I purchased a Nikon D60 in January after reading a lot about how it along with the D40 was the ideal entry-level DSLR. I was fairly happy with my purchase, but after two weeks, much to my chagrin, I knocked the kit lense rendering it unable to auto or manual focus. I think a gear came loose inside.
So I sold it for parts and have just bought a new lense, which I think is a little different to the original kit lense. The end of the lense is a little fatter than the original and it is REALLY slow to autofocus, not to say noisy too. Sometimes it will whirr for a few seconds, zooming in and out, before settling on a position which leaves the frame completely out of focus. It was listed on Amazon, where I purchased the item, as a Nikon "R709" lense. Is it faulty? Is this lense notoriously bad? Should I look for the original, which I think had a skinnier end (for want of a better phrase).
Also, any recommendations for a reasonably priced 18-55mm lense which will AF with my D60?

Firstly, :welcome: to TP :)
According to the R709 code, the lens you've bought is the Nikon 18-55mm VR, which is one that is sold as a kit lens with the D60, so it should work fine. What lens did you have originally that you broke?

Um, I'm not sure. It might be the same one, in which case this question is stupid. Apologies.
I just don't remember an instance of the original lense not autofocusing with ease, and I don't remember the motor sounding so loud...flimsy.
With the original lense I knocked the aperture end against a sideboard. I didn't think that would render it in need of a servicing that was going to cost me 120 GBP. As side question, is there an issue with recent Nikon products build quality?

Just checked. It is the same one that came with the kit. Oops. Still, the enquiry about build quality still stands.

No build quality issues that I'm aware of, but that doesn't mean you haven't ended up with a duff lens - have you contacted the seller?
Are you sure you've not damaged the contacts on the camera side?

I'm not sure if I've damaged the contacts. I don't think I have. It seems to be working okay now. Still, might take it to a service centre to get it checked out, jut in case I have a duff one like Flash said.

Just get it done, otherwise you could keep going round buying a lens then getting rid to buy another and the prob could be the body.
OK, so it will cost to service but in the long run its money well spent.

I had a 18-55 lens and changed it for a `VR` version and the VR version was somewhat noiser by the sound of a `click` before and after focusing, all i could put it down to was the VR mechanism working when i press the shuteer half way down.
Lens works fine as does the VR function.
take it back to the shop if it's under warranty to see what they say before you start going to service centres

You know what, its probably just the normal sound of the lense. Using it today with no problems at all.
Thanks all!
