the question im asking is, which is best for detail and sharpness grabbing on a D300? The reason im asking is i cant just make my mind up after reading all the reviews on the web!

basically im asking for users experience for and against on each model so i can make my mind up for my hols to egypt in three weeks:)

(in case you don't know DK is a well known photographer/reviewer)

the Sigma is meant to be sharper across the field though.

I would say the reason the Sigma is selling so fast is because it is the best known third party lens (Sigma being the biggerst third party manu.). IMO the Tokina is better, but not by that much IQ wise, but it just feels better made and the constant f/4 is appealing.

These threads show photos shot almost entirely with the 12-24 (all exifis intact), although you can't really pick out sharpness in small sizes like that. :)
