When I first went digital: I was a bit flush with cash! I had a rush of blood to the head and bought a 170-500 sigma zoom. This was a monster of a lens and it never went out of the house. Each time I packed my rucksack for a walk I chickened out of carrying this lens around all day just in case, plus the tripod. Eventually I put it on Ebay and got my money back (I bought it on special offer) Now I'm wondering if I did the right thing in selling it! I have a 70-300 zoom; what are the restrictions of buying a 2x converter over the size and weight of this lens?
Assuming that the Nikon TC's are similar to the canon ones, they don't fit the 70-300mm Sigma.

Not familiar with Nikon, but longer lenses will be better than lenses plus convertors/extenders, however the price is why alot of people go for an extender - as longer lenses get very expensive very quickly as you go beyond 300mm (and even sooner for fast lenses like f2.8).

Possibly - although it's the physical shape of the lens that means it won't fit the Canon TC's. It's the wrong shape on the back edge. Are the Kenco TC's a different shape does anyone know?

Because the Kenko extenders are not weather sealed like the Canon ones, it means that there is no protrusion into the lense to make the seal, so the Kenkos will work. However you will still lose autofocus beyond f5.6, unless using a 1 series camera.
(Thats how I understand it anyhow).
