Hi guys,

I'm a newbie to dslr cameras and need some advice on which option to go for. I'm expecting identical twins at the end of August and have a little girl aged 1 1/2 and want to take lots and lots of portraits of them as well as use the video functions. Eventually aspire to be a pro at baby portraits and nature. I simply can't decide between the two cameras and keep going back and forth. Please help!

One further option is to wait for the Canon 60D but if its on the 18 month cycle, I'll be waiting for a long time so perhaps that is not ideal.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Firstly congratulations, I have twin boys and they tend to end up in most of my pictures.
Secondly, do you really think you will have time to take any pictures ;)

If you do a side by side on Dpreview they are quite close in specification. Slightly higher MP on the Canon and the Nikon has a few extra minor bits over the Canon.

One of the main things is the weight, with kit lenses, the Nikon is 200g more than the Canon. It is a fairly large camera. Have you tried both for size in a shop ? If not it might be worth doing that.

I can't comment on the Canon, but the D90 has very good high ISO performance and Jpegs straight from the camera are very good.

D90 has better ISO performance than 500D.
Also if you want to shot babies, I don't think you want to flash them!
Therefore large aperture lens is needed.
Like 50 1.8/35mm F2 or F1.8 for nikon

Your best bet really is to go down to a store that sells both the D90 & the 500D and have a play with them, that way you can decide for yourself which one suite you better.

Thanks guys for all the helpful advice. I think my best bet is to go and toy around with both like you say, perhaps the size of the camera will also make a difference.

Will be difficult with tweenies and a toddler but hey what the heck, you only live once!

Hi, I'm a newbie as well and I was looking at both. On paper there was not much in it between them, so I visited 3 different camera shops and after speaking to the various shop assistants, they all would have the Nikon because of the price difference. That helped me decide on getting the D90. So far I'm very impressed.

If you do go the Nikon route, the cheapest places I found are Argos and Dixons. Argos uses Nector points and is part of some cash back schemes and both offer 6 months intrest free options. Also, Dixons do some times offer discount vouchers. I used a 4% off of all cameras voucher when I got mine from Dixons, which brought it down to £708 delivered.

Good luck what ever your decision is.

I also went for the D90 + 105 Kit lens

got it from Amazon for same price as Argos was asking.

Argos was 1.5% Cashback on www.quidco.co.uk but I prefer Amazon as there returns policy has always been good in the past for me.

good luck with your choice anyway
