I'm really struggling for light at this time of year, especially in the shade. These are as fast I can get, which is 800 ISO and 1/60 at F8 with flash on full power which is a lot more flash than I like to use- I prefer not to use it at all.

Binned a lot of blurry shots this morning to get these.

Hi CT, they look great to me. I'm just wondering why you shoot this kind of shot at F8, not a bit wider?

That's as fast I can get Pete with the 100-400L and the 1.4X teleconverter. :(

That makes sense, Does your flash give much light at 560mm?

CT

Well it's actually 560mm Peter with the 1.4XTC, and I lose a whole stop -from F5.6 to F8 max aperture, but yes the 580 EX is more than capable of lighting that distance and much further. These shots are only at about 20 feet from the camera. With fully charged batteries the flash will keep up with the high speed drive.... for a while anyway. :p

LOL well sussed on the effective focal length. :D

Nice shots.

Note:
You can always "cheat" with the f8 bit, with an "ickle bit of sticky tape" on those first three contacts :):nono: :(

Either way it looks to me like you got the shot with what you had, well done

The sticky tape trick is a'fix' for AF not working with a converter on none 1 series bodies, I don't think it has any effect on the the effective aperture?

I do believe Santa is going to solve a lot of my problems anyway. :woot: :D

Of course ... DOHHHH! :bang:

Best of luck with Santa. Better leave him a big mince pie and a bottle of 20yr old.

Well worth the effort - our robins are always under your feet when you are covered in mud digging but elusive as soon as a camera appears.

Envy you the perch as ideal for Christmas shots.

you knows you want the 2.8 :D
oh and in case santa's a little none the wiser there's a review in one of this month's mags on the 800mm sigmonster too...perhaps leaving a copy open at required page might do the trick?

Struggling or not ... they still cut the mustard, CT!

First is my fave, the light on the Robin's back has a nice warmth to it, he almost looks like he's perched on your indoor chrimbo tree:lol:

As for the last one ... Im all to familiar with those kind of shots ... unfortunately!

Think you will find its a 500 F4 L that will be arriving via santas sleigh ;)

Second Robin shot is cream of these ! :)

Great shots of the Robin, although the OOF leaf behind it is a little distracting, at first I thought it was a frog.:coat:

Nope... too late me orders gone in - wrote me note and sent it up the chimney for the fairies and everything.

Thanks Dave, but they really are lacking the fine feather detail which makes all the difference with bird shots. 1/60th is really pushing it at that focal length.. even with IS and on a tripod. The high ISO isn't helping either.

Cedric, that first shot is pure class! Awesome!

I love these shots, you've really used the flash well. Were you using it as a fill or your main source of light?

I metered for the ambient light - 1/60 at F8 and set the flash on full power, so nothing clever at all on my part the TTL system has sorted it out. :D

Normally though in good light, I'd reduce the flash power by two stops to just 'lift' the shot and fill the shadows a bit. The light was so dull I left it on full power for these. They look over-flashed to me, but perhaps it's because I know how dull it really was.
