Best camera for under £1200

Hi Guys,

First time i have posted on here.

I am coming into some money soon so i am hoping to buy a new camera and wondered which camera you would suggest.

i need as much info on it as you could find.

ok ill give you everything you want.

i have a fujifilm finepix s5800 (8mega pixels)

with this camera i take portriat but with a new one i wanna do portrait and sports.

i would like this to be enough for body and lense.

why not go for the 40D and kit lens and you will have enough money left over to buy a second hand canon 70-200 f/4L lens.

I would probably take it a step further and get a 450D and a nice portrait lens (50mm f1.4 or 85mm f1.8) and the 70-200L f4. Will see more value in good glass than the upgraded body I think.

I'd go for a brand new 40d (£550 (http://www.parkcameras.com/7417/Canon-EOS-40D.html)), a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8(£350 (http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod171.html)), and a Canon 70-200 f/4 (£550 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005QF6T/letscook/ref=nosim)). That puts you at £1400. The 70-200 and 24-70 can both be had second hand for around £100-£200 less, and similarly so can the 40d.

For portraits you will probably want a flash as well. If you can get the lenses second hand you may have enough for a second hand 430EX.

don't just tie yourself to Canon without looking at the others too e.g. Nikon D90, Sony A700 etc.
They are all good but they handle differently & have a different mix of features - some will suit you better than others.

Why we going the Canon line here?
What about Nikon i would say the D90 or D300 are in witha good shout(and it's not as i have one) as they seem to be a strong choice in the sports photography, or am i wrong?

My recommendation would be something like a Nikon D90 plus some decent glass, dont spend it all on a body and have no decent glass to use on it

I have the Nikon D300 and love it, all reviews give it good marks
But you'd have to buy some glass as well which will take you over budget, so Id say the Nikon D90 is a mighty fine camera to.

I know that you could get a Nikon D90, SB900 Flash, batts and charger, and a 35mm lens for 1200 quid

or Nikon D90 Body + Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 ED-IF AF-S VR DX + Hoya 72mm Haze UV for £1170

or Canon EOS 40D + Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM for around £800 then get some accessories

I'd say buy the best you can for the budget you have otherwise it'll cost you money 2 months later when you read reviews on other stuff, then you want to upgrade. quality gear holds its price better than the cheaper stuff.

Yup, as the D300 will put you over your budget with a lens I would also say take a look at the excellent Nikon D90. The Canon D50 is a great choice as well.

Well I'll agree that certainly a no brainer. The guy want to shoot portraits and sports, exactly how is he going to do that with one wide angle and a standard 50mm?:shrug:

Go for whechever camera feels good to you and who's menu's you can work with. Lens wise a 50mm or 85mm is ideal for portraits and wide enough for some wider sports shots (teams etc) Then you need a telephoto, you don't say what kind of sports and some are faster than others and some are indoors vs outdoors. Something like a 70-200mm would be a good place to start although you can get 70-300mm telephotos too they do tend to be higher apertures (f5.6 at the longer end) so a bit slower. Don't forget Sigma or Tamron lenses too. You can find some really good reviews of them on the www.

As a few others have said, go to a good camera shop and handle a few and see what you like. From a practical perspective, Canon and Nikon are probably the best supported brands of camera with regard to range, lenses, accessories, 3rd party equipment etc. You will also find much more second hand equipment for both due to their popularity.

Certainly try the Nikon D90 as others have suggested. It's the right price point and leave you plenty for lenses. The D300 is also great, but £300 more and unlikely to deliver much added benefit versus good glass. Nikon lenses are normally excellent but can be dear.

If you are serious about portrait (i.e. sit down and posed), remember you will need to invest in some good lighting equipment with flashes and/or studio lighting. This alone can add up to £500 at the cheaper end, before camera body and lens.

For sport, it heavily depends if it's inside and outside and at what distance to determine the best lens(es).

oh yea i went down to my local shop and got touchy feeley with the canon eos50d nd its a good camera

and i have set aside £600 for lights and as background as i already have a background frame.
