Hi Guys,

Does anybody use the Tokina 12-24 lens ? Cant get the Nikon 12-24 lens as its out of my pocket :'( So I will have to buy something in my price range !

I need something wider for my sport photography and I am thinking buying this lens sometime after Xmas...

Dont tell the wife ! ;)

Thanks,

Paul

I have read some very good reviews of this lens. It is as good, if not better than the Sigma 10-20. In some areas the Sigma shines better, in others its the Tokina. Most people buy the Sigma due to the extra "wideness", but I think the Tokina also makes a great buy.

Me? I own neither as have not got round to buying an ultra-wide angle just yet.

There's a good "shoot-out" type review HERE (http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/nikkor-12-24mm/review.html) which compares a group of supa-ydangle zooms
I picked up a mint 12-24 Nikkor recently on 3Bay just over £400  so there are used bargains out there if you still fancy the Nikkor (?)

Toki 12-24 user here!

This, along with my 120-300, is a lens that I will keep. Period.

I've had varios sigma EX's and none of them in that price range have come close to the toki in build quality, seriously. It is a tank! Sharpness and AF are spot on for me, it is sharper and better built than my (good) Canon 10-22mm was and I paid significantly less for it too!

My conclusion is sharpness is on a par with the competition depending on copy and build quality is, fantastic!

I have the Tokina 12-24mm.
I've tried it next to the Nikon version. The only way to tell the difference in images was to look at the EXIF later.
It's well put together too.

The only reasons I'd go to a Nikon 12-24:
Weather sealing.
Silent motor.

Are those 2 features worth the extra lay-out? for amateur use. Nope.

trebs - fair enough - I'd add one more reason to consider though: Re-Sale value which (for me) tips the balance back to the Nikkor ... Paul ;)

Resale value?

Buy a 12-24 Nikon for €1400. Sell used for 1000. Loss of €400
Buy a 12-24 Tokina for €400. Sell used for 250. Loss of €150

Sorry, had this discussion with plenty before ;)

Ok, you're cheating by looking on fleabay. ;) Personally, I'd not risk buying a lens on there. Mainly because I use them for a living.

Heard nothing but good things about the Tokina (especially the build quality), but having never used one I have remained silent :D

Nice pic their EOSAddict, if anything is needed to sell that lens I guess a pic like that would be it

Cheers, wasn't meant to hijack, just show what the lens can do ;)

The Tokina is a digital only isn't it?

It's an APS-C lens yes, although it will mount on a full frame dig or film camera it will vignette

It's annoying - people keep singing the praises of this and the Tamron equivalent, but I'm now looking at buying for the long-term so it seems like the Sigma is my only realistic option.

Thanks. Had a great trip there in June - will post a series in a new thread when I get time.

Long term then the 1DMk2n would be on my wish-list for sure (although it'll more than likely be whatever they replace it with as we're talking a LONG time in the future!). Seems more logical though if I'm buying lenses to buy ones which will eventually fit on whatever I end up with as that cuts down on the total spend overall.

Hence the theory is - Sigma 12-24, Sigma 24-70 f2.8, Canon 70-200 f2.8L (Cheers Carl!) and some sort of Macro lens but I don't yet know what. (Can't even BEGIN to think along those lines yet!)

I really want this lens (canon mount) but have noticed onestop-digital are out of stock with no ETA on any more.. Is there anywhere else other than ebay I can buy this lens for around 250quid?

I would make a new thread but it wont let me because I'm new! :(
