Ladies and gentlemen, the worlds most unwilling model, my wife Sue. Decided to take a picture of her on one of the rare occasions she puts some war paint on and gets smartened up. Twas also a good excuse to try out my new 50mm 1.7 lens. I'd really like to get into portrait photography more but have no idea what I'm doing and have no gear. Let me know what you think (about the photo).

lovely looking wife kev, but i feel the picture is somewhat over-saturated and she looks likes she's about to boil over (no doubt CT will fix the skin, he's good at that), also a bit shiny too.
just my opinion.

Considering you say she's unwilling, that's a very natural smile she's got there. Has me convinced its real anyway :)

Technically there may be imperfections, but don't let that put you off, it's a lovely shot and a very good attempt at this style of photography.
You've got the basics right, the focus on the eye, the eye contact, the depth of field with the feet in the background, and the angle of your wife to show this.

I would have left a little bit more space on the bottom of the image and a little more on the left too, but like I say, it's a great shots on its own :)

you have a pretty wife Kev...love the pose and her smile! She does look a bit shiny though, some translucent face powder waffed about on a big brush luvvy will sort that out! ;)

Skin tones are not my strong point at all, infact lately I'm having trouble getting anything right in photoshop. Thanks for the comments.

Thanks Marcel, this photo is probably the best of about 12, most of which she either had the lazy eye from the flash or was looking anywhere other than the lens. Typically it was those shots that had slighlty more space underneath her hands. there is some more space on the left but there is also some windowsill, some junk and some blown highlights.

Thanks Marianne,. More war paint needed then. I'll send you her number and you can tell her while I run for cover.

She'll lynch you for that if she reads this!

2 minutes could do more but just to show you do not need to a lot with a great smile.

now that is good. I tried some skin smoothing techniques and both failed miserably. Any chance you let me know what you done to the shot?

Hmm... bit too much I think... it'd be easier working on a RAW file, but here's my 2 minutes' worth...

1. made a duplicate copy (as always)
2. adjustments/hue saturation......... lowered the sat about 15% also upped lightness 8%
3. Noise reduction
4 smart sharpen.

All done by PS CS2 with very few amendments to PS CS2 defaults.

Maybe I a m the chosen one? :bonk:
