I've never seen my husband move so fast off a chair! Although all the men will disagree I like the pose in 2 better.

The second is my favorite also.....

Steep

Well I think the 'exposure' in the first shot is spot on :) but I also prefer the pose in the second shot. If I'm being critical her right eye (in the second shot) is lost in shadow, maybe you could bring it out a bit?

InaGlo

1st one for me, I like the pose & the facial expression & though I know this is probably being more personal than perhaps I should towards the model, I think she looks gorgeous here where I think the 2nd pose, well theres something with her mouth that doesnt quite do it for me ... I see she got her nails done though!

Here's one more, needs a little photoshop attention but you get the general idea.

I do have another couple of (what i believe are) very good ones, unfortunately she is topless so not sure if I can post them without offending people

Is there a restriction on 'glamour/naked' pics? Or should there be a special area of the People and Portraits Forum to post such images? Cant believe anyone should be surprised/offended by seeing such images on a Photo forum - as long as they're legal eh?

Marcel

That last one is the one for me. The pose and angle are spot on
The first one, the pose does nothing for me but the lighting and exposure have been well executed.
The second, I like the posing, but agree with Steep. Here eye does seem to be lost slightly in the shadows...nothing a little photoshopping can't fix though.

As for the topless, that's fine mate. If you want to put them in this thread, just edit the thread title to start with [NSFW] to warn people (who are at work/net cafe or may have kids etc nearby)
Or feel free to start them in a separate thread if you like (again, starting the title with [NSFW]).

2nd shot for me (of the two new ones).
I love the lighting!
One little critisism though ... cant you PS all the creasing out of the background as its spoiling a lovely looking shot!

Id love a go at this sort of photography myself, how'd you get such a willing model?

more ps work on post processing will really make them stand out(the shots that is)i agree with gloria, the creases detract from an excellent shot

Excellent pics - agree about the creases, maybe try cutting out the model and putting them on a different background. (but what do i know :) )

What sort of lighting did you use, 1 light, 2 ? any tech details you care to share.

Gorgeous model... the lighting and skin tones are spot on... as has been said the background in the final image is slightly distracting but could be easily PSed to smooth that out.

RobbieW
11-11-2006, 19:10
Thanks for your comments, I need to have a play with photoshop to remove the creases. I am very new to photoshop so hoepfully I will get it right.

There are plently of studio's around the country who can arrange sessions for you to take photo's of models. If you look in the back of Practical Photography there are usually loads of adverts. I use one in Reading.

The earlier photo's involved 3 lights, 1 master on the left and 2 slaves to the right of the model, and the last shot involved two lights both from the right. All photo's were taken at F11 using ISO100 and shutter speed of about 125. Although some people like to use cables between the camera and the lights, I prefer to use an infr-red trigger as this enables you to have more movement without risking pulling the lights over.

I love that last shot - it's such a shame the background lets it down. I'd love to have a go at this stuff myself, but I'd need to spend a full month in the gym first

Glo, I'd gladly model for you :)

I agree the background is distracting. No3 is still the out and out winner for me, she looks entirely natural and unforced compared to all the others.

The nude shot needed a fill light on the left IMO, I don't think you needed the beads, and the bangle/watch strap looks a bit heavy and 'butch'. The pose looks quite strained, and she doesn't look too comfortable with it, but nudes are one of the most difficult things to light and to photograph tastefully and well.

All round a very good effort though.

Can anyone offer any photoshop advice on how to tidy up the background?

Thanks for all your comments.

Can anyone offer any photoshop advice on how to tidy up the background?

You can use the clone tool or any smudge smear type tool (at low opacity) to even out the background, but it's a fair bit of work to keep the change in tones where they should be.

Try using the Magic Wand tool to just lift her out altogether or cut the background out to a clean white....select white as the background colour before you cut.

Darryn
11-11-2006, 19:42
Make a copy of the main image as a 2nd layer, select 2nd layer, use the magnetic lasso to cut her out, including gaps under arms, press delete, invert selection, guassian blur til background looks smooth(7pixels on small pic in thread), flatten layers.... job done.

Also there are 101 ways of doing everything in PS and that way is my favoured atm, as ive just finished the my first Scott Kelby book and that is basically how he does everything... ive now got to go and talk to me mother as i was using your image as an example to check it worked how i thought it should... she called me a dirty little perv and walked out of the room... some people dont appreciate art.

Jusy made an attempt at that, need to keep practicing but looks ok for a first attempt. Think i need to invest in a photoshop 7 book

I think the light in the nude shot is brilliant, shadow line exactly over the right nipple, the model is turned so the left nipple is on the outline of her body - a lot of glamour shots use that technique.

As for background creasing.... iron it!

I just happen to have a copy of "50 Fast Photoshop 7 Techniques" (includes a cd of stuff) was £25.95 when new, I'll have a browse round see how much they're going for 2nd-hand... a decent offer (+ p&p) and its yours...

RobbieW
11-11-2006, 20:21
That would be good. Thanks

As for ironing - if only it were that easy, due to the size we use a roll of paper, and it gets creased very easily. The best thing to use is black backgrounds, more forgiving.

