View Full Version : Which of these two lenses for portraits?

Which lens would be best for indoor portraits?

Tamron SP AF28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di or Canon 50mm F/1.8 ?

I have both but wondered which you would think would be best, i am thinking i can whizz in for a closeup without hitting them on the nose if I use the tamron.

I would be more tempted by the tamron. Although the canon has great write-ups sometimes its easier to move the lens rather than yourself.

For the cost of the nifty, you might as well get it, try it out and if it doesn't work for what you want, you'll defo make your money back on ebay if you flog it. ;) Kerso's got em advertised at £56 through ebay, but sure it will be cheaper if you do it outside, so to speak

sorry,, perhaps I didnt make myself clear.... Ive had a nifty fifty for about 18 months now.... i also have the tamron, just didnt know which you all thought was best to use. :thumbs:

Would the 50 not be best as it, by all accounts is sharper ... and certainly faster ... :thinking:

Obviously not an expert in your gear but ... I would opt for the 50 if it came down to choice ... although it would be good to see results of same shot from both to compare ... :shrug:

Let us know what you go for ... :D

The 75mm end of the Tamron is better for keeping the right perspective of your subjects face (the more correct shape etc) but the 50mm will be sharper. The best way for you to find out is to field test them both on the same subject I suppose, grab a willing victim (or unwilling if you have handcuffs) and shoot a variety of poses of them with both lenses.

Set the camera on a tripod and take some self portraits with the both lenses and get the pics up on a computer and see which ones you prefer :)

I've not used the tamron but I'd have thought an f1.8 prime would be better.
