Hi everyone, just got my new 40D this morning, upgraded from a 400D. Just one thing I've noticed and thats that when looking through the viewfinder there seems to be like grey grain, it's more noticable when looking at a bright sky, is this normal? I've never noticed it with my 400D so I had a look through that and there is a bit but not as much as the 40D. have I got a duff camera!?
Any help greatly appreciated.

It's probably the texture of the focusing screen. It's more noticeable when looking through a lens with a smallish maximum aperture.

So there is nothing wrong with the camera then? I'm worried!
There's nothing wrong with your camera. As Anorakus said it simply the grain of the focusing screen and is there by design. As you've bought your camera new it will be fitted with the standard screen but different screens are available, one of which has an even grainier appearance than the standard screen and is used to make manual focusing easier. There is also a screen which has grid engraved on it which you can fit in place of the standard screen to help you keep horizons straight and building upright etc.

Yeah, fear not, mine is like that too.
If it gets on your wick, you can buy different focusing screens for Macro, one with a grid etc etc, but i think they are alot of money for what they are.

Yep, gonna spend a few hours out and about tomorrow getting used to it and hopefully getting some decent pics :)
I noticed it too. It looks sort of 'pixellated' to a degree...quite grainy compared to my previous.
It's just the focusing screen and nothing to worry about :)
