there is soooo much distortion on both sides i think its quite bad, the people are stretched out quite badly as if i had used a 14mm

not been to much into group pics but when i do sizes like that i always try to get people to stand in an arc to stop the issue.

I see that - have no clue why though.
Have you had this lens long?
Has it shown this softness in this area before?

Sadly you might have found why the other person was selling it.
24mm is wide on full frame. The stretching at the edges is quite normal for a wide rectilinear lens, where the image has to be stretched to keep straight lines from being curved. It's unavoidable. Don't use it to shoot people, or if you do, keep them away from the edges.
The softness issue is something else.
Time to get it checked by Nikon? Is it still under warranty, and if so have you got the original receipt for it and warranty card from the original owner?

The second shot looks more like motion blur than a soft lens.
Do some tests on a brick wall with a tripod.

I don't think my 24-70mm would be like that

I am pretty sure its not motion, but the brick wall idea is a good one I will have a go at that ta

24mm is 24mm. It's very easy to check with a side by side comparison. Stretching is worst in the conrners, and close to zero around the centre.

Did anyone ask the question of who'd win,
Darth Vader vs Batman
Indiana Jones vs Jack Sparrow
Stargate SG1 vs Tuscan Raiders
Agent Smith vs Boba Fett
:D
It may be slightly distorted but its a brilliant shot.

totally off topic but heres a couple of the movie characters there, they do take pride in being authentic, we raised nearly a grand towards children's charities from the weekend, we normally raise between 10-15k per year. we also support medi-cinema and make a wish

I would say that it's normal for a 24mm prime on FX/24X36mm format. A Leica or other rangefinder would suffer less as they have a different optical formulation because the rear element doesn't have to stay clear of a mirror.
