Ok, this is my first time opening myself up for constructive criticism, so if I find myself whimpering in the corner, I only have myself to blame ;)

Took this photograph in the Spring (it was also my first time doing a macro shot), would like to know how I could've improved/can improve it.

Thanks in advance :)

Composition-wise I like it - plain or out-of-focus background, and contrasting colours between subject and habitat.

Personally, with natural history, I like the subject to be big and bold, and the centre of attention. My eye is being drawn to all the highlights on the greenery, so they could be diffused a little.

These adjustments could be done in image-editing software, which real amateurs like me tend to fall back on a lot, but it doesnt make up for getting it right in the camera - thats a real buzz.

For a first attempt it's a cracker - nice subject too - the contrast of the red & the green really works, IMO. I think the ladybird is just slightly out of focus however which spoils it a little - if you look carefully the sharp point is on the leaf just to the left of (and I'm guessing just in front of) the ladybird. With such a small depth of field the focus has to be spot on - I've come unstuck with that a few times as well as just the smallest movement can throw the focus onto something other than the subject!

I like the shot though! Thanks for sharing it!

I love the colours. Lovely shot.

As said above a slight crop might help to bring the bug into the centre of attention.

The reflection on the bug's back is a little distracting. I dont know what you could do to change this though. Were you using flash?

I actually like it as it is, it may be a little soft, and not a real close up, but it just appeals to me ! :)

Thanks for the comments :)

No flash used on this one (have taken various macro shots since but this is still my favourite!), it was just a really REALLY bright spring day. Maybe a photoshop correction might make it better?

ISWYM about the focus being slight to the left of the ladybird...the little bugger kept moving! :D

There's several ways you could crop this.

Very nice ladybug shot...my next lens will be a macro for sure. Here's a crane from this morning.
