Test shot on my lunch hour from a Sigma 90mm f/2.8 AI-S macro - wide open, bought from here: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=119102

(for some reason the D700 doesn't allow 90mm to be chosen in "Non CPU lens", so I had to choose either 100mm or 86mm )
I don't do enough macro to justify ££££ on one, but I think this will do nicely. I don't know anything about the lens at all, so I would guess its at least 20 years old. Maybe more... optically it seems very nice though!
stunning shot, great depth of colour and looks pretty damn sharp!
Shoot a portrait or something with a dodgy background, lets have a look at the bokeh at 2.8
Yeah, I know its a macro but I'm interested, it looks smooth/blended in that pic but it might be different used as a tele, old fast stuff from any manufacturer is nearly always equal to, or better than what they make today.

That's a damn fine macro mate, great colours and sharp where it matters. Nice buy!

Are my eyes deceiving me, the shot looks overall soft.

The tips of the stamen look sharp to me..... Nice shot. Macro's are tricky blighters!

Puddleduck.....not much wrong with that. The sharp zone is indeed sharp and for wide open from a Sigma very acceptable.
The thing is, that shot doesn't test the corners much, because they are dark.
Try doing something similar that fills the frame and see how much fall off in the corners there is, if any. Vignetting would be my fear rather than lack of sharpness.
If that is how it performs opened up, lets see what it is like stopped down to about 11 or 16. I have an old Tamron SP28-80 with 1:1 macro and it was a belter. I haven't used it for ages, on a Nikon mount, but some of those old macros from the independents were very good indeed. The Tamron 90mm was always raved about and now on FX would still do a very fine job. I have no doubt that your Sigma will be comparable - a good find!
Not many macro lenses are bad performers, but old Sigmas weren't as well built as Tamron, Tokina, Kiron, Vivitar etc.

Yeah, it probably not as well built as the others. I have a Tamron 90mm f/2.5 and that is just sold metal, and I've also had the Kiron as well (amazing lens)
Nevetheless I do like this little Sigma, a few more I got today, messing around with a Kenko 12mm extension tube on this. All wide open.

For £35 I'd be happy too! Why don't I ever see these bargains?
