Hi guys,

Which would you reccomend and why?

I have noticed there are advantages to both but I am hoping for some opinions on IQ/general usage from owners.

It might be handy to post up what camera you already have, if you have one, for people to help recommending....

I used to have a 300D but currently have a G9.
Looking to get back into the DSLR scene. :)

Handle both.

IMHO, the main difference is in how the cameras feel and operate. Depending upon the size of your hands, how well you "click" with the user interface, how heavy you like your camera etc., you should soon know which is right for you.

If after handling both you still can't decide, then buy the cheaper 450D and put the extra cash towards more/better glass, a photo course, a trip to somewhere nice to take some photos.....

Having used both I would say they are both great cameras but they're in a different range, how do Canon describe it, consumer and prosumer? I think the 40D would win everytime but as iriches says a better lens would make a bigger difference to IQ then the 40D would over the 450D

I think I'm leaning towards the 40D to be honest, it has a bigger buffer and faster fps then the 450D. The ISO performance is higher and max iso is 3200 compared to the 450D's 1600.
I think decision made. :)

Exactly the reasons I upgraded to it from my 400D, fps & noise handling at higher ISO

You wont be disappointed. The other thing is with a slightly larger camera is better balanced with the larger lenses on.

I went with the 450D a couple of months back. I generally don't shoot in low light (handheld at least) and I can count the amount of times I've wanted to fire shots off in quick succession on one hand. Sure the ISO performance and the general build and feel of the thing would have been nice, but not exactly another £200 or more's worth of nice. If you think you need what the 40D offers you but the 450d doesn't then go for it, if not, consider spending the extra on some nice glass instead :)

Tell me about it - I'm dashing around like mad scraping together stuff to fund gear - already raided the back of the sofa and checked under all the cushions :shrug:

IMO the 450d feels like something from the early learning centre and functions similarly, too.

The 40D feels like a proper big boy's toy.

That's the reason I upgraded my 350d to a 40d.
