got this for £100 off fleabay, the optics are really mint and works fine but the rim is damaged, it does hold filters and the cap ok, its just aesthetic reasons really, is there anything i can do?

You can buy the parts from Nikon and I wouldn't imagine it'll be a big job to replace, Mr P. Duck would be the one to advise you best though....

email spareparts@nikon.co.uk with the photo and they can give you the price of the part. It might not be the easiest bit to replace but anything is repairable its just whether its worth doing.

What about permanently attaching a UV filter ring to the lens with the glass removed. It would be cheaper and a fair bit simpler. Its a idea !

I know what you mean. If it was mine I would fix it. Nikon parts are not actually that expensive so its worth waiting to see what they come back with

if it turns out not to be worth it, perhaps black tape neatly applied to cover the gap?

I don't think I'd bother doing anything with that personally..

However an option would be to consider one of those collapsible rubber lens hoods, screw it in, and just cut off the rubber with a stanley knife, would cost about £2 to do...
