Nikon Lens for Weddings [Archive]

I've offered to be backup photographer at a friend's wedding, probably taking candid shots at both the wedding and reception. I'm looking to buy a decent lens for low light so that i don't need to use flash. Everyone seems to rave about the 'nifty fifty', especially for the price. However, I've also seen good reports for both the Nikon and Sigma 50mm f1.4, and there have also been some Nikon 85mm f1.8's advertised recently at reasonable prices. Although I like the price of the nifty I would be prepared to stump up the cash for a more expensive lens if it's going to do the job so much better. Any advice would be most welcome.
PS I'll be shooting with a D300.

85mm could be a bit long on a D300 if you'll rely on it all day.
Hard to go wrong with a nifty, 85mm is a dream lens though.

The Nikon 50mm f/1.4 is better but it is also twice the price :) The nifty fifty is a seriously wonderful lens, so much so that I have TWO of them and keep one with my spare camera and one with the main camera!

Where are you located, if you have never used a nifty then I would suggest that you meet up with another TPer and have a play with their's you really will buy one straight away and never be without it :)

I agree as above ! I bought the nifty f1.8 afew weeks ago and it is a cracking lens really good and pin sharp and I mean pin sharp. I have the D300 also and got for the same reason. Get it with out thinking :thumbs:

I'm not a fan of the nifty-50 on a crop camera, but it is cheap! The new Nikon 35mm f/1.8 is a better bet IMHO, or Sigma 30mm f/1.4.

Thanks for the advice. I,ve got a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 which is almost always on my camera, but was worried that about shooting in low light. The wedding's not until September so may opt to try out the nifty in some low light settings. Any advice on camera settings would be appreciated.
