Compact advice please:

My daughter is in the first year of her architecture course at Newcastle Uni and needs a half decent compact camera for the course and for life in general. An ideal Xmas present methinks and I wondered if any of you good folk had any recommendations...?

Usage will be: Architecture, Models (architectural) and works of Art plus general partying and hijinks of course - shes a student!

Budget: £100 - £120

Other: Small and handbaggable.

All advice gratefully received thanks! :D

Have a look at the Panasonic Lumix range. Small beautifully made and a Leica lens.

Jan has the DMC FX9 now discontinued, but you might be able to still find one in your price bracket.

Warning... you'll want it. ;)

I purchased one of these for my mum for her 60th, her first venture in Digital.
It is small but perfectly formed, good mixture of functions, and easy to use.

The new range of Samsung compact digis have Schneider lenses so would be well worth checking out. I have no idea where the prices start yet but no-one makes better lenses than Schneider and they certainly know all there is to know about making lenses for the digital market.

The Fuji Finepix compacts usually get good write ups in the photo mags and the Gadget Show on C5 (Suzy Perry...Phoarrrrr) tested the latest Fuji against a Canon and a Sony and it saw them off no problems.
I think it was called the F30 or F31.

what about the panasonic DMCLS2B, argos have it at half price for £75 at the moment, great little camera with some very good features for the price.

Thanks Thailand Tel and all others for the input - I finally plumped for the Fuji Finepix A600 - which seemed to fit the bill nicely - I'm sure she'll love it :-)
