Will I get vignetting using a cokin P holder and a Canon 17-85 lense

As the title says really,

I'm looking to buy some filters and noticed cokin do a wideangle holder that only holds 1 filter, will I need this for the 17 end of my lense or will I be fine with the standard stuff?

I have the cokin p holder (triple) and although in all honesty I have not used it that much when i did first try it with the grad filter in it I had no vigenetting that I can remember.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures to hand to show you.

If you are shooting on a crop body you'll be fine.

You will see vignetting on a full frame body at a genuine 17mm (as opposed to 17mm x 1.6)

I just tried it on, and there is slight darkening of the corners at 17mm without the adaptor fitted, (bare lens)

And with the adaptor fitted there is no difference at all.

This was done looking at a white painted wall, and when i say it's slight it's hardly noticable and would easily be corrected in camera raw.

By adaptor I mean the ring and holder that screws into the front of your lens.

i very much doubt you will have a problem, i tried CPL and a grad filter on my 17-35mm tamron at the widest it didn't vignette at all considering your barrel is even smaller than mine...67mm or 62mm isn't it?

I bought a Cokin P and three HiTech ND grads (soft) last week and have just tried them out for the first time. The thread that I was about to post was to be entitled:

"Help :eek:! Horrible vignetting on my 85mm filters at 18mm (FX)"

... or something catchy like that :D.

So, yes, on a full frame sensor camera - things can get nasty!

(Wish I'd just saved up for the Lee 100mm kit now :().

The normal Cokin holder is unusable but the wide one is reasonable, need to zoom out to about 19mm, but at 17mm any holder can be cloned out easily.

Sounds like you are using the one with 3 slots, which is totally unusable on my 17-35!

Not totally sure, Andy :shrug:! The holder kit is a "P" model, which is recommended for wide-angle lenses and takes the 85mm filters, but (as I've just noticed in the link below, only from 28mm onwards) ...

If you meant, was I using the holder with one slot, or the holder with 3 slots, then the answer is one slot. With my 28mm-75mm Tamron, I even see vignetting if I use the 3 slot with a UV filter already screwed into the lens, at 28mm :(.

What's more, I can't seem to use my circ pol filter with this kit, either. If I screw it directly into the lens, then I can't turn it without pulling out the sliding grad filter and turning the ring by pinching it from the sides. On the other hand, I can't use it by fitting an adapter to it and dropping it into the 3 slot holder, as it's so fat that there's no room left for the ND grad itself :bang:.

I definitely see myself abandoning this system for full format use and starting again with a set of 100mm filters :|.

P.S. That 17-35mm Nikkor is pure porn :D!

You can just about see my filter holder in this shot as I tilted it to compensate for the horizon (look on the left) but tbh I don't think its enough of a problem to justify the change although its tempting!

Well, that's much less vignetting than I have been seeing on my test shots. Still, I think I know why now. I had a (fairly thick) UV filter screwed into the lens, which was causing the holder to be pushed further away from the end of the lens and that seemed to add to the problem.

I will keep the Cokin P and HiTech grads for use on my D40, but I really want to shoot landscapes with wider lenses than 28mm, whilst using a screw-in circ pol, so I think that the standard Lee kit could be the way to go for the D700. Just couldn't find a stockists (with stock) when I needed one lst month ;).
