would a eos 10d make a good back up body fora eos 450d?

Yep no reason why not! All the lenses and accessories will be interchangeable :)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the 10D will take EF-S lenses? I'm sure I've read that somewhere!

your backup should be as close to your current body as possible. it may be best to think of it as a second body - and make use of it rather then "just in case"

It was just that i have both and dont want to buy another if i did'nt have to.
