In preparation for next weeks full moon, I have been out playing again.

This is the result.....

Deleted the image as it were kind of naf!

Still a way to go any suggestions?

I used:
a 350D with a Sigma 70 to 300mm Lens @ 300mm
Program AE
Shutter Speed 0.6 sec
Aperture 5.6
Evaluative Metering
AEB -1
ISO 200
Auto Focus

Thanks

Rob

Rob

There have been quite a few moon threads many with suggestions so a quick search should help you.

Looks a bit over exposed to me. Use manual not program starting with those settings and try reducing the exposure a bit... just keep reviewing until you like what you see. If the 350D does mirror lock up use it and a cable release or the timer to help reduce vibration blur.

Then post here again ;)

Edit: Oh and the full moon is the worst time for good detail of the moon.

Thanks for your reponse, may sound a silly question - whats mirror lock up? I have the option under the advanced features.

Thanks

Rob

it sets the mirror up a couple of secs before the shot is taken as to eliminate the mirror movement from any movement of the camera

ok I think that makes sense. Once I set that and use the remote release to take the photo do i need to do anything else? or does it looks after itself?

On the 20D you end up pressing the shutter button twice - once for the MLU and then again for the shutter. Makes for great confusion next day if you forgot to reset it ;)

so its the kind of thing you do on a mates camera for april fool:nono:

Thats right. Just press the "shoot" then you'll here the mirror go up and a few seconds later the shutter :)

Much better mate. You can see the progression in the moon's cycle since the earlier shot you posted!

Definite improvement. A lens can be sharper at some aperture settings than others. Might be worth trying a series at different apertures to see if any one is better than the others. F5.6, F8, F11, F13 sort of range. One click up on the aperture, one down on the shutter speed.

lets see what tomorrow night has in store for the moon.

Thanks, the original idea was to get photo's of the moon in different stages, and frame them. As the days go by I don't like the original photo's so that idea has gone :bang:

I've never managed a decent shot of the moon so I can appreciate the effort made here and good to see an improvement. Hope you are pleased.

Look forward to the next batch (skys and your patience allowing :))

this is last nights, not converted using the same software so the colours aren't the same as the previous - will change that tonight.

Why don't you crop a bit and re-post Rob ... would be good to see how it stands up to a bit closer scrutiny ...

I was using a 350D with a sigma APO 70-300mm Macro lens at 300mm. Was done in full manual at f8 1/250 sec, automatic white balance, auto focus, iso 200, Metering was set to evaluative.

Found it a must to use a tripod and release trigger,

Hope that helps.

Any recommendations on what to do? I am never too sure at what post work to do.

Thanks

Just a full crop around the blob itself in your software package ... maybe slightly longer on the horizontal edge ... and then normal re-sizing etc., for web before posting is all ... ;)

If you work off original again you may need to re-sharpen ... plus whatever else you would normally do before saving for web ...

Bit like ...

Hope you don't mind ... quality not good as done from your jpeg ... but you get the idea ... :D

Yep it will probably stand a fair bit of sharpening. Other than that just play with the contrast a bit

When i print through Photoshop I have kept the moon at 100% and removed the background slightly. All looks good, when I post them on here I tend to crop a little but don't do anything else as i don't want to distort the image.
