OK, it seems I'm a little bit ignorant of the 450D's ISO capabilities...

Mine can seemingly only go up to 1600, but I have seen several places say the 450D has a range up to 6400. Is this true? Is there some kind of firmware upgrade that I don't know about? I bought mine June last year.

You have to set it in the custom functions, set ISO exspension to on.

450d still only goes to 3200 doesnt it?

Nope nope.
If it can do it, it will be in custom functions, usually something like "ISO expanding" and you'll have to change it to "Allow".
Then it will say H1 (ISO 3200) and then H2 (ISO 6400) instead if literally saying ISO 3200, ISO 6400.

That's if it has it.
I know the maximum on both the 350d and the 400d is 1600.

Hmm... there is a High ISO noise reduction, but other than that there is no reference to ISO in the custom menus...

Apparently it's done via exposure compensation...

You max out the ISO and then set max exposure compensation. Results will not be very usable.

OK, thanks. I don't use it much on 1600 to be fair, let alone on 3200 or 6400.

I'm pretty sure mine only went to 1600...
