blows the 70-200 VR out of the water.. the 300mm f/4 AF-S blows the 70-200 VR out of the water.. and the 300mm f/2.8 VR blows the 300mm f/4 AF-S out of the water.
Pecking order wise... you just can't get much better than Nikon long primes.

I am thinking of this one, i have the afs300 f4 always with the TC1.7 on and could do with a bit more light, I tried the 400 and 600 at focus last week and they are so heavy

The VR is still twice the weight as the 300mm f/4.
I find the 1.7x quite good on my 300mm f/4. but on a 300mm f/2.8 VR, you can easily shoot wide open with the 1.7x, whereas on the 300mm f/4 you are probably stopping down a bit.
I'm buying the 500mm f/4 VR first week March, be interesting to see how good that is.
Andy, you really have a knack for selling some of your best kit .. and then buying them all-over again! I just saw your thread selling the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 and was wondering how soon would you post a "Wanted" for such a lens :p
On the topic of this lens ... I am curious, what's the difference between the two different 300 f/2.8?
On CameraPriceBuster (http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/cat11.html) there are two such lenses. Both are AF-S (though one is AF-S II, I have no idea there was such a thing as AF-S I to get a version II).; but the odd thing is that the one with VR is a whole £600 cheaper
Just before the price increase - lucky beggar.
I am not usually this envious but my husband is doing something similar to me, two lenses this month:D
ENJOY!

Yeah, it was really silly.. but I was living in Tokyo and leaving it at home in my wardrobe for months on end. Never used it enough.. took a hit selling that though. Stupid! :bonk:
Good buy, best investment I made was buying one, I hear the RRP is going to £4999.99 from the 1st.

I have got the 1.7 Andy. was planning on using this set up on the hills in Wales. Markjayne seems to get away with the 300mm regularly up there. He sometimes use the 1.4 also.
This lens feels so much lighter than my 200-400mm. Hence me thinking about selling it. But then again, I would only wish I hadn't in a while......

Well - if it does carry on in the present vein you will be giving PD a run for his money in the gear stakes pretty soon.
Then again, I may be underestimating just HOW much kit PD has

I do have quite a lot of stuff
TBH I don't really enjoying lugging really bulky lenses (24-70, 14-24, 300mm VR), so it tends to be the big mofos I sell, and I tend to prefer lighter options like Tamron 28-75 or Tamron 17-50! Having said that my glass collection I think is about the same as yours, although my 300mm is only the f/4 :)
The 500mm f/4 VR I'm collecting next week will be interesting!!! :suspect:

Yes mate, the 320D, save yourself some money , don't buy the cable from there, 47 euros what a rip off!!!!!!!!, make one from a cheap wired shutter release from Ebay, as you only need the cable and a 3.5mm stereo jack plug.
Kev one thing to watch out for with the 300 2.8, is to keep your hand away from the focus ring, as soon as you touch it, the lens goes into manual focus mode (not good when your panning on a fast jet :(), it caught me out a few times when I first started to use mine.

I did see one on Ebay a week or so back sold for the emigration reason. It must have been the same lens, not many are about.
That's crazy and silly prices!
I thought it was only WHE that had currently priced its' lenses a bit out of the market. They have the Sigmonster for £7,000 while others have it for under £4,000!
But to have the 200-400VR pushed that high is just silly .. how can that be attributed to the Pound dropping in value
Can anyone check if prices have gone up in Japan as well? I mean, are these increases coming from the manufacturer, or is it just here in UK?
That's mental - I can't see them selling many at that price!
Wasn't it about £3.5 a year ago?
It was just about £2,999!
I did see one on Ebay a week or so back sold for the emigration reason. It must have been the same lens, not many are about.
I didn't see it on ebay, but I would bet you saw the same one. I have to agree there aren't that many in the market, and even fewer would be up for sale at the same time; and even less than that due to owner migrating!
It was going for a very reasonable price .. I saw it at just under £3,000 and thought it may be a good buy ... but seeing how much it's priced now (£7,000) ... I think the seller may have pulled it off the market for the time being

It was £3500 in July. ;) Some went up to about £3999
I am sure you'd know the exact price :)

The prices are getting stupid. Luckily I've got everything I want (and a few things I don't ), but the price rises really killed my Canon 5D MKII plans, and I certainly wouldn't be prepared to pay the March 1st prices on any of the stuff I currently have.
My £3k of glass is probably worth about £4k now...

Theres talk of counselling in our household at the moment.:nuts:
Kev.
But will counselling straighten her out? Just ask her "Have I ever questioned you about your spending on clothes/jewellery/make-up/hair in all the years we've been together?"

Thank you. If the weather is kind to me next Friday, I might have some nice shots for you. ;)
