d40 focusing problem.. help

i have been using my nikon d40 for a while on sport photography and has been working fine. but i got it out today and when i went to take a few practice shots for lighting the screen focus didnt change but when i looked on the screen it looked alright. it was doin this for a while then i noticed that the lense wasnt auto focusing (yes it was in auto mode). even when i moved the camera around on different distant objects it didnt change.

has this happened to any one else or what can i do to solve this problem.

Try taking the lens off gently cleaning the contacts on the body and lens making sure no dirt gets in the camera, then replace lens. It worked for me when I had the same problem. Keith

Sorry if this is the basics, but you haven't accidently set the lens to manual focus have you?

Mine was doing this for a bit, took the lens of cleaned the contacts bam were off!

that has sort of worked it focuses most of the time now. thanks a lot. is there any thing else i could do or anything better to use to clean it. thanks
