And pretty good first attempts they are too Matt ... especially with a new camera too ...
The first ... seems a little over-exposed and slightly oof ...imo ... but good subject and general composition ... it would work better if you can catch the subjects head/eyes rather than just its back ...
The second one is spoilt by having two subjects ... draws the eye back & forth ... and again you have captured their backs ...
You also need to be wary of the background ... try and avoid lighter stuff that is distracting ... and close down the DoF a touch too ...all imo of course ...:D
Good shots to practice with though ...;)
:p

The green one nailed it mattmo, good tries though :)
Watch your ISO / Exposure.
Both shots look somewhat noisy. This generally either results from having under exposed and correcting later or ISO>=1600.
If you don't already shoot in RAW there is much more colour space to play.
(Under exposed shots dont post process well in either case)
Good efforts Matt in what looks like contrasty and difficult light. Think about using a tripod or monopod for macro shots, I rarely attempt macro shots without a tripod, but my hand holding at these close distances is rubbish.
