Memory cards- Brands

Does it matter what brand you buy?

Im looking at getting a few more and always look at sandisk but are the cheaper different brands worth it?

Any thoughts, feedback on other brands ect, what do you do?

I had solely used Lexar cards for a while but one day needed a card in a hurry so bought a 4GB Peak card from Novatech for £7. Sure, it doesnt write as fast as the 1GB Lexar cards (which were £34 a pop!) I have but other than that its been bulletproof.

I think the main difference between the cheaper cards and the more expensive ones are the write speed, but if you dont need to shoot 6fps or above you should be fine!

It maybe worth a good look through previous threads, I seem to remember reading something about cards and incompatability with some Nikon cameras. :thumbs:

I generally stick with Sandisk. Never had one fail yet and I've still got my 1Gb cards from 5-6 years ago (now being used by youngest on his 400D).

I've had a PNY fail, a Kingston and a Transcend that can't be read by my backup device so now I just stick with sandisk.

All of my cards are Kingston because I deal with Kingston every day, but I'd happily buy Sandisk or Lexar if the situation dictated it.

Had bother with Innovate failing to record data.

Thanks all, i also have 2 2GB sandisk cards but like i said im looking for another one or 2 but didnt know if the other brands was ok or not.

I've had a count up,
I've currently got 2 x 16gb, 6 x 4gb, 2 x 2gb and 2 x 1gb all sandisk extreme 3's
Plus a Jessops 4gb that came in my new camera :eek:

and I was thinking of buying a couple more 16gb's...

I was looking at the faster exteme 4's or lexar professionals but couldn't justify twice the cost

I seem to remember some years ago that Lexar CF cards had problems with Canon (I had a 20D at the time), but I think that was sorted out and I've never heard of any issues since. I've tended to keep with Sandisk Ultra II and Extreme III and had no problems at all.

I tried a couple of mymemory.co.uk branded cards which I've since passed on to my son, they didn't seem quite as fast but they've been fine apart from that.

Not sure about that. I use an Innoplus iWith as a backup device, which runs I think a linux version as an os. It works ok with sandisk but not with many other brands - really weird.

Tesco's are doing 2Gb sandisk cards for about a £5.

P.s. I use SanDisk and Kingston.

Another Sandisk user here. Had a Lexar fail but that was due to poor storage. I've tried various cheaper brands but always end up going back to my Sandisk cards (I keep the rest as backup in case I run out of space).

Pretty mixed results!

Ive seen them on 7 day shop for £13.99 each if you buy between 2-4 sandisk 4Gb ultra 2 cf cards.
