View Full Version : Sensor or Lens dust?
Just wanting someone to verify whether what I'm seeing on my shots is sensor or lens dust. I'm pretty certain it's on the lens - given them a good clean and can't really see it now.
There's one dust mark visible on the image when shot at f/16, but not at anything below f/8 or so.
Am I right in thinking that's it's not on the sensor, as it would be visible no matter what f stop I used?
If you have cleaned the lens then it will more likely be on the sensor, and if it's on the sensor the same applies it will be more noticable at higher f stops
No, dust particles generally show up more on higher f stops.

Most of the time it is just dust on the sensor but it can also be dust inside your lens. If it's the latter you will need to get it professionally cleaned. I have dust in one of my lenses which can be seen when shot with a very small aperture but as its just one spot, I would rather photoshop it out for now until it gets so bad that I'd have to get it cleaned out.
Have you tried using a rocket blower on it? If that doesn't get rid of it you will need to try something like sensor swabs, artic butterfly or a dust aid kit.

Any recommendations for a particularly good sensor cleaner (and loupe)? I think I have one or two tiny spots too that haven't come off with the blower brush or auto-shake.
Barely noticeable except I set about checking looking for them a couple of days back.
Dust on the lens or in the lens will not show up in photos. You would need the most extraordinary amount of depth of field for that.
It's dust on the sensor, which only shows up when your have a lot of depth of focus, ie at high f/numbers.

On the other hand, if you are using an extender with marks on the lenses, it will show up.
