Having recently purchased a D300 i am looking to replace my 18-55 kit lens for something more powerful.
The lenses I currently have are, Sigma 150mm, Sigma 70-300mm and Sigma 10-20mm.
Does anybody have suggestions for a walk about lens to replace my kit lens, price up to £500.
Cheers.:help:

I would say the best nikon walk about lens would be the 18-200 VR. It does pretty much everything and is sharp. It isn't the best in low light but to fit inside your budget I would definitely consider this lens.

I'd probably try a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or a Sigma 24-70 f2.8.

I have the Tamron myself and love it! :)

A friend of mine suggested the Tamron 17-50 but i always like to get the forums views and opinions.

The Tamron 17-50 appears to be a cracking lens, but so does the Sigma 24-70. With the 10-20 already in the bag I would be tempted to go with the Sigma myself, but I guess it all depends if you find yourself using the 17-24 range a lot when walking about.

i replaced a sigma 10-20 and a sigma 24-70mm f2.8 with a nikon 16-85mm vr excellent IQ, and get a fast prime like a nifty fifty or a 30mm for lowlight.

Many thanks for all your replys, will take them all on board and sort out a suitable lens.

I was wondering what you mean when you say "more powerful"? Are you referring to a lens in the same zoom range, or with greater reach, or better light gathering potential? Also what things do you want to use the walkabout lens for primarily?

I have the 18-200 VR, it is an ideal walk about lens. It goes from wide to reasonably long whilst still being light and compact. The quality is good and it is in budget.

Hi
I also have a D300 with Sigma 10-20mm, nikon 10.5 fisheye and a nikon 18-200 VR. These 3 lenses make a go walkabout kit and cover a good range as long as low light is not needed. The 18-200 VR is nice and small and not heavy also the VR is handy.
The only drawback with the 18-200 VR is pincushion at wide angle end and some fringing at the edges of the frame in certain conditions all of which can be corrected in post processing in Photoshop.
Go for the 18-200 VR. :nikon:

By more powerful i mean a faster lens, i think it's between the Tamron 17-50 or the Sigma 24-70.
Thanks for all your help.

You're welcome, you've narrowed it down to two good choices but I personally wouldn't classify them as "walk about" lenses, though it does depend on what you shoot.

A walkabout lens (to me) is a bit of an all-rounder from wide to a good tele range and hence a few of us have suggested the 18-200 VR. But like I say, good choices you have there and hope they fit the bill.
