View Full Version : Not looking good for my 300d!

Noticed today that the lens was struggling to focus, put that down to naff lens, but with my better lenses the same thing, a few experiments tonight suggest that the AF system is borked, the lenses hunt, then lock on an out of focus image, if i point the camera at a well lit item then i can see a double image in the viewfinder, cant see anything with the lens off in the camera, but it deffo wont focus with any lens.

Good excuse to get a 30d?

No, it's a terrible excuse and your wife will never stand for it.

I suggest your wife claims the money instead and buys shoes.

She could take better photos with the shoes than you could with the 30d ;)

Ohh.

Not quite sure what you are describing, but have a check on this. It might account for the double images.

The autofocus system uses a half silvered mirror.

1)
Take the lens off and look inside. The mirror should be completely down @ 45 degrees to the sensor. Make sure that it is seating properly.

2) Carefully (fingertip under the front edge) lift the mirror up as you do this you should see underneigth the mirror a 2nd much smaller mirror (attatched to the center of the main mirror) lift up and fold away - flat into the main mirror.
This is the half silvered mirror that reflects light down onto the auto sensor array. If it doesnt fold away... oh oh.

3) With the mirror up you will be able to see the AF array on the bottom and the shutter at the back. Check that it is not covered in muck.

If that is all fine then try taking all of the batteries out for > 5 mins (main and coin cell) this will reset the camera - you'll lose all of your settings ***.
That might work.

Hope this helps

this is it, the second mirror is not folding back up, if i fold it down it stays down but wont flip up

At least you know what it is now :(
You "could" get it repaired, but then what a prime excuse... :)

buy the 30d and tell your wife that one of the 0's fell off

or

tell her that you've gone for a cut down version of your 300 and gotten the 30 instead, but you'll live with it for now.

Or better still ... defect Matty ... ideal opportunity to go for a decent brand that won't ever let you down ... ever ... :D

good excuse coming up.

must be spoken word for word to your wife, then she will let you have a new camera. Guaranteed to work.

"As the chief Mod /Staff at TP how good would it look if I had to use a broken camera, its not as if I want to spend £4K on a 1dsmk2 , I only want a 30D is the replacement model for the 300D, see 300D new model 30D. Its way cheaper than £4K its only £700, but for a few weeks there is £100 off it. So I would really be saving money. And I would be able to take loads of pictures of you, as well. So you see its really a good thing it broke now and not over christmas. Shall I order it now then before the £100 offer ends."

then you wait for the reply of yes or kick in the nads.

Make sure you're wearing a cricket box first though, eh?

Sorry to hear about the problem, Matty... Good luck... But do me a favour? When you get your 30D, take a pic of the 300D with a modified badge that says 'no Can'?

Matty, if you decide to buy new, let me know what you want for the old 300D, I have one myself and it might come in handy for spares, plus I love to fiddle with things I might be able to fix it.

I saw a 400d yesterday for the first time, good lord it's small! my 300d was too small for my hands before I got the battery grip but that is just ridiculous! Do the Japanese think that western hands are getting smaller with time or are they just trying to save money on the plastic?