I think the last shot is bet of all, despite the already mentioned background issues.
Why is it the best for me? Not because she's nude but because that semi-nude stuff feels very dates in style and not enough attention has been paid to the lighting, they are lacking atmosphere that is very apparent in the last pic.
The crops of the 1st set look unplanned too, they feel like you were not thinking about framing the shots, but more about just trying to get some sexy look going.

Again, the last pic looks like you relaxed and thought about things before taking the shot. Maybe I would have gone for a tighter crop, just above the knees. Right now I feel like.. she's in frame, but not in frame. I love the lighting on that one.

Most importantly. Get a new background roll or pull it through till it's tidy. I'm sure you are kicking your own butt for not doing that already ;)

keep going.. keep enjoying.
Regards, Rob.

We've decided to delete a couple of flippant posts from this thread. No big deal, but they weren't contributing anything to the thread. ;)

We don't get much nude work posted on the board, but it's just another branch of photography, and one which is far from easy, so if we can please keep the comments photography based?

Thanks. :)

They are all good shots, of a very pretty model ! :)

3rd one is the best in my eye, just because she looks so relaxed and happy to be in front of the camera.

Hope you don't mind as you've not ticked your image editing, but I've just done a very quick clipping path, made a selection, inverted it while putting on 1 pixel feather, then went into lens blur and did a quick tweak of the settings.....hair at the back is a bit scrappy, as I said very quick edit.

Thats very good, thanks... I need to learn photoshop so that I can do things like that.

I felt the backgroup let me down in that picture, I only started doing this about 6 months ago, so steep learning curve.

The nude shot needed a fill light on the left IMO

I disagree with you on this one CT - I think it's the best of the ones posted here, though I'd crop it above the knee and do a gaussian blur splodge to distract attention from the cobby background (edit - as Glen's done here...)

Many photographers when in a studio are tempted to use all the lights in there, because thay can. Don't. Build up your light gradually starting with just one.

Don't forget when you hire a studio that the colorama backdrop is a consumable item - pull it down and tear it off til you get a smooth surface - if the studio manager gets shirty with you take your trade elsewhere.

Right. I'm definitely going to organise a Southern Area Glam shoot for those who want to do some of this stuff.
I'll start a new thread on the matter when I get all the details sorted.

CT
13-11-2006, 18:06
I disagree with you on this one CT -.

That's OK Rob, I'll still talk to you. :D

You're probably right anyway, it's a long time since I've done any of this stuff. It does look lots better with the bg sorted.

RobbieW
13-11-2006, 18:11
Arkady, the reason the back drop isn't too good is because this is a taster type session. A group of us meet once a month and try our hand at taking photo's. Because its in a village hall the backdrop does get creased.

The guy that organsises this has a studio in Reading that is avaliable for hire, and the backgrounds that are avaliable there are perfect.

If you are interested in organising a southern area glam shot it may be worth organising through him as he can arrange the model and the studio.

I would definately attend (if you'd invite me),

Rob

Post work for glamour type shots can make a big difference - I processed a few of the shots to demonstrate, all received the following.

Colour balance tweak
11% increase in saturation
Noise removal on the skin
Tweaked Highlights/Midtones/Shadows
Slight sharpen
Eyes brightened and increased in contrast
Copied layer and on the copy
Gaussian blur 8px radius
Mask created from image luma values
Masked copy set to Soft Light blend mode (this adds a soft warm glow)

I also replaced the crinkled background using a (quick and dirty) hand painted mask layer to reveal a simple gradient.

Some excellent PP work there, I must learn how to do all this. How was the gradient achieved by hand painting a mask layer as it really finishes of the picture?

The last one for me for sure. Of those last two you posted, that one - to my mind - is art, the other of those is a little "page 3" for my taste.

I agree also that I'd have no problem with seeing this sort of stuff posted more often. I'm sure we're all smart enough to work out that there's a line between art shots like these, and porn! ;)

I think the third pic is my favorite she looks so fresh and bashfull with a slice of cheekiness. Although the las tfull shot is nice although i would prefer more of the shade on the lower half and brighter on the top. But thats just me great all round though.

For me, the third one of the originals posted is far and away my favourite. Her expression is so natural and she genuinely looks comfortable with the situation/. I'm not saying she doesn't in the others, she looks a total professional, but that smile is fantastic. Obviously you had a good rapport, which is just as important as any camera settings imo!!!

Amazingly sexy shot, maybe a touch of contrast and shadow would enhance it a little more?

Just my tuppence worth.

One of the most fundfamental things about cameras and photographs is the ability to be absolutely candid, graphic and above all jaw droppingly different in everbody's eyes.

If a picture of a baby was submitted and comments came back, awwww, cooo cooo, is'nt she gorgeous, and wow. We wouldn't bat an eyelid, but because we see an adult naked people get all defensive.

I do hope we do not need another Forum just for glamour and Nude and password protected.

Art is for all and we should be able to make our minds up on the subject.

Sorry if I sound angry, i am not I just do not like censorship.

I could have missed something, but I can't see any post in this thread which might have prompted your comments. Are you replying to anyone in particular, or are you just taking this opportunity to educate everyone as to your enlightened state of being ?

Yes, photography is art. But I reserve the right to be offended by its content if I so wish.
